The difference between "socialist" and "democratic socialist" is about as well understood in popular culture as "socialist" and "national socialist".

It's incredible how no one is capable of possibly doing anything more than Hillary, yet some will fall short of what she wants to do. Truly incredible. Almost beyond belief, even. A baseless, self-serving assumption, even.

Captain_Maclaine posted:You're deeply underestimating just how poisoned the word socialist is, even twenty-plus years on since the end of the Cold War. I'm a Vermonter who's been paying at least passing attention to, and voting for, Bernie for my entire adult life and I'm willing to admit the reality that even given the disenchantment many other Americans are feeling with the capitalist status quo, an awful lot of them (and not just the conservatives) still unthinkingly react negatively to "socialism" and anything related to it. That Bernie is, at best, more in line with your average European social democrat doesn't much matter when so many people still shut down when they hear the word out loud. Doesn't matter how much he explains what he means or how much what he says is actually in line with what people want, given that. The majority of Americans believe Obama to be a socialist. Clearly he should not have been elected and re-elected? http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2010/07/poll-55-of-likely-voters-think-obama-is-a-socialist/59463/ quote:First, when asked if they thought the president was a socialist, 55 percent of likely voters said yes. Rand Paul is catchin' on (I'm tellin' ya) with students from the Maharishi University of Management, in Fairfield, Iowa. In case you don't know what that is:quote:Followers of the maharishi, who died in 2008, frequently see themselves on a journey to fix the world—not through conquest but through expanding minds. Every afternoon, at least 1,700 meditators gather in the Bagambhrini and Patanjali Golden Domes on the Maharishi University campus, not far from the Tower of Invincibility. The number is important: 1,700 is 1 percent of the U.S. population divided by its square root. According to the maharishi’s teaching, that’s the minimum needed to generate the Maharishi Effect—a decrease in crime and violence caused by the positive vibes generated by the meditators. “These are people who want to perfect their health and their world,” Leahy says. “There’s a lot of consciousness toward perfecting the environment.” They believe they can achieve this through collective transcendental meditation which enabled yogic flying and produces good vibes. Here's a video demonstration of yogic flying: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyXAB5L3EIQ John Hagelin, one of the movement's biggest promoters, ran for President on the Natural Law Party ticket in 1992, 1996, and 2000 and got more votes in Florida than the difference between Bush and Gore that last time. His platform was very similar to (what people believe is) Rand's today: end aggressive wars, legalize drugs, enact a flat tax.

His charisma combined with progressive Dems desperate for what he represents could mean he has some real sticking power. Hell, I may even get a chance to vote for him in California!

If it's part of your goddamned heritage you better be able to howl like a demented werewolf on the spot. I know you're probably joking but lots of memoirs and letters from the Union soldiers during and after the Civil War stated that, unless you were in an actual battle against the Army of Northern Virginia, you haven't heard the rebel yell. People tried to get Confederate Veterans to repeat it during the war and immediately afterwards, in like 1866, and basically everyone involved was like "yeah you just had to be there."
