It looks like the blue tights are like some sort of overlay? Material reacts differently to light when stretched around a volume than skin, and it sort of deadens the effect of the color.

You know, if you don't like working on the same drawing for hours to days, I honestly don't think comics are "for" you.

Also, don't trace 3D models. The facial expressions will always look off and dead.

I know what I'm about.
yikes, is this ever not working for you.

it's not that you're taking a completely wrong approach here. 3D models are very handy and I've seen them put to use by lots of artists, for anything from backgrounds to reference material to keep characters "on model"... all with varying degrees of success.

But this paintover thing is bad. it's just bad. It looks like what it is: a poser model with a braid and lingerie scribbled on it. nobody is going to be fooled, and nobody is going to be impressed. There may be a practical reason for it, but does that really matter when the only thing you get at the end is a picture everyone hates?

I can understand being frustrated with the time it takes to make a piece of art, whether that is a pinup or a comic page, but here's the thing... art tends to turn out better when you spend time on it. shocking, I know.

Your approach is too focused on convenience and it is not working. I'd advise you to take a step back and think about what you really want to do with this whole art thing. If you want to pump out "consistent" generic pinups of half-naked disney characters white women, go ahead. But if you want to make something people will connect with, enjoy and be inspired by, you're going to have to try a little harder than that.

Echo, why did you pick this style as the aesthetic choice for your comics? PERSONAL OPINIONS about realistic 3d renders aside, part of the strength of ~drawn media~ comes from the ability to distill complex emotions or ideas into seemingly-simpler, iconic images. Like, what does a line make you feel like? why does it feel different from this other line? What are you conveying by your choice to seemingly forgo lines and other "marks" by making it realistic? Hell, even in live action stuff, actors are playing broader than they would be as regular people, and all the other elements of production are working to make the idea more "readable." What you've got right now looks like screenshots of a movie where nobody really understood lighting or staging.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: Why did Art Spigelman draw Maus with iconic characters instead of realistic ones?

Also I hate this image, this image is trite buzzword bullshit. loving of course you want to make your characters "compelling," everyone knows that you dumb cubicle, maybe next time write down how to do that. Except then you couldn't post it on the internet and get a lot of shares, without having done anything at all.

Using 3D models for rotoscoping can be useful but you never want to use Poser models to try and create anything. You limit yourself tremendously by trying to perfectly recreate something, it's meant as a guideline too loosely gently caress around with, not a crutch. Make something simple to act as a guide for proportions and stuff, that's honestly all you need.

Why the gently caress elsa of all things though

If you don't particularly enjoy constantly making the same art over and over again, you might want to consider a different storytelling medium than comics. Like, the best-looking painted-over CGI comic out there, Anomaly, still looks janky and generic compared to something that's all-paint, digital or not.

Actually thinking about it I did some rotoscoping poo poo that was pretty pretty much a trace too but the difference is I made the thing myself and planned to use it for animating and frame-checking poo poo. So i guess there's a bit of a Caveat there, assuming you have the skill and patience to go that far.

What authority is that image from that makes it worth a drat? There's nothing wrong with a character being likable, sympathetic, or relatable. Hell, it says characters SHOULD be believable, which I'm pretty sure entails a character being relatable in some way. It's a bad picture that reads like something a smarmy person who just took an entry level Creative Writing course would put together.

E: would elsa jerk it with an icicle or with olaf's nose ^^^

Here's how you write characters: stimulus->response. The rest is just SALAD DRESSING.

That's like half a joke and half something I actually believe but BASICALLY however you write characters, it shouldn't be as broad as "make them good," or even "make them relatable." Give em a desire and make em act on it! Make your story about something, and have your character react to it! Base your character on yourself, and then base the other character on your best friend and brother in gaming!! There's a million ways to do this poo poo and that image just AIN'T CUTTIN IT

Here's some practical advice: never trace. Don't do paintovers, don't use photos or renders or anything as a base for you to put art on top of. Don't do those things and don't trust anyone who tells you it's an okay corner to cut. The reason for this is because you want to train your eye to read the underlying structures of a reference, digest that and reinterpret it onto your canvas. Skipping the read-and-process step robs you of any chance of developing an eye for how things are actually structured. A great exercise is to look at an object, figure out it's basic forms and how it's built and then draw it from an angle other than the one you're seeing it from. Don't start your drawing with a Paste command.

Okay, wow. I am really glad that art is making you happy, though like many others I question the wisdom of the crotchless Disney picture as a centrepiece. But Reiley is very much correct, you're going to lose out on a lot of fundamentals if you only trace and don't ever sketch from life to learn the basics of how things are put together. The time you think you're saving from working like this isn't worth skipping all of the lessons that can teach you.

Please draw from life. Please don't post Disney porn.

 Okay, let's get this thread back on-topic. Now we're talking about likeable vs. interesting characters, I just thought I'd run a few character designs for my comic relaunch past the thread. My designs in the past have been pretty flat and sameish, they didn't express the characters' background, culture or personality very well. I've been dabbling in a style that mixes photomanipulation with digital painting, so it's got that nice foundation of realism but with a veneer of artistry over the top. It's good because I've always had a tendency to get caught up in re-drawing and worrying about little details. This way I can get a comic out as soon as I've collected the photos. Anyway, here are the characters (all the photos are my own):

Lumina Brennan: The "leader" of the group. Headstrong, a little bossy, secretly insecure and worried about her appearance, but she hides that under a veneer of self-confidence as you can see from her straightforward no-nonsense flaunting of her body. Each of the characters has an elemental power and Lumina's is Light, so I tried to incorporate a rainbow element into her design to evoke the light spectrum without relying on cliches like blonde hair or literal glowing.

Plum Blossom Yang: The genius of the group. Her elemental power is Brain. She is a ninja who is very shy and submissive, but uses her meek appearance to get close enough to her victims to strike them with her neuro-hacking, with which she can take control of their bodies. However, she prefers to control her own body - she's an athlete as well as an intellectual and considers her perfect figure to be a symbol of her power and ability, so she displays it proudly whenever possible.

Mengelina Finn: The sassy girl. Her elemental power is Water. I made her a redhead as a bit of irony. She actually gets really upset when people point out how funny it is that a redhead is in control of water! Although Lumina tends to take control, Mengelina is the true leader who influences the others through snark and sarcastic remarks. Sometimes she can go a bit too far and cause offence, but she has a good heart and tends to be right about most things. She grew up on a secluded island living a subsistence hunter-gatherer lifestyle, so she never learnt to be ashamed of her body and she usually goes naked because it helps her swim faster.

Choo Choo: The alien. Choo Choo's elemental power is Fire. She's actually originally a tool of the invading aliens (the villains of the comic) and is a modified deathbot who was hacked by Plum Blossom and developed sentience and a personality. She's quiet but extremely powerful. She doesn't really understand humans yet, but the other girls are trying to teach her to fit in with human society and constantly reassure her that she's beautiful and desirable to boost her self-confidence, which leads to her slowly becoming more empowered and willing to display her body over the course of the comic.

Let me know what you think! I'm hoping to get the first few comics out as soon as I'm totally happy with the art style.

I think the purple on her face makes her look like a zombie. That'd be pretty cool, like her power is the only thing keeping the darkness of death away.

quote:

This is a girl? I really couldn't tell at first, maybe you could punch up her design a bit? It'll be easy to overlook the fine detail of eyelashes in an actual page.

I'd like to see how they all interact in a comic, though. Are you sure the size difference between the other girls and the alien won't make blocking a scene too difficult? It's great to have a lot of thought out world building, but if you don't actually make a page, it's hard to see any potential missteps.
