Caught up with this basho today (my third). Goddamn incredible. Harumafuji sprang away from the ring's edge like a cat early in his faceoff with Hakuhuo. I've said it before, I don't give a poo poo about sports but this is completely worth my time. It was great seeing Kaisei come up, I've been rooting for him since finding out he was Brazilian. I don't have any ties to the country, I just thought it was cool that a non-Japanese was a sumo wrestler. Then I found out how many other folks are from other countries. I think the guys I tend to root most for are Kaisei, Oosunarashi, and Tochinoshin. The first because I just think he brings a good game, even if he's not the best, the second because he seems cool and is the brownest dude in the ring (disappointed he got injured), and Tochinoshin because his eyes are dreamy. https://twitter.com/galaxia_galaxia/status/602111033088442368 doctorfrog fucked around with this message at 09:29 on May 31, 2015 |

Has the sumo app been unwatchable for anyone else? I've been trying for a week to watch the featured videos, and I'm fairly certain the download rate must be in the range of bytes per second.

Just watched a few matches, the initial load takes about 30 seconds but it plays fine after that.

It's fixed at 42, so the odd number of Yokozunae is the reason. Before Terunofuji's promotion, we had 3 Yokozunae and 3 Ozeki, so everything else was able to be in pairs (K, S, and M). I think they could do an odd number of S or K if they wanted to, but otherwise that means there has to be an odd number of Maegashira to maintain the 42.

That was a hell of an explosive edge-to-edge battle between Myogiryu and Harumafuji. On a tangent, my friend that moved to Japan brought me a few packs of BBM sumo trading cards when we met in Hawaii for his wedding. So, I'm pretty much doomed because I now want to collect them, but holy poo poo I cannot find them anywhere. I even searched for them on amazon.jp and found new boxes for sale, but they apparently can't sell them overseas. Rakuten has been showing sold out of the current year for weeks. Is there any market at all, outside of Japan, that sells them? e: also looking for a list database, but my Japanese isn't good enough to find anything with Google. There seems to have been 2 releases this year, one in January and one in May. Here is the list for the May one http://www.sportsclick.jp/sportscard/card/2015_sumo_iki/card_list.pdf It seems like the special signed cards only have 60 examples in circulation, good luck. Here's the Jan one, less detailed http://www.sportsclick.jp/sportscard/card/2015_sumo/index.html Uncle Jam fucked around with this message at 20:12 on Jul 12, 2015 |

Kyokutenho obviously, but he seems to be hanging on better than the rest. I think Goeido and Kotoshogiku are both getting demoted, too. We need some more Endo-types to bring back excitement or this is going to turn into the Hakuho v Terunofuji show in a hurry.

It's really weird looking at the Juryo banzuke and seeing a lot of names that I had gotten used to seeing in Makuuchi. Chiyoootori, Sokokurai, Jokoryu, Asahisho, Shohozan.. hell a good third of the names. Brutal system, the banzuke.

Are you paying attention, Kyokai?? Since Kakuryu can take two basho off without losing his rank, he is back and as healthy as ever. Meanwhile, you've got Masunoyama crumbling into obscurity because he hasn't been able to take any time off to fix a lung, Tochinoshin who had to troll his way through the kids and grandpas in Makushita and lower Juryo just because he had to bounce back from a horrible injury, and Endo encouraged to wrestle while missing a goddamn ligament in his knee. Something's got to give.

Oosunaarashi had a really cool win and that's nice to see. Terunofuji looked really strong in his match. Hakuhou is a strong sumo man. Good day all around I'd say.

The Canadian guy Brodi is having a tough time in the basement of the league https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--4q0__O2aM Apparently he is fighting with a stent in his hand to drain fluids that are pooling there, and has infection(s) on the bottom of his foot.

You'd figure that if Masunoyama had done the operation like a year or two ago, he'd be back in makuuchi or juryo by now. Re: The Canadian guy, I get that he's having injury problems but it's still pretty disappointing. Edit: And no, the Kyokai is not paying attention. Like most governing bodies in Japan, nothing will change until something terrible happens that makes them look really bad.

You mean like their golden child, Endo, becoming a one-legged bust? Giku and Goeido might actually take their kadoban status right to the wire. I predict at least one victory against the Yokozunae between the two of them.

No, I meant more like a guy with a lung condition dying in practice because he didn't get the treatment he needs or a young rikishi getting killed by his oyakata due to being beaten with a metal baseball bat. A dude they had hoped for to win flaming out doesn't really mean anything as injuries happen all the time and it's not life threatening. Someone dying from a policy is another story. I mean not that I know if Masunoyama's condition is that dangerous, but I'm just talking about a hypothetical, giving an example of when I think they would change policy. All of the times where the Kyokai "did investigations" and changed policy was because of some stupid thing that they almost surely knew about but did nothing and paid the price. Like I don't see any way the Kyokai didn't know about the match fixing before hand as it's full of ex-rikishi. I don't see any way that the Kyokai didn't know that sometimes oyakata use extreme, excessive forms of punishment for the same reason. Both of those things should have been addressed but they just let it go on until it made them look really bad.

Was looking through Juryo results, who is this Mitakeumi guy? I assume he's college champ of some sort because he got to start in Makushita in March, and looks like he's absolutely stomping his way up the ladder. 6-1 at Ms10 in March, 6-1 and promotion to Juryo at Ms3 in May, and currently going 8-1 at J12w. Makuuchi debut by November tournament if this keeps up?

Goddamn, day 9 was one of the best individual days in a long time, especially for one that didn't have any pending drama. Giku's bumpety-bumpety-PSYCHE move, Tochiozan demolishing Kakuryu, Hakuho's bitchslap, Kise vs Teru's epic seesaw, Goeido and Tochinoshin showing some serious power, Oosuna outmuscling Gagamaru with one arm, and even Kotoyuuki demolishing Satoyama right off the line.
