I might not have the int to craft a flamethrower but today I teleported in front of two chain gun turrets and didn't die. A bunch of psi clones had also teleported in front of them and they took off alf my health anyway, but still.

Also I cleared the first level of Golgotha by sitting in a corner while my teleporting clones killed everything, because I'm scum.

e: I'm afraid if I get to the boss my clones are going to decide to teleport on top of it and ineffectively wave their knives around instead of using their powerful mind flames, and then I'm going to die.

I found a mechanimist priest on the exterior level of asphalt mines who set himself on fire and died. I made a suicide run for his flamethrower, got it, and survived. Best trip ever.

That character reached level 20 and then died because I pissed off a great saltback.

That actually makes sense, just... Wow. Really comes down to wanting expert disassembler or not for an int investment, I guess.

Wait, you don't need tinkering to build things from data disks? This is wrong....right?

I have definitely found data disks and been unable to build or learn from them due to lacking the relevant skill.

You do for disks, I think their point is that if you have enough psychometry, anything you learn via it can be built (as it isn't a data disk).

In other words, tinker skill may only be checked on learning recipes from disks, not building what you know, and psychometry grants you knowledge directly.

If that's correct, anyway.

So how do you go about melting rock in the early game? I haven't had luck doing it with fire hands, pyrokinesis or thermo grenades. Do I need a ton more thermo grenades or am I doing something wrong?

You need 5 thermal mk I grenades and a water skin full of salt water.

You have to stand 2 tiles away from a shale wall and throw all five nades in rapid succession. You WILL catch fire on #3 or #4, just keep throwing, then back away and put yourself out with 5-15 drams of salt water, wait for the nade effects to pass (the temp around you will drop/you won't burst into flames as you approach the lava), then approach the lava (do not step in it) and use ctrl-G to get-from-nearby and fill one or two water skins.

If you stand too far back, the rock cools too fast. I'm not sure if clumps of shale matter or not for heat absorption, so I usually use a small 2-tile clump of shale, which I'll take a picture of later.

Huh. Just checked it via wishing, and that is in fact correct: granted myself a high level, maxed out psychometry, wished for an eigenrifle and psychometered it, bought the Tinkering tree and Disassembler/Expert Disassembler (to get the bits) without putting any points in the actual Tinkering 1/2/3 skills, and was able to build an eigenrifle.

Kind of makes me want to play a minimum-int esper-tinker.

edit: also I got the lava earlier. You can wade in it just fine if you've got a carapace. :v:

Psychometry straight up doesn't work if you don't have the relevant tinkering skill. If you think the int requirements are bad, good loving luck finding the bits for anything that needs tinkering II or III. Tinkering is about making grenades and salve injectors (all of which you can get off tinkering I and a single point in psychometry), not so much equipment.

e: oh, you just need gadget inspector to get recipes off it, and then you'll need disassemble to get bits.

That makes Psychotinkers really really good for hybrids of any kind who need tinkerable consumables, though less good for getting ahead of the gear curve. Very interesting even though it further reinforces "you need 25 int and expert disassembler if you REALLY want to tinker."

Is 21 or 23 int for expert disassembler too OP?

Expert disassemble is the most inept design in Qud (which is saying something) and is getting changed when we finally get around to starting content updates.

You're not going to find the bits to "get ahead of the gear curve". By the time you can have a flamer disk you could have already had an actual flamer (for about half the price of just the disk). Every now and then you'll see a vibro blade recipe that uses a ton of low level bits instead of a high level one but otherwise it's asking for something that might as well not exist in the wild.

I don't know, for vibro blades, laser rifles, and flamers it's not super unusual for me to be offered the recipe before the weapon itself shows up. The bits are more of an issue, though. 1-3 are all pretty easy to get, 4 isn't too bonkers, 5 onwards are huge jerks.

dis astranagant

You just have to keep an eye out for expensive but not too expensive artifacts on sale. If you see a weird artifact on sale for about 4x the cost of a musket, it's probably a flamer, carbine or similar weapon. If you see one with oil, you don't even have to guess. They're not terribly uncommon in Grit Gate or Kyakukya.

It's both a wonderful surge of nostalgia and genuine appreciation. I loved then, and still love now the way properly colored text looks. Thematically appropriate colors for magic/tech items rule :3:

Done well it's also a great quick visual reference. Bronze, iron, carbide. Material properties. Heat and cold, elements. Health, obviously. White glowspheres, dark colored skulk injectors. Whacky color explosion artifacts.

Yep, I'm a fan :neckbeard:

Oh man, my true man praetorian found a pair of helping hands on a random named snapjaw in the rust pits. I'm a long blade and shield specialist - what should I be holding in my new two hands? Do i need to get the ambidexterity skill to use third and fourth hands? Does it work if a shield is in my second? Can I triple-wield shields and benefit? Should I just wield 3 long swords? I've already got a mining cap so I don't need a torch hand.

The best use is probably 2x two-handed weapons, with the dualwielding tree boosting your chances. I'm reasonably sure that multiple shields don't stack and that the proc rate for attacks with the robo hands is very low.

You've lost that lovin' feeling,
Now it's gone...gone...

Using multiple shields doesn't give you any benefit, and ambidexterity only affects chances of hitting with your main arms, not any extra.

The biggest benefit is being able to use a two handed weapon + a shield at the same time, although honestly I cant think of many (any really) strong late game two handed melee weapons.

edit: beaten, but also does anyone know if there are late game two handed weapons? I cant think of any but its also been a long time since I've gotten far with a melee character.

My mainhand is wielding a carbide long sword, so unless I can find a carbide twohander then it seems like my two extra hands aren't gunna give me much benefit, then. Could I move the shield to a robo-hand and get full benefit from ambidex by dual wielding in my real hands?

I've seen crysteel ones and ursteel/metametal ones exist but I've never seen them ingame without wishing or baetyls making demands for them. Even two-handed metametal mauls and the 38 str it takes to get the most out of them have trouble with cragmensch. Killing Ualraig for the vibro blade is more consistent against high AC targets.

One of the dromad trader types tends to carry lots of fullerite and crysteel but I know of no way to tell them from the other 4 varieties, besides the fact that they usually carry a dozen or more artifacts. I wished for 14 of them before one carried a crysteel two-hander, though his buddy that came in the same wish also had one.
