divabot posted:Got any details on that? What are you thinking of? The US Copyright Office exists, but you're right that Berne Convention is all you need for e.g. a DMCA. lmao have you ever tried to locate the rightsolder of a random copyright? it's fuckin impossible because of this very issue. I don't know if the copyright mafias have actually lobbied against a centralized database of "contact this person regarding licensure of this particular copyright" but it wouldn't loving surprise me in the least.

Shot in the dark, but here are a few reasons that probably exist for the anti-registration 1) They have to register everything. Pretty damned hard to since they want to claim copyright to everything the creators create, including everything that normally gets left on the cutting room floor. A single song could exist as several dozen different entities since each version from the original scratchpad to the final album version would probably technically be its own entry, then on top of that there are all the various jam sessions that could be bootlegged or inspire someone else to reproduce the same sections 2) They have to register each different part of each instance. Using the song example, there would be a bunch of different copyrights to hold; each individual instrument track as its own performance, the edited production as a whole, the words of any lyrics, the different versions of the lyrics for different languages, and all kinds of other bits 3) They have to register who actually owns the copyright. Music companies probably want to keep artists as in the dark about their contracts as possible. Tons of stories out there about artists being surprised they don't actually own their own work when they try to do something the production company says no to. I really don't think they want artists to be able to look up their own song in the database and not see a trace of their own name 4) gently caress I've effortposted too much, but the obvious thread of thought is that it's to screw the little people, let owners keep sending unenforcable C&D letters to others, and save untold hours for their legal team, not to mention the potential filing fees
