I heard about billpayforcoins.com, a service that allows you to pay your bills using bitcoin, from various online sources (they conveniently list them here[1] ), and from their interview on Let's Talk Bitcoin[2] . I assumed they were a trustworthy business, or at least a functioning one. Based on their online reputation and interviews I have even unfortunately recommended them myself as a possible way to pay bills using bitcoin. On July 6th I decided to try them for myself, and placed two bill payment orders for two credit cards, scheduled to be paid a week later on July 13th

July 13th came around, and there was no payment registered on the cards' websites. I e-mailed their support that same day, and received an answer a few minutes later from Mark V. stating:

"I will need to check with Grant, who handles the payment side of things. He has been out of town for a couple of weeks due to some serious family issue. He indicated that he would be back by now, but he is still in New Jersey. I just texted him to ask on the status, so we will see what he says.

He has a listing of when items were sent by our system, etc. so he knows what went out when - I have no visibility on that myself."

The payments have never gone through, and I have had to schedule payments from my bank manually to avoid late fees. Despite them having a satisfaction guarantee[4] on their website covering up to a $50 late charge, missing a credit card payment would hurt my credit score and cause my credit card rates to go up, which would be way more damaging than just the $50.

Since then, for the last two weeks, I have been sending follow-up emails asking for a status update on July 14th, 15th, and 22ns, as well as contacting them through their web Contact form, reporting issues with both loans, sending them a message through Twitter, and calling them at least twice, both times no one picked up and the call went to voicemail (Google Voice number). My last contact, sent to both Mark and the Admin, warned them to please get in touch with me, otherwise I would go public with this.

I feel that I have done as much as I could to get in touch with them, and have given them plenty of time to get back to me or resolve the issue. At this point, with a complete lack of contact, I feel as if the business is pretty much defunct and no longer functional, with just the website running unattended, accepting bitcoin, and no one doing anything with it once it's received. So, I'm letting other users be aware, PLEASE do not use this service until their issues are resolved. At best they are completely unattentive and busy elsewhere, and at worst it's another scam. In my experience, when it looks like it could be either malicious intent, or gross incompetence, it's usually gross incompetence. I suspect it's the same here. But the end result is the same: their service does not work, and my $1059 is now stuck in limbo.

First let us start by apologizing for the massive delay. There is no excuse but there is a reason and you deserve to know what happened. The next thing we need to tell you is that we have been working hard (Successfully) to either refund our customers or process payments through other means (More on that later) to Part of the issue recently is that the main person that processes payments was out for nearly a month dealing with some serious family issues.. Technical issues followed which did not allow us access to some key components of the website.. But these have been the least of our problems... and if it wasn't such a difficult and troubling issue this last part would be an interesting conversation piece... When we established the business we made it a point to speak directly to the Bank, explain the business in detail, delivery all of our paperwork and make ourselves available from Day one for any questions that they had. We did this so that we would not have issues with the Bank especially given the fact that we are a bitcoin business.

So.. what was the problem?: Despite a through and detailed explanation of our business with people at the highest level at each of these banks and despite the fact that they opened our accounts and approved our business.. within months Bank after Bank closed our accounts without warning, held the funds until they got around to cutting checks back to us (which is odd because once they closed the accounts we no longer had a bank to deposit into), and stopped or ignored payments that we made on behalf of our customers. The first time that this happened we wrote a mass email to customers advising them that we had this issue and that we had found a replacement bank. We did the same thing the second time, and we notified customers the third time. The person that oversees payment processing being out certainly did not help this most recent time. We have opened a new bank account but given the experience that we have had so many times we have continued to process refunds back to customers and process payments using alternative means.
