How's 21:9 support in games these days? It's pretty much the only thing the monitor would ever be used for. Will I constantly be checking WSGF for .ini hacks like 10 years ago when 16:10 was the new kid on the block? Mostly looking at modern stuff like XCOM, Witcher 3, GTA V, Wolfenstein, etc.

You do get some glitches sometimes though for example, batmans cutscenes are stretched but the game is normal. Battlefield 4's ending screen where it says scores is letterboxeed on the sides which cuts off the text, but only during that part. I have not had any gameplay issues at all.

Looks like the new ultrawide screen monitors from Asus isn't going to be all that great from a price point view. Pretty much paying a $500 premium to get Gsync, and 15hz for 75hz. I do not think the technology is quite there yet until the DP 1.3's start being more main stream. Now I'm not sure what to do. Do I want to just keep using my outdated 24" 1920x1200 monitor and just wait it out? Or maybe pick up something else cheaper like Dell or LG's ultra wide 60hz monitors, or even go smaller with a QNIX or Acer XB270HU. Argh, so indecisive.

I assume this is the place to write about this. I've got a VGA monitor (ASUS VH228) that's got some issues with my GTX 970. I get horizontal flickering lines when viewing either very dark or very light things. After doing a bit of research, it seems that the issue is VGA either hitting its bandwidth limit, a bad cable, or the VGA-DVI converter I'm currently using. If I can't fix the issue, I'm gonna buy a new monitor with a DVI or HDMI port, running 1080p, and mostly being used for video games. I don't particularly care about sizes, so I'd take any solid affordable video game monitor. What's a good pick? I can see that the OP list hasn't been updated since '12.

Is Gsync worth the moneys? I wanna do 144hz ips 1440p, but I have one 970, and the choice between adding another one or grabbing up either a fury x or a 980ti. I like the look of the MG279Q, but obviously I lose out on freesync if I don't go AMD at that point, and I'm leaning towards doubling up on 970's. All of this is actually irrelevant because I mostly play LoL and TF2 and don't need this, but I'm stupid and want it anyway so I can play 4 hours of the next AAA release before forgetting it. That, and fallout 4.

I'm OK with upgrading to 1440p, but that depends on the price difference between a good 1080p and a 1440p monitor. Space is not an issue.

PSA for potential xb270hu buyers: the DisplayPort cable it comes with is shorter than the HDMI and DVI cables I've had in the past. I have my case on the right of my desk on the floor, and like to have the main display on the left (dual monitor setup). It was too short by about 3 inches and no amount of reconfig (except if I rearranged by whole desk setup and moved the case) would get it to reach.

I'm currently using a GTX 770 with two 1080p monitors side-by-side. Considering picking up the XB270HU to replace the smaller 1080p. I play games on a single monitor and just keep various windows open on the others. Would the GTX 770 have any issues pushing this setup? If so, I'm assuming a single GTX 970 or similar would be fine?

What's the best bet for a large monitor (27" or so) IPS with a VESA mount for 1920x1080? I have been enjoying my 1440 monitor but it's a pain in the rear end when it comes to recording games. Nerd bullshit I know but am I going to be dealing with blurry text or some poo poo on a large monitor with only 1080 resolution?

Recommendations for a monitor to go with a 13 inch 2015 MacBook Pro? I'll primarily be using it for photo editing and writing documents, along with watching movies. I'd like a decent size, I do side-by-side article edits a fair bit, however with recent discussion on text size being too small on 4K I'm not sure what size or resolution to go for. I imagine a 4K 27" would not be a good idea? Open to price at this point but ideally not much above £500.

If you want consistency between the built-in display and the monitor, running a 24" 4K in HiDPI mode (1080p effective) would probably give you the best result. It'll still be a lower PPI than the built-in display, but not massively. The Dell P2415Q is a nice option in that regard, and can be found for around $400 in US very frequently, but I don't know what pricing is like in UK and whether they have sales as frequently as they do in US.

I'm an exclusive FPS gamer who has been living in the display stone age with a 24" 1920x1080 60hz screen. I'm ready to upgrade, but unsure what technology is worth getting (aside from 144hz). I currently have a GTX680 which handles most games I play just fine (Planetside 2, Dirty Bomb and CS:GO). Clearly I don't know just how "sensitive" I would be to tearing since I'm using such an old monitor, but it seems natural to get a g-sync supported monitor (especially since even with a beastly computer and potato settings Planetside will drop below 90 FPS in large fights). Many people seem to feel that 24" is an ideal size for FPS games, much larger and it can get difficult following everything on the edges of the screen. I currently use 1920x1080 and don't know if I want/need higher res/size. I was hoping to find a 1440p screen but that's where I ran into some compromises. The VG248QE looks pretty solid for what I need, and at a good price. But it is 1080p and doesn't support G-sync (and perhaps that is a good thing for what I need?). The PG278Q appears to have everything I want, but is quite expensive. Part of me is tempted to go this route but i'm a little apprehensive about anything marketed "for gamers" (see all of razer's product line), as well as the bump in demand that will be placed on my 680. But on paper it seems to have it all. There are some IPS monitors that look great too, but all have a 4ms response time and none use G-sync (the MG279Q uses free-sync). I honestly don't know if I would be able to appreciate the difference between the 1ms TN or 4ms IPS, but since I'm only playing shooters, I am thinking that for as much money as I am considering spending, I should probably go for the 1ms. Anyone have a strong recommendation against the VG248Q, or think I am putting too much value on G-sync? It looks like the only 1ms 144hz 1440p screen out there right now. Should I wait for more competition or better offerings, or just go ahead and buy the shiniest looking thing out there?

I have a loooooot of hours in CS GO and I prefer the extra size/pixels of my 27" 1440 monitor over the slightly better refresh rate/response time of other monitors I've played it on. I have it mounted on an arm and pull it so close to my face that it floats directly over my keyboard so I can see people's tiny heads poking around corners from across the map.

I looked up the specs when a similar claim was made a few months ago: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?action=showpost&postid=445449225 It's a little bit more complicated than that but I found out that many cheaper displayport cables leave out a pin which actually violates DP standards and as a result video cards that do send the signal to help maintain active state with the monitor can behave poorly. Cutscenes are left at 16:9 and the UI remains where it would be if you were playing at 2560x1440. Honestly, I end up just playing it at 2560x1440 more often than not.

I am considering a 1440p monitor that does NOT have 1:1 pixel mapping as a hardware scaling option. Am I correct in assuming this is a non-issue if my video card (980GTX) is able to scale the image via the nVidia control panel? The reason I ask is that some older games do not feature 1440p as a valid resolution and therefore will run at most at 1080p, and I would rather not have the image stretched but rather displayed at its native resolution, even if with black bars around it.

Okay since Amazon is doing their Prime Day thing on the 15th I figure I'd get some recommendations and see if any of them go on sale.
Based on what I've read in the OP that probably puts me in the market for an IPS display, but I'm not picky about what panel it is. The computer I build with it probably won't be pushing more than 60 FPS but having a 120 hz display would be nice for when I upgrade the GPU in the future (or 144 hz? Why is 144 hz specifically a thing, anyways?). G-sync sounds cool but also like it adds a premium to the cost?

When manufacturers wanted to step up their high refresh screens, they went for the next multiple of 24. Thus, 144Hz is born.
