Offline streaming?

Explain.

If you buy the PlexPass it will allow you to convert media to a format your mobile device can handle natively (and shrink the size) then store it locally in a location you designate.

I use Plex all the time this way for travel. It is incredibly convenient for airplanes or anywhere where streaming isn't ideal (or if you just don't have a very fast upload link from your home Plex server).

You can manually sync items or you can tell Plex what series, etc. you want, how many of each, whether to keep them once watched, etc. and it'll manage it automatically for you.

Emby offers the mostly the same thing. Plex has been doing it a couple years now and as a result their mobile transcoding works really well now. Emby still has a lot of teething problems in my experience, though some people don't have many problems with it.

I've just started using Emby and love it, I tried Kodi, but for whatever reason I never liked the "core" interface even after using skins. Emby does have some bugs right now though.

Not a big deal, but is there an easy way of marking things I watch through Plex as "watched" in Kodi? I think "no", but it can't hurt to ask.

Bind a button on your remote to the Context menu and click that then select Mark as Watched. Or map a button to the W key, I can never remember which one it is though so check the official list. It will do the same thing without the menu.

If you mean for it to happen automatically, not without some scripting on your end. Plex would need to call an external script to invoke that command (probably through HTTP RPC) on your HTPC running Kodi which would need to be on the time.

The other alternative is running Plexbmc so Kodi is just pulling from your Plex library directly. I have no experience with this so maybe someone else can answer, I use Emby with Kodi to do something similar.

Yeah, gently caress that. I have a server hosting Plex and the Kodi library (so it syncs between PCs). I was just thinking about when I watch a show on my phone, getting it marked in Kodi, but I'll just do it manually as it's only an occasional thing.

Speaking of, I noticed my remote no longer cycles subtitles or languages since updating from XBMC. I need to figure out if it's Kodi or Flirc or my Harmony remote setup...

Plexbmc or Emby with the Kodi addon were pretty much made for your usage scenario where stuff gets watched on multiple devices with different clients. I'd look into those, I run the latter and I'm quite happy with the setup.

Just run the flirc config again and you should be fine.

Probably. But the last thing I did was completely redo my Harmony setup, so there's a chance I hosed something up there. :/

You probably just changed the button map by using a different device name or something in the Harmony setup. Running the flirc config again will sort it out. I don't use a flirc anymore since all of my devices are supported natively but its like 5 minutes of trial and error to get everything setup usually. I wish we could backup the Harmony configs, I really need to try messing around with mine one of these days. I want to remove the device limit so badly, its so loving stupid.

I forgot how awful the Harmony software is. It's so drat hard to find any of the specific settings. Good thing for me is I didn't add more devices that the Harmony controls, I just needed to add some functions to switch to different HDMI inputs on the receiver. Though that would have been so much easier with a cut and paste function. "Do the exact same thing, but with HDMI 2!"

Emby has much better Kodi integration than Plex does, for what it is worth, countered by (as I and others have mentioned) the fact that it's not as stable as Plex yet.

Emby will basically work as the native Kodi library backend while Kodi continues to be the front end you know and love. PlexBMC is a much more complicated addon that has some limitations and narrows your choices of skins (and types of clients). It's also unofficial whereas Emby has "official" Kodi support, for what it's worth.

I like the direction Emby is going a lot, in general. They have seriously stepped up the game over Plex in many areas. However there is no question Plex has the benefit of time, bug testing, and stability on its side right now. I can't rely on my Emby server 24x7 - it's a science project - but Plex is solid. I'm a "lifetime" supporter of both so more power to them.

Agreed. The Kodi addon for Emby is pretty nice, although I did have to tinker with a few settings a bit between client and server to get things the way I like them. I don't know what it was like in the past but I'm running an Emby server for several different devices and its been totally stable since I started a few weeks back. No crashes or other problems. I did have some issues with config stuff but its all sorted out now. I do notice the transcoding is a bit higher on CPU than Plex though.

I'm deactivating Plex soon and probably won't be going back, just have to get over to my parents place to install Emby for them on the Roku.

You aren't imagining things; CPU throttling for encoding is one of the open items Emby is working on.

Offline support for mobile (transcoding then transferring files to your mobile device for offline playback) needs more work - this took Plex a long time to get right too. I do like where Emby is going with this - they produce "regular" files using your normal naming convention (Plex renames everything using their special metadata schema) and they support external subtitles for clients that support them (Windows tablets, newer versions of Android). However the overall process needs more work.

The server itself depends a lot on what platform you run it on, too. Emby is a .Net application that runs under Mono; the Windows server is solid, as is the docker container for the most part, but some other platforms have issues (FreeBSD/FreeNas is one) related to high CPU usage/Mono, etc.

I'm not knocking the effort, I paid to support them and I report bugs when I find them. Just not quite ready to switch over yet.

Ahh that makes sense, I'm running Emby on a Windows server. Yeah I'm not sure what ffmpeg profile they're using but it really eats CPU, this server could do 4-5 streams before and now its more like 2-3. I'm pretty happy with it overall, the server/user management tools are very robust and a big step up from Plex. The Emby addon for Kodi just works and I love that it gives the freedom to use any skin I like while retained my watched tags and poo poo across devices. I think I'm going to do the lifetime supporter thing before it turns into a $150+ thing like Plex.

knew I shouldn't have switched to the Windows 10 preview. For some reason Nvidia gave Microsoft the latest Nvidia drivers, but they aren't up on their website. The windows version doesn't have CUDA, so now I do not have CUDA as now MadVR crashes when using CUDA.

Also, has anyone seen some visual improvements with chroma upscaling with MadVR?

edit: i mean CUVID. And I just installed the "hot fix" driver and I sill cannot play back with CUVID, so I've just turned HW acceleration off all together.

True, but chances are with HDCP 2.2 the HDMI 2.0 will be a full bandwidth.

What codecs support HDR? Hell, are movies available outside of the locked TV ecosystem that are HDR?

Displayport carries audio, it's compatible with HDMI, just with a port conversion. That said, if you do DVI and analog audio, you can get an injector that'll dump it into the HDMI stream.

Yea, I assumed when he mentioned DVI it meant they had DVI (and the site didn't show ports on the linked page), but Displayport shouldn't be an issue with an adapter or an DP to HDMI cable.
