CaptBushido posted:Sounds like "taken out context.html" to me. The point seems to be that when you're dealing with immigrant children, and some public schools have a lot of those, then many common analogies and attempts to create a connection that educators are taught in school are a bit too American-centric and might not be as effective as they'd like. Therefore, maybe a teacher in that situation should tone down the PBJ and apple pie and baseball analogies when they're dealing with a classroom of first generation Somali immigrants. It's just common-sense analysis of inter-cultural communication and the "HAY GUYZ! This lady said PBJ was RACIST!" angle on it is moronic. Alright, this whole Bibi gets missiles thing. Is it the Onion being prophetic or Haaretz being fooled by the Onion? Or just "Bibi is a literal super villain"? Unrelated but seasonal:

It's so easy to drive along the major highways and see nothing but McDonalds from sea to shining sea.

My father grew up in Ashtabula and I have been to Geneva-on-the-Lake many times. The last time was about 10 years ago and it was indeed a horrible and depressing shithole I hope to never see again. I can't imagine it has gotten any better since then.

Ohio looks like a marginally more miserable hellhole than the rest of the US (florida and louisiana excepted).

Accretionist posted:Really reminds me of that Ted talk about creating walkable communities as an alternate to "places not worth caring about (see above)" In retrospect, that talk is hilarious because everybody in the room is probably involved in the tech sector in someway, and was supposed to be one of the "new urbanists" who were going to bring about the glorious revolution. However once they started to interact with poor people and people of color, they decided maybe the suburbs had it right the whole time. So they built their headquarters out in the middle of nowhere where they could have a private walkable compound, and when they do build in cities they need to make sure they have sky bridges so their people won't actually have to interact with the people who live in the city. New urbanism will not happen in America until we have nothing but affluent white-only cities.
