Saya No Uta, as far as I'm concerned, is an exercise in planting the protagonist--and reader--in a maximally hosed up situation and observing what it does to a person. The protagonist has a brain problem that makes him see the world and its inhabitants as nauseatingly gross, meaning that his only companion becomes an actual lovecraftian horror whom his brain interprets as a young girl. The protagonist falls in love with this monster and starts having sex with her (this too is intended to be gross), eventually committing acts of murder and cannibalism (etc) because he can no longer perceive others as human, only monsters. By the end, everyone's values have changed--even the readers are meant to surprise themselves with their ability to look past all the despicable, disgusting things that are happening and still manage to find the main ending romantic/bittersweet, or perhaps even beautiful. No I'm not going to recommend Saya No Uta to anybody but it's definitely meant to be revolting so that it can prove something about human nature: our minds quickly resort to twisting reality in order to comfort ourselves in the middle of literally the worst poo poo imaginable. By the way, fanart done for this VN makes the artist look insane virtually 100% of the time:

I'm not discounting that most of the fanart in this thread was done by insane people (or partially sane people with weird fetishes). It just, uh, I guess that's your problem if a moe anime girl eating guts/gore doesn't look weird to you anymore.

On the subject of horror, I think gore is a really lazy and ineffective way to do it. Cause ultimately gore isn't really scary. Its just gross, and whether or not somebody is bothered by that comes down to their own tolerance to that kind of stuff. I used to have a really weak stomach when it came to gore, but now I've seen so much of it I realize a lot of bad horror leans heavily on it to try and shock the viewer. The stuff that really gets under my skin is the things that are just creepy and wrong on a more subtle level. Unrelated fanart;
