I was curious to see how the Middle East compared, so I checked I'm surprised the US consumption levels are almost the same, given how heavily the more prosperous countries in the ME use air conditioning and desalination. The heaviest carbon costs per person are in places like Qatar, although they don't account for much of the worldwide total. Also found a neat infographic and article on The Guardian; can't really reproduce it here legibly without breaking tables (click for pdf)

Pictured, a Cavandish plantation infected with Panama disease. e: The good news is that a Taiwan university has isolated Panama-resistant Cavendish plants, and are hoping to be able to isolate the genetic structure that grants them the resistance, so we *might* be OK, but only if we accept truly GMO'ed bananas SybilVimes fucked around with this message at 20:00 on Jul 12, 2015 |

That is a bit untrue. Gros Michel still exist and are cultivated in South East Asia. They were wiped out in the Americas. The issue is it takes too long to ship from Asia before the bananas overripen. That's why you only see bananas come from place that take less than a week to ship from: US - Central America, China/Japan - South East Asia, ect. Also Gros Michel have a thinner peel than cavendish and bruise easier.

There's hundreds of delicious cultivars so don't worry, I guarantee your children will be able to enjoy bananas. The worst case scenario is that horrors of horrors, the bananas will have a few seeds.
