I wonder if in 10-20 years FNaF and Slenderman will be as cultish and/or nostalgic as early 80s horror film franchises are for some adults now. Any remotely iconic monsters seem to come from games these days. The last film-related one I can think of is Ghostface; you do have some iconic zombies from The Walking Dead but they don't carry the same weight to me.

they won't because the "story" or lore or whatever of poo poo like slenderman is just a vomited mess done by morons on tvtropes. I have to laugh that FNAF would even be in this conversation. once we're at like loving FNAF 7 THE REALLY FINAL CHAPTER it'll only be remembered as a withered cash cow

Are there really people on the internet getting REALLY ANGRY when discussing the "lore" behind 80s slasher franchises, though?

Well sure, but there is now though. There's present-day internet forums discussing Star Wars and other pre-Internet stuff in exhaustive, excruciating detail, I wasn't sure if there was anything like that for 80s slasher "lore" (although I shouldn't be surprised if there is).

Maybe not FNAF but Slenderman penetrated pop culture a long time ago, particularly when those two children stabbed another girl and cited Slenderman made them do it. If it stays the course then I guarantee in 20 years Slenderman will become an urban legend with the true origin becoming a footnote in history like eating spiders when you sleep or the Japanese woman who died looking for treasure in Fargo.

I can bring up Slenderman at work with 50+ year old people and they know what I'm referencing.

There's publicly-accessible usenet archives dating back to the late '80s, and hoo boy there really isn't any difference between nerds now and then arguing about lore and minutiae. The tone of usenet discussions around the time of Star Trek: The Next Generation's premiere differ absolutely nil from anything you'd read on a forum these days.

Ehh there's clearly a story occurring that's being intentionally cryptic but there's no way it's as complex and convoluted as dumb internet nerds make it.

It's just a ghost story with slasher/evil carnival elements.

The FNAF games are all solid, if getting difficult to the point of tediousness. I feel like it's at the point where you're more likely to get frustrated than scared when you die.

RE: RPG Maker/Wolf RPG/etc. horror:

The Witch's House is the best I've ever played. Also good are Mad Father, Ib, Mermaid Swamp, The Crooked Man, and Ao Oni. Paranoiac might also be good, I got distracted by finals before I could beat it.

Not an RPG maker esque games, but Irisu Syndrome doesn't get enough love. Love Mochi is good as well, but that game's really difficult to track down a working english version of. It's on IOS, which doesn't help me since I use android. :sigh:

Corpse Party was a decent RPG-maker style game that got a real release, but it was let down by the fact that there was a lot of obtuse and aggravating bullshit involved with getting a good ending. Including punishing you for reading some things by basically locking into a bad ending halfway through a level.

Story was creepy though.

E. If you are looking for LPs of a lot of those kinds of games I have to recommend Mangaminx, she can be a bit obnoxious but she generally doesn't overplay it -too- much and, unlike most of youtube, does a lot of indie games, and most of all doesn't have a gooddamn facecam. She's basically the first person whose LP's I watched outside of the Archive so grain of salt for my biases.

There was an LP of it by Corridor a long while ago. Don't think it was archived.

The story is good in a really hosed up way, but the gameplay was a bit lacking.

Since my memory's refreshed, I think the gimmick behind BOS was some weird mix of like 999/Zero Escape, Siren and Final Destination.

It was continuing from the ending from the first game where a time loop or setting happens, and they keep trying to escape the drat place with some vague memory of what's going to happen, but they all were destined to die, so they die in even more gruesome methods.

I guess anything that is so odd that it can make you uncomfortable is a kind of horror. It just has to strike a tone from regular Earthbound like goofiness, even though that particular series can get dark very quickly just because it starts so sickeningly sweet.

Theresia is one of my favourite DS games, but it is more adventure game/interactive novel than most horror games are. There's no combat, just traps and puzzles as you piece together what happened in the aftermath of a war.

Actually, while I'm thinking of it, can someone suggest more puzzle-based horror games? I love those parts of early Resident Evil/Silent Hill games but I'm not great at the combat parts of most games. (I gave up on RE4 halfway through because even 'easy' was too hard.)
