These are both really loving stupid and backwards. MODO is a piece of poo poo and even if it were perfect for gameplay it's still a massively different social experience (in that paper magic is a social thing and MODO isn't social at all). You have to make concessions to play online, not the other way around.

If you don't like drafting by the actual rules then go find a LGS that doesn't draft by the rules, not the other way around. And certainly don't have a tantrum because someone actually wants to play by the rules. Personally I don't really give a gently caress if it stays in pod or not but I can see why someone might and I would never begrudge someone for it, in the same way I would never begrudge someone for asking me to play out my combo or writing down my hand after a Thoughtseize or any number of other things that are well within the rules that people get their knickers in a twist over.

Was responding to the lovely strawman of "you can't get more than 3 rounds without going crosspod," because some people love staying in a LGS for 5 hours on a Friday Night for a draft tournament. Because lord knows I said "I want 7 rounds of FNM but I don't want it to be crosspod."

Considering I was one of the few people not verbally griping about the way the store runs drafts (new to the town, trying each of the game stores) I have a feeling that the people there only were there because the gentleman's agreement the local stores have about rotating FNM formats.

quote:

For every time you are steamrolled from the god deck at the table that opened all the bomb rares, you are at that table another week. It all averages out.

Maybe, and hear me out here, I don't want to be on either side of that equation? In pod means they built from the same pool as I did, so it should have rough parity between decks at the 2-0 bracket.

It is FNM, we're not playing for prizes worth a drat. I'd rather play 3 solid games then 2 solid and 2 crushes. If I'm playing cards for cash I'm at the casino or doing a private game night with a healthy buyin.

Thanks. Honestly, I understand going cross pod. Some people want 4+ rounds of FNM, which is all well and good. I wish that stores would openly state their formats and prize payouts, which isn't exactly too much to ask (I think).

Instead each store has their nuances and it gets tiresome being two rounds in and being told that they're doing 4 rounds, or the prize payout changing mid tournament, or any of the other things that card shops do.

I want FLGSs to succeed. Different niches for different folks. Some people want 4+ rounds, some people want a tight three, some people want swiss, some people want single elimination. Why is it so much to ask for stores to be up front about which experience they're offering?

Maybe there's some confusion regarding my tone here, but I'm not trying to "throw a tantrum." The example given was him going 2-2, so there really isn't a way to do parings by record and also stay in pod. If he wants three round events, cool. I prefer a little longer, but that's me.

And the bit about MODO was almost exclusively to highlight the absurdity of the "play standard or sealed" argument.

Yawgmoth posted:

Interestingly enough, there are no rules about needing exactly 8 people for a draft, so everything we've discussed is totally fine per the MTR. Stores that break pods aren't also breaking the rules.

E: Apparently the TO must announce prior to the event if pods will be broken for regular REL events. Comp/Pro REL events must stay in pod.

Crosspod drafting is broken because it depends too much on which table opens bombs. Instead, you should play sealed, which does not have that issue at all.

The one store I rarely go to does drafts of however many people are there, and only doubles up when they get to 16.

Have you ever done a 12-person draft pod? It's the stupidest thing. You get about 4 good cards per pack. I was lucky enough to rare draft 2 fetches and a foil Rhino because my (and everyone else's) deck was some 4/5-color pile with no synergy and very few good cards.

I've not done a 12 person pod, but that's because my LGS will break that into two 6 man pods. 11 is the worst number, honestly, there is basically no way to make that work well. You can basically assume you get one good card from a pack and that your last 5-6 picks will always be garbage unless the people near you are really bad and pass you something insane. Like my fourth pick Tasigur one time. Apparently no one was playing magic to my right.

Also, I did find something buried in the MTR that draft players may only play people in their pods in comp/pro REL events, but at regular pods can be split as long as the TO announces this before the tournament.

They stay in the graveyard. They are considered different game objects from the creatures Rally put into play; the game does not "remember" that it wanted to exile them when they were on the battlefield.

The other guys are right but what technically happens when multiple ETBs happen at once is you choose the order they go on the stack and then they resolve in last in first out order. Just saying what order they happen in is an acceptable shortcut most of the time but if your opponent has a response at some point in the chain of ETBs resolving it will matter and you'll definitely need to know that if you play on modo

The store I go to occasionally (would be more but it's pretty far :() has $12 Canadian entry for a draft, prizes are 5 packs for 3-0, 1 pack for 2-1. It's a bit top heavy for FNM, but I usually play with a group of friends and we are okay with being a bit cutthroat :v:.

my store's weekly events are $5 entries, 110% in store credit payout, they run 3 rounds for 8 mans and 4 rounds for larger and pay out to X-0, X-0-1, and X-1. I'm not entirely sure what the math behind the payouts is but if you're X-1 you're typically making like 1.5x the entry fee.

Standard pays out in packs and drafts pay out in packs though, I have only drafted MM where it was 4/2/1 MM payouts (I think it might have been 3 packs plus a $5 for the entry fee actually for the MM ones since their fee was $35 or 3 MM packs + $5.)
