A hilariously accurate summary of OnePlus's marketing approach:

quote:

That is a point I'd like to highlight, actually: OnePlus can only succeed at these lower price points where they aren't actually forced to directly compete with the likes of Apple, Samsung, or HTC's newest high-end phones. They can stay in the mid-range price tier with high-end-esque specifications like a big fish in a small pond, but they know full-well they'd be eaten alive in Lake Flagship. So, instead, they yell absurd and foolish things from the safety of their insulated price point, attempting to convince passersby that they're the real deal. And clearly, it works to some extent: consumers love nothing more than to be told that they're not only smart for saving money compared to "everybody else," but that they're actually better than other people for making that decision. It's like you're in a special club.

Of course considering Motorola's coming in at $399, OnePlus' strategy of hiding behind price point kinda starts to fall apart there.

Is the LG G4 worth considering? It ticks most of the boxes I'm after (dual sim, wireless charging, not huge, decent camera, 32Gb space). I guess the Z3 and S6 are in the mix but I don't want Samsung and the Z3 is kind of old. Anything new on the horizon that will fit my needs?

G4 has a great camera and good battery, but is definitely not 'not huge' and I'd definitely go for the new Moto X if you can wait for it (though it'll be even slightly bigger). Between the three you listed, I'd probably go for the G4 if you're OK with the size.

The new Moto does sound pretty good but the confirmation on if it has dual-sim and which model has that still seems to be up in the air. When are the Moto phones expected to be available? What about the new Nexus?

I have a work number and a personal number and my work policies mean I can't easily use one or the other. The way dual-sim is implemented sounds like it would work fine for what I need (one account for data, can text/call from either sim).

Alright, here goes.
It would appear that most of my cellphone's starting memory is already occupied by the starting apps and what little I have installed (WhatsApp, Tumblr, the Pleco Chinese dictionary and a game). Now, to make momentary room to install some updates, I cancelled Pleco, intending to redownload it later: but now there is no room for it anymore. I also cancelled Tumblr, but now there is no room for neither Pleco nor Tumblr. How is that possible?

I have procured an SD card in hopes that it would help me, and set up my phone so it primarily uses that, but I still can't download the apps.

Feb 6, 2006
WTF?
It looks like you bought a phone with basically no internal storage (4 GB?!). There are ways to try to move app installs to the SD card, but I'm not familiar with them since I haven't had to do it. If it's at all feasible, return that phone and get a Moto G or E.

ClassActionFursuit
Mar 15, 2006

I'd imagine if he's in a place where a Huawei is an option he's not in a place where a good phone is but yeah, you're pretty much hosed. 4GB would have to be completely unusable in any situation. SD cards don't really do anything as internal storage is necessary for things like the OS and app updates which I think you've figured out. There is only one viable solution if you can't get rid of the device: root and symlink the SD card to the phone's internal storage. I haven't seen that done since 2010 so I'll be no help in doing this if this is the road you want to go down.

the last time I had to root and symlink was years ago for me too, but it was pretty easy and made that horrible Samsung Galaxy 3 usable at least.
then again, there were plenty of guides around since quite a few idiots like me bought that phone, not sure how it is for your device.

in all seriousness though, if there is a way for you to get a Moto G, or E, even if it isn't the newest generation, you'll probably end up a lot happier with that option.

Well the steps are simple enough: Find a root solution for your phone, format the SD card properly, then use an app that will then do the action. I'd have no way to know how easy finding root for your phone is or what apps get used for that nowadays but I'm sure a trip to the xda forums can at least show you what you're dealing with.

My Moto X is finally driving me to rid myself of it.

I can get a new Nexus 6 for $450 - should I go with that? Or should I hang in there a few more months and get the new Nexus phones? Being a hugephone doesn't matter to me; I just am wary about paying for a nearly-year old phone.

http://m.androidcentral.com/first-five-things-know-about-new-moto-g

The Moto G is probably the right choice for 99% of Android users, and 90% of Goons. It has good build quality with no real shortcomings, runs great/clean software, and is dirt cheap. Unless someone specifically wants a phablet, it's probably a winning choice for a small price. And I paid full price for an HTC M7 and Sony Z3. The daily experience with the Moto G is no worse than any flagship but at a third the price. It's a great time for Android as a result.

Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure over 1% of android user are on Verizon and unlike the X, Moto didn't make the new G carrier agnostic. That one little bit would have pushed it over into "perfect phone" range.

I'm going to go ahead and call it that the Moto X will be released the week of September 7th. Why? Because I'm going on vacation and new toys that i'm interested in always seem to be released while I'm away.

Last year it was the Moto 360 and the year before that it was the Nexus 7 2013.

I picked up an LG G4 a few weeks ago and I'm pretty happy with it. The best part is definitely the camera. Have a few sample shots:

(taken with manual ISO) obligatory waluigi

The one of the pop filter is especially impressive to me, I've never seen a smartphone camera pick up those kinds of details (you can see printing details in the Waluigi pictures that I didn't notice when I was taking the photo). It also performs above and beyond the s6 in terms of low-light shots.

The performance is decently fast most of the time but there is the occasional hitch when changing apps or opening a new one, it hasn't really been a problem though. I imagine it will depend on what apps you tend to run on your phone in the background and how many are running concurrently.

As far as the "not huge" requirement, the LG G4 is undeniably large at 5.5". However, the subtle curve adds some ergonomics that make one-handed use more comfortable and the phone certainly doesn't feel huge to hold and is sturdy and comfortable to hold. While it looks pretty sharp even with the non-leather backs, what isn't so sharp is the build materials. There's just no getting around that the phone undeniably feels cheap to hold, but I've gotten used to it and it's not nearly as bad as some people make it out to be. I will say that the demo models I tried out with the leather back feels better in the hand, but it does appear to mark up more easily than other types of leather products and is especially prone to wear around the corners and edges.

All in all, pretty good phone despite the shortcomings and the perks of expandable storage and a replaceable battery put it above other options for me.

The LG G phones have really small bezels and the screen:body ratio of the G4 is like 73% so it's definitely smaller than say the iPhone 6+ which also has a 5.5" screen but is kind of a whalephone. The G2 and G3 are both much smaller in hand and pocket than the screen size suggests, I imagine the G4 is the same.

IFA isn't really closely followed in the US. They may announce the launch dates for the X Play and X Style there, but I'm going to bet that the Pure Edition US release goes without fanfare with them just showing up at Best Buy and Amazon one day. Motorola already said September and I bet that's about as specific we're going to get until you can just buy them.

It's actually a pretty good comparison. The 410 is really the most direct successor to the S4 Pro that's in the Nexus 4. It should be the same to slightly faster. I'm going to guess that the flash storage in use on the G will be faster than the Nexus 4 though due to the improvements over the years. In all, it should be a small but decent increase in performance.

The new G has a GSM (XT1540) variant and a CDMA (XT1548) variant (for Sprint, US Cellular, Virgin Mobile.) Two different SKUs and neither has all the necessary bands/radios to work on Verizon.

This is in contrast to the new X which has every band and every radio for every carrier in the US under one SKU

I'm going to guess there's a limitation in the 410 in the number of simultaneous radios/bands it can support which is why they had to break up the SKUs and Moto figured that it wasn't worth making a 3rd SKU for Verizon since they have fewer prepaid customers and you can get a 2015 Moto E LTE for cheaper. The LTE version of the Moto E even has the same 410 processor in it, it's just driving a lower resolution screen.

It's about the number of SKUs they want to make.

They are already stuck making two SKUs for some reason. I'm guessing it's a limitation in the SoC used because otherwise they would do the same thing they were doing with the Moto X and make one SKU to rule them all. So, if they wanted to make a Verizon version, they would have to present a 3rd SKU and I'm guessing their analysis shows it's not worthwhile to do so when they already have the low end represented in that market with the E.
