Note how many smaller states swell significantly. Let's go deeper:  The county level voting results  The county level results, but with counties scaled proportionately to their population.  And finally the same scaling, but with the red and blue levels determined by strength of one party or the other in each county, and of course purple in the middle. The country now looks like a mass of hosed up bruises.
