The tac bow is a bit rubbish, but that Ninja beats most in Cc and is cheap enough and hard enough to hit that they can usually get into Combat with something worth a lot more for your opponent.

Well my since the release of AoS, my small Warham group have basically shelved our 8th ed stuff and been looking around for something else to play.
After looking at the Infinity website and models a bit on Sat, we all now either have models in hand or on order :)

The scale is so refreshing, actually 28mm! No Skulls!

We'll be playing our first games this Friday, badly and so very wrongly, and I'm pumped!

Are there any other New Zealaind Infinity Goons in this thread?
Where do you get your models from?

I've fired the Tacbow all of three times in about 20 games. The Ninja itself is a fire-and-forget missile that can almost always trade up for a better piece - If it hits close combat, which it is incredibly easy to do, it will usually butcher whatever it touches. It also does not suffer from cheap, impetuous discover/intuitive problems like the Guilang. At the last Tournament I went to, that gorgeous 26pt model secured over 350pts of kills in 4 300pt games.

For posteriety, here are my last three tournament lists. I've yet to drop a game, and in all bar one, the Ninja has been an absolute star. The only reason they weren't a star in that one game was because everything else killed too hard.

TBH one of the things I really like about Infinity is that characters are usually only a slight edge over the troop they're based on. So Joan is one of the more extreme characters going, with inspiring leadership and NWI as a HI, but even so there are more expensive HI out there. And things like her, saladin and sun tzu, while all good, aren't necessarily better than just spending the points on more models. I just think it hits the right balance between your own un-named models being centre stage, which encourages people to use their imaginations, and some cool special characters who add colour.

Characters can be traps. Especially ALEPH characters. The points you pay usually don't equal the gain. Atalanta, Diomedes, Teucer, Pentheselia and Patroclus are good examples there. The points you pay do not equate to just taking more generics (Or not taking them at all, in the case of Penny). I think it would be easier to count the named characters that are a worthwhile investment, as opposed to the ones that aren't.

Joan, Achilles, Ajax and Pheonix immediately come to mind as good characters. I think the CA Morat chap isn't too bad either but I have limited play experience vs him. It's a bit skewy as ALEPH has the monopoly on the characters as well as having almost all of the good ones.

E: I also really rate Ko Dali and Uxia, I see the latter quite a bit but very rarely the former. I need to travel around the UK like I used to.

Characters are weird. I find in my first starting games that we weren't ready for them (We went from operation icestorm to 200 pts). Achilles wrecked my face and I didn't know how to handle that character.

For early starter games I'd shy away from gotcha moments with characters, but it sounds like you guys are way past early starter games.

We're a massively mixed meta, two have been playing 3-4years+ (I'm one of these), the others are anywhere between 8 weeks to 24 months or something. It's a really weird one.

For our newer players I tend to rock up with any list with some stuff that's probably a bit too good but use it as a way to sort of slow-grow coach and teach through playing rather than it being a straight up game so it works out.

As people noted there are some positive outliers as well - Ko Dali is famously good, I see Kornak used a lot. I would add Joan, William Wallace, Sun Tzu to that list. I fully admit to not being completely familiar with every sectorial but you have to admit Steel Phalanx pretty commonly includes Achilles and/or Phoenix. All the characters you mention do bring some little thing to the table right? Spotbots and super-mobile EXP CCWs etc.

I play Corregidor and we get Senor Massacre (prob not as good as 3 jaguars, but has zero-v smoke and anti-TAG capability), Valerya Gromoz (cheaper marker and WIP14 hacker), Carlota Kowalsky (boost to some stats and an adhl over the standard tomcat engineer) and McMurrough (an awesome death machine who brings a unique capability). I also own Sforza who kicks rear end too.

So while I admit there is some variation between the characters who add a unique skill and those that are overpriced due to skill bloat, I stand by my comment that they add a certain something without being necessary.

EDIT: I use Dark Sphere, but I couldn't say what their shipping outside the UK is like.

I think Thrasymedes, Alke, and Machaon show up more than Achilles. Alke because she's a fairly simple no nonsense Spitfire Thorakitai with slightly buffed stats, Thras because he's a pretty good and cheap way to make a Thorakitai link, and Machaon because he's a very good specialist who can fight his way to an objective as well.

Achilles is still hugely good but he is expensive-even if his expense is because his abilities all synergize very well. High stats means he generally wins face to face rolls, ODD stacks things in his favor more, good ARM, BTS, and 3 Wounds let him survive the occasional failures and crits someone will have, his speed lets him take advantage of his high CC, and his high CC not only gives him an antimateriel option, it also keeps him from being vulnerable to the weaknesses TAGs and other expensive gunfighters have-being tied up in close combat, because he can win those CC fights pretty well.

-even his Frenzy is actually arguably a blessing in disguise, as if he Frenzies that means he's successfully engaged the enemy and they haven't managed to kill him in their reactive turn, which means he's getting a free order to gently caress people up with.

The bad characters tend to be the ones with skills that don't synergize with their role. Atalanta and her BS17 in the active turn, when you're probably using her as a reactive roadblock, Teucer and how he pays for decent close combat skill and NWI, Patroclus and his giant mess of wargear...

Now that Unidron Batroids exist and give you (relatively) cheap infantry to fill out your orders list, I'd say "not really" because that was the original problem-you'd need to use unarmed utility REMs to fill out your orders because EI stuff is really expensive.

All the new EI stuff is pretty dope, and running just EI aspects + Umbra + unidrons + Sygmaa + Dr. Worm MD PhD + REMs is pretty doable. I generally advise people against limiting themselves to a subset of a vanilla faction that doesn't yet have a sectorial (I have a friend who only has Russian Ariadna and it drives me goddamn nuts), but in the particular case of Combined, there's honestly a lot of very similar, overlapping units that do similar tasks in different ways. The things I think you really miss out on by ignoring morats/shasvastii are the Malignos infiltrating TO specialists, Daturazi for easy smoke cover and cheap ninjas to run at your opponent and distract them, and weirder options like Aswangs and Rodoks. If you're willing to put up with that, go for it, since I suspect things will just get more awesome as more books are released.

MJ12
Apr 8, 2009

The Fractaa also seem pretty nice on the EI side, because they're 2 W airborne deployment troops-makes it possible for them to eat an ARO on their drop and still retain combat effectiveness. That's pretty uncommon (I think only Tohaa and ALEPH have AD troops who can eat a wound and still function, and ALEPH gets that via a single character) and seems like it lets you do some really aggressive poo poo with them.
