Looks pretty but what will that reflective material do to pens?

I just use those in my Noodler's pens since I can pull them completely apart for cleaning and also have big fat italic nibs for them, works out pretty well and I haven't had any issues. I'm also super lazy and have let them dry completely out before and other than needing to scrub the feed a bit it wasn't a problem to get them cleaned out.

I think I'm just going to commit to collecting all of those whatever colors they put out since I'm a total sucker for sparkly ink.

edit: I have some almost-dried-out Stormy Grey in my Konrad right now and one bonus to letting it reach that state is that it is SUPER SPARKLY right now because of how concentrated and settled it is. The ink looks more gold than gray and there's so much sheen it's crazy. It usually doesn't look like this and I wish it didn't take letting it half-evaporate to get that way :(

Seattle Karate Vs. L.A. Karate
So using a Pilot Metro with baystate blue (exclusively) and it dries so quickly which is good since I use it at work to sign documents all day. It's a really good work pen and a solid blue ink for document signatures.

I've had legal lapis for years and I want to start using it again so maybe I'll use it on the many wedding thank you notes I plan on writing in the future.

It works well in my Jinjaos.. one was super dry and I adjusted the nib.. the other from the box was pretty wet.
I'll have to give it a try in my pilot and see how that writes.. and how the brown works with the other pens.

Can anyone recommend a penmanship workbook, or something like that? I've been practicing like mad, and learning to write with my arm and shoulder instead of my fingers, but I'm no where near the penmanship porn that's been posted in the thread, and I'd like to get there. I'm doing sort of a snail-mail pen pal thing with my wife while I'm on deployment, and my ultimate goal is to one day be able to show my grandkids these mushy love letters that grandma and grandpa sent each other way back when, and have them be all impressed by how classy as gently caress I was.

I posted a link to a Spencerian calligraphy workbook not terribly long ago; it's the original classroom workbook set and teachers theorybook from 1874 and it's exactly what you're looking for. Link again here for ease. Each of the 5 copy books is for a level of letter complexity, and you can order additional copy books for any given level as well. Also worth noting, paper from the "golden age" of handwriting was usually ruled at least 7mm - they wrote much larger then than we tend to now. Get paper ruled at that size or larger. I like this stuff for letter writing.

The last piece of advice I'd offer is to slow down. You might type a word every second but until you write like a grandma you're going to write a letter every second.

I actually got started with fountain pens when I was about 9 or 10 and kept using one because it made my awful handwriting better. I had a hard time with fine motor control when I was a kid, and having to make the shapes of the letters while exerting pressure onto the paper with a pencil or ballpoint made it harder. The way the fountain pen glides easily along the page greatly improved my writing.

When I was a kid, my handwriting was called things like "atrocious" but over the years, all the old people with their perfect, old-fashioned handwriting have died off, so now my writing is the better side of normal. Suck it, old people who gave me poo poo about my handwriting; you're all dead now!

Im new to fountain pens but I feel loke the pilot fine loses some of the character I got into fps for. Its a bit rough due to how small the point is, and the line doesnt really vary with strokes.

Depends where you hold your pens. If you tend to hold them a little further up you'll be fine. I like to hold pens fairly close to the tip and there's a lip there that's very uncomfortable because of the way the cap attaches.

Otherwise, decently smooth nib, good build quality and a relatively reliable writer. You may have problems finding a converter that fits.

I'm just getting into this stuff now, got a few Varsity pens to determine if I like it enough to justify getting something a little more expensive. But I did look up that Muji, and someone mentioned on Amazon that a Monteverde converter seems to work just fine, though it writes rather wet. I may consider the Muji anyway, I like the look quite a bit, very utilitarian, and I already do like fountains a great deal more than all the junk sitting at my desk now, so even if I don't go all in and crazy on fancy-schmancy inks, at least I have something that's nicer to write with than the collection of garbage ball-points I have.

Wrt stationary, I have a notebook question and I don't know if any better place to ask.

I started doing work on plain white paper last semester instead of lined paper. The only downside was that I had to carry loose white paper with me everywhere.

Is there a standard size spiral notebook (i.e. paper is sized like a typical 8"x11" ish ) without lines? The closest I've found has been a sketch book, but the paper is usually an inch or so too tall/wide to fit in my folders, and it makes the paper stand out, physically. Ideally the paper would be perforated as well, so I could tear out sheets to turn in work.

Finding this is turning out to be much harder than I expected. Anything I find is either a sketchbook with oddly sized paper, or a pocket book that's inappropriate for doing engineering on. I'm tempted to go to my uni's print shop and ask them to just give me a bunch of copier paper with a plastic binding, if the sheets are perforated, but that seems excessive.

Do you mean blank A4 spiral notebooks? If you check out jetpens they have various JPN brand notebooks like Maruman and Apica that come in lined, graph, and blank series. Unfortunately, most school notebooks will have lines unless it's for art.

Also, have you considered binders? You then stockpile HP paper that way for cost/value.

Yeah, no, you're probably right, urgh. I'm sure I'm going to go for a Metro soon, since it appears to be the Seiko 5 of fountain pens, in that it's a low-price but great bang-for-your-buck sort of thing (I follow the wristwatch thread in YLLS, if you don't get the analogy). But I also want the Lamy Safari, that Muji, and maybe a TWSBI, just for the variety and to see what works best in my hand. Don't wanna spend the money, but I will probably end up justifying it by saying "hey way to go on your dissertation defense, now go waste some cash you jerk." It doesn't help that I haven't had a hobby or odd collection in probably twelve to fifteen years.

Hee-lo-ho!
About a month ago, I got a package of mini-fountain pens similar to the Pilot Petit, in size, if not on quality. They are nice, and in the last month, they have worked very well when turned into eyedropper fillers.

Around 2 USD for a pack of 4? That is honestly a pretty decent deal.

The pack contains one green, one red, one blue and one black pen, each with a single cartridge of a matching color.

Turned two of them into eyedropper fillers with a bit of silicone grease (I do not have clear silicone grease, but white has worked well for me, if not aesthetically pleasing at all)

I have not seen feeds like that in other pens. Seems to be plastic.

This week, at Office Depot, I got a binder filled with something called Stone paper. Made with marble and high density polyethilene.
The packaging said it is waterproof, which does not really bode well for fountain pen use, but so far I've had weird results with it.

It seems to work well enough, even though the nibs scrape the surface. It takes a while to dry up compared to regular paper, as well.

The surface scraping is a bit annoying.

It has VERY WEIRD blotching and feathering. It feathers like mad in some points, and not at all in others, even though the pen dropped way more ink in it.

It only bled through in a spot where I punctured the page. It is very weird and the texture is a bit offputting.

But now I have 100 pages of the stuff, and will have to use them.

I used Noodler's Empire Red in my Konrad and now the ink window is all yellow. I've rinsed it and used a little dish soap and it still looks gross.

Is there anything I can use to clean it back to clear? Failing that, is there a nice red that will stain the ink window red instead? (The pen is red and I want to use red ink in it.)

I hated Empire Red anyway and this is annoying.

A little bit of bleach on a q-tip should let you scrub it through really well. I'd rinse it with a vinegar/water solution really thoroughly afterwards as well.

the saline just slowly gets absorbed into your blood but in the meantime you got a big round smooth distended nutsack

this op was pretty neat and now I think I might get a pilot metro because nothing warms my heart quite like angering software engineers with old-timey technology. being able to do so for less than $20 is even better

It varies from pen to pen but I leave my Metros unused for weeks sometimes and they start up perfectly fine.

That being said, ink does evaporate, and the colour will get darker as time goes by.

I notice that with some inks if I leave the pen unused for more than two or three days the nib dries out a bit, and I have to wet it again (by twisting the converter a bit so the ink flows down to the nib, then twisting it back).

It's especially noticeable with Waterman inks. Not really a problem, just something you should be aware of.

If a Konrad is plastic (and not something weird like ebonite - I can't remember which ones are, and I don't know what to use with ebonite anyway), rubbing alcohol or kitchen/bathroom bleach spray will also work.

Also, the TWSBI Eco is on sale for $28.99 in black or white with 5 nib choices XF through 1.1 Stub. Comes with all the normal stuff including wrench and silicone grease.
