Man, the 'escorting naval units are necessary rules' really makes me re-evaluate the value of CAs and how they are needed in order to ferry stuff around. As well as that, it does limit what you can react with and you have to do some pre-planning before making an attack. Man, I'm liking the strategic/logistical aspect of EotS more and more as time progresses.

Nah, haven't really looked much into it. It seems more 'floaty' than the one for the COIN series though.

I've played it- it requires a decent amount of input to really work. I mean it'll guide your play through a hand but especially with the Allies you have to fudge things a bit to get good play.

The Japanese bot is significantly better than the Allied bot.

That's a pity. It's not a dealbreaker for me, but I much prefer not having to make choices for the bots.

EotS is way too complicated to make a bot that can handle everything about an operation, particularly a mid-late war Allied offensive with Japanese naval/air assets that can respond.

Seriously, what a tease.

I got a copy of Normandy '44 in the mail yesterday, after hemming and hawing over which Normandy game to get. I was really going to hold out for The Battle For Normandy but then decided to get my head out of the clouds and realize that an 12'x13' game probably won't get on my table as often as a 2'x3' one. But I'm happy with it, N'44 has a beautiful map and a really simple system. I like Mark Simonitch's design, since I had Ardennes '44 already.

Here's a fun comparison.

Battle For Normandy, with Normandy '44 in the upper right corner :stare:

edit-- Also, EOTSv2 is coming in the mail tomorrow, thanks jerks for making me want it! :argh:

Ordered my copy today but I have no clue when it will arrive in Germany. Hope the shop gets it with their next shipment.

Quick summary of the game:
The left side of the board is a representation of the political tug of war between Churchill, Stalin and FDR/Truman during WW2. Each game round starts with a conference between the three of them, where the players bring issues to the table and try to get as many of those issues to their side as possible. On your turn, you can play a staff or leader card on an issue to bring it closer to you, with each card having a base number as well as unique modifiers for certain issues. If you do so, the other players get a chance to "debate" you by playing a card of their own to counter yours. But, you have at most 8 cards in a given conference (7 staff cards plus your leader card) and there are at least 7 issues on a table each conference, so you have to be careful about how you play your cards.

After each round's conference, you move on to the right side of the board which represents the different fronts of the military operations against Germany and Japan. At this point, each player gets to spend production on buffing fronts with military/naval stuff reinforcements, changing political alignments of regions, etc, and then all the fronts automatically attempt to advance forward, which is essentially military strength + die roll. The game ends when both Germany and Japan have surrendered, or the final conference is over, whichever comes first. Player that has the most VP wins if they're within 15 points of the player with the least points. If the spread is more than 15 points, you roll a d6, add 15, and if that number is less than the spread, the player with the second most point wins (ie the two weaker powers made an alliance against the stronger power)

It'll make sense, eventually.
I've been in two minds about this game ever since the rules were spoiled. It's got a cool angle on WWII, but a number of gameplay ideas behind it seem fairly unconvincing. On the other hand, it's Mark Herman and he's super excited about this, and he knows his poo poo when it comes to wargaming, right?

If you share your impressions, apart from the general "is it good", I'd kindly ask you to day how some of the things work in practice:

- Is the actual cardplay interesting, beyond the basic twist of "it's War... But with a third player!"? What little cards I've seen were of the fairly unexciting "+1 if played on issue X" and "you can play this dude, but then he might die" variety.
- The final scoring seems like a convoluted, kludgy, die-rolly attempt at dealing with runaway leader problem. But who knows, maybe Herman's reasoning behind does indeed make sense?

And you forgot to mention (iirc) that if Germany and Japan do *not* surrender, everyone loses cause they were all too focused on politics to win the war.

It should be pointed out that it's explicitly an optional rule to drop the die rolls from final scoring if it's too random for you.

Actually, what happens when the Axis aren't surrendered, the 1st place and 2nd place players lose VPs, and the 3rd place player gains VPs.

That all being said, you get a lot of VPs through things that bring the Axis closer to surrender, so there's almost always an incentive to proceed.

Played a game of EotS against tomdidiot today, played again as the Japanese. Managed to win turn 8 thanks to Political Will being 0. The allies lost 2 political will from not having CVs on the board and two from lack of Progress of War and I played Tokyo Rose for the last one, netting me the win. I was on a good tempo as the Japanese: completed Malaya/Philippines/DEI on turn 3, started the invasion of New Guinea, the only front that wasn't going well was Burma.

tomdidiot made some crucial mistakes though: he attacked Rabaul with only 3 CVs and the KB jumped him. which lead to the carrierless turns. We def need to give it another go now.

Depends on the game. If all pieces get set up on the board and there's only a few extra markers/counters, then there's no need for the extra space.

Then again, I have 15 Plano boxes full of ASL pieces, so I'm certainly not opposed to trays.

There isn't really an easy way, to be honest (although I can understand their unwillingness considering the TK rulebook is a bit of a mess). How experienced are they? If they are new into wargaming and don't really know about EZOCs etc it might be difficult.

Played another game of EotS as the Japanese (i'm gonna take a break I swear)! Managed to win on turn 7/8 through Political Will victory after a successful invasion of Burma and putting India under revolt!

Game was really intense. I pretty much squandered the KB because I didn't really use them offensively in the starting stages of the game. If I hadn't won through India Rebellion I would have almost certainly lost. High risk, high reward. The reason why I went for CBI was because my starting hand had two chinese offensive event cards, so it seemed to me that I was destined to do it.

Nope, all of my games have been with RL opponents so far (one of them a goon).

EDIT: Also I had a look at a Mark Herman opening strat for the Japanese and he drives hard for the DEI and takes Guadacanal while landing in New Guinea, but does 0 in the CBI. I'm really starting to think you have to decide which side to take. I think taking Guadacanal and preventing reinfs into New Guinea is important since it protects Rabaul, but you just don't have the cards turn two to threaten both that and Rangoon.
