I also plan on playing on normal instead of core rules because I'm sure this is going to be a lot harder even though it is not a tactics version. I'm sure all of this is a bad idea but damnit BG 1 and 2 are my favorite games of all time and I need to play them more and with new content. Unlike the rest of these pansies, I think BWP is pretty fun. The storylines are mostly crap and most of the npcs are murder fodder, but the loot. Oh the loot. Ridiculously unbalanced game-breaking items the likes of which you have never seen. Would you like to know more? From what I remember from the last time I installed it, BWP has like a dozen different options for installing and reading through them will give a decent idea of what all stuff it adds; but you could spend literal days reading through the full mod descriptions and not reach the end.

I installed BWP once and then uninstalled it when the first area I went to was a straight rehash of another BG2 zone, and then the dungeon inside that zone's cave was the map for the Amn sewers.

Further BGEE first playthrough tripping. Haven't progressed the main quest since Nashkel. Have instead proceed to go absolutely everywhere else I can first because I decided to Dual Imoen to Mage because I could, mages are evidently awesome, and she's not Dynaheir. Along the way we ended up doing Neera's quest, which meant killing a lot fo pathetic goblins and then suddenly the Red Wizards from her recruitment show up and we murder them too. That was... I won't say it was hard because it wasn't but it was annoying because of Webs and grease everywhere. You guys were right, Web is awesome. Melee Team has a tendency to get caught in it but Jaheira is so awesome at throwing rocks it doesn't matter. Not even sure why since her Dex is meh but w/e. But god, Neera's a great party member but her writing is just... eugh. She's sounds like a stereotypical high-schooler sometimes and-

Yeah my all evil drow/red wizard/blackguard party has no goddamn romance in it at all which sucks so i picked up that slutty rogue. I miss the banter of a mixed party where i'd be busy robbing a house then the camera would jump outside because my party was yelling at each other haha.

Every NPC gets infinitely worse as soon as you reach romance content. I don't know what it is about romances in Baldur's Gate, but it's best to just not touch the poo poo, really. Of course that didn't stop me from romancing Neera out of morbid curiosity. Anyway, I finally started IWD:EE and, although playing on Insane gets tedious at times, it's fun. I didn't really consider how slowly two multi-classed Fighters would level early on and what that would mean when they're the party's only tanks, but that's nothing Sleep can't handle. Also, I hadn't seen the option for conning a gem out of a random Easthaven townsperson that dwarves get before, that was pretty funny.

It took about 5 days to get BWP to how I wanted it which in the end was pretty much no new content but some new spells and SCS and other rules / difficulty tweaks. I'm finally at peace.

SCS, Divine Remix, Spell Revisions, Item Randomizer and that one that completely overhauls HLAs would have likely done the trick for you.

I'm not really sure how to use a multi Mage/Thief properly. It's a combination I've wanted to try for a while but I don't know how to use them effectively and I'm not above shadowkeepering in a kit because I play with SCS on Insane. I'll be using Jan and leaving him to rot in spellhold and then shadowkeepering Imoen eventually. I'm changing Sarevok in to a Fighter/Mage/Thief and giving him Carsomyr too so want something that is better at some things than that combination. Thieves are primarily utility classes with bad Thac0 and proficiencies that aren't good at fighting. Even the kits are mostly poo poo: Assassin doesn't have enough Thac0 to go good consistent damage, Swashbucklers are good but don't get extra APR/lose backstab, Bounty Hunters would be good but the vast majority of their special traps have saves and are surpassed by HLAs and shadow dancers seem like oddballs more suited to dual/multi with a fighter. Mages benefit most from rapid level advancement which is something that the Thief portion of the class is going to hold back. A shadowkeepered swashbuckler/mage might be good. You'd end up with 10 base Thac0 + 6 to damage and hit from the Swash side of things + specialisation but then you'd also lose backstab which is one of the most fun things about the class. Weapons would probably be some combination of Scarlet Ninja-To and maybe short Sword of Mask. Assassin/Mage might also be good but the only time you'd ever be able to hit anything reliably is after a timestop, time trap or with tensers on which really limits your options. Edit: Just a thought ... Mislead, Spell Immunity Divination and Tensers in a chain contingency would be pretty baller. Entropy238 fucked around with this message at 13:17 on Jul 6, 2015 |

Actually just started reading up about the bounty hunter's Maze Trap and it sounds completely cool and OP. No Resist, No Save, will slowly re-introduce enemies in to battles based on their intelligence and can be used 5 times a day at level 21 when you get it and in combat. Sounds like a great oh poo poo button.

It might be 12 year old hearsay by now but I remember hearing that enemies int stats are kind of binary by the time you hit that level, so everything is 3 int creatures or 18+ int geniuses, coincidentally both having the same shortest maze duration. Still useful for the reasons you listed but maybe not the end all crowd control it might appear to be on the tin.

Fighter/Mage is all about buffing and then destroying your opponents in melee, Thief/Mage is more about invis and backstab early on then eventually traps and time stop and other such shenanigans. Swash/Mage would play about like a f/m so I guess go with that if you just want thief skills but want to play it like a fighter/mage but also get access to UAI and Traps. In front of a non-hostile dragon/before a lich probably not.

The real nuts part of bounty hunter's trap is not any of the effects (which are good, up until maze), but the fact that it can be launched forward as far as you can see, fireball style, and nail enemies you know are there but haven't seen yet. If you are good at placement, even the maze can be useful by letting you maze half an encounter to be dissected when they return.

Dropping this here because I didn't see anyone else had posted it: http://www.pcgamesn.com/baldurs-gat...lassic/page/0/1 New Interquel will be the Siege of Dragonspear and apparently Chris Avellone has been helping them polish up the writing. Could be good ... could be a turd? Time will tell. Somebody should kickstart an Engine Remake that keeps all of the original assets and rules and just makes things high-res/polishes it up. I'd pay €50. With better modularity I'm sure all the good mods would eventually make their way over too. Entropy238 fucked around with this message at 11:08 on Jul 10, 2015 |

Not really sure what you'd make high resolution - all of the Infinity Engine games have run at any resolution you want for practically a decade now. The sprite quality is decent (if anything, they're the weakest part of the games), the 3D effects for the spells haven't aged that badly, and the backgrounds are pretty good. Honestly, I'd rather they just ditch the Infinity Engine entirely and go to a more modern engine while retaining the existing assets. e; vv yep, exactly that. Well Obsidian have pretty much shown you can retain the isometric infinity engine style experience with a Unity based engine, so really the new "infinity engine" is already here. Provided you could either recapitulate what Obsidian did or attempt to license it as I think the Torment: Numenera team have? I have a lot of nostalgia and love for the old infinity engine games but my experience with the Pillars of Eternity engine was brilliant and I would like to see it improved upon and used for the next generation of these type of games.

If the sources for all the assets still exist, it could be possibly to re-render them all at higher resolutions. But everything that was handpainted over will almost certainly need to have the paintover-step redone by hand.

I seem to remember something about original assets being lost by the original team, but I may be recalling things wrong. As for the new expansion, all I know is I'm going to play it, I'm going to love it, even if it sucks. I've a soft spot for Baldur's Gate.

It looks like Goblins will become a playable race now, too? Either that or they're just introducing the one NPC who is a goblin. I'm wondering if this is an expansion in the same way that ToTSC is, or more like ToB in that it's fairly standalone. I can't find any information to that effect.

I'll buy this for sure even though I'm less than thrilled with Beamdog's writing to date. If that 25 hours of playtime is remotely accurate that's a decent amount of content, though I wonder how much it'll unbalance BG2's early stages.
