Someone just linked me to this thread and I'm posting to say that I love Red Pandas far too much. If London Zoo ever get any I would have to go there a lot. I went to see the ones in Central Park Zoo when I was in NY last year but they were hiding in the tree so I could only just see them . Anyway here is a picture of a red panda, hooray! <-----

I just watched that video, ha. Also Hokuto is hanging out with Kin now, which Coco probably appreciates (he's a handful!).

this thread has taught me that red pandas: -can't digest most of their primary food source -are clumsy little furballs -just want to wrestle with each other and im curious.... how exactly did they survive in the wild???

|
There's practically zero competition for their food source, and they stay up in the trees where most predators can't reach. They're only endangered because of human activities.

Only certain zoos let you feed them, right?

I hope that's safe for the panda. I know cat cub petting isn't okay, but I haven't read up on panda petting.

I know cat cub petting isn't okay, but I haven't read up on panda petting. Someone who did it and reported back to this thread was told that they don't like being touched. But I've seen them being pet in plenty of pics from close encounters. So I'm not sure. Part of why they do the encounters is so the animals are acclimated to different humans for stuff like vet visits, though, so touching is probably ok???

Perhaps "no/minimize touching" is simpler than trying to explain "don't manhandle them" to every single group that comes through. I assume they don't appreciate it if you stick your fingers in their mouths to rub their gums, unlike, say, wolverines.

Just judging from that one pic they'll probably climb you for a nice piece of fruit but maybe they don't like pets the way a dog does. Frankly I'd rather have one of those brushy tailed guys just hang out on my shoulder for a slice of pear than try to pet em if they aren't into that.

Seeing as they'll do social grooming, they might like petting to an extent, but it also might be an individual personality thing. There's that one panda at Adventure World that hangs out w/ its keeper on a leash, that one doesn't seem to mind being handled at all. Anyway, here's a panda in a basket.
