Last Buffalo posted:This is more a fault of the show's writing than anything else, but they don't make a great case for the Rock being a good businessman or a wise alternative to Reggie. The Rock's character has done little but spout a few canned words of wisdom, say "look man I've been there, take it from me" and get people to sign up. It's his job; it's what he knows he was hired for. I'm still waiting for The Rock to snap and go on a bender, or start doing some monstrous power plays because he's been talked up as a relentless maniac on the field.

Last Buffalo posted:This show feels like it's written by a team of cynical white frat boys trying to talk about the lives of rich black athletes and using Maxim and ESPN as their own points of reference. Say it ain't so! Every woman and her wardrobe choice is integral to the overall story arc. For instance in this scene: Tracy uses her body as a sort of polygraph to compel Spence to admit the truth about not getting an MRI. So it was completely necessary to have a scene at the beach. And of course what would an NFLer trying to rehabilitate his playboy image be without a house littered with unemployed, hot women just lounging around all day long because why the hell not. This is not simply eye candy. The inherent subtext is an illustration of the ingrained manner in which commercialization and objectification of women has overridden their natural need for actualization as individuals. The Rock may not be a good financial advisor. Some clues: Lent out the $300,000 That was all he had in his bank account. But he didn't realize at the time. But he has other bank accounts he didn't know about. The "Old man" didn't want to hire him. He's really just a sales man like at a car dealership. He was hired for his connections and not his skills at money management.

It's no different than having exclusive memberships to whatever clubs are appropriate to your industry. It's a way to start a conversation.

He LOANED Vernon the money. They've said repeatedly that Spencer was hired for his connections, and Joe seems to be the only one at the firm who likes him. No protagonist on the show is particularly good at their job (unless it's Football).

Golden Bee posted:He LOANED Vernon the money. I'd disagree, none of the protagonists seem to be particularly bad at their jobs - Spencer has been successful at introducing people to Joe, plus he's helped Ricky out with the PR thing. We haven't really seen Joe work yet, just party, have we? And the agent did get Vern a big bump on the contract - may not be what Vern wanted but gently caress, sometimes expectations are unrealistic. So far nobody here really seems like a major antagonist besides Reggie - hell, the shady lawyer calmed down to $150k. It's still a shakedown, yeah, and we're not supposed to like the guy. Even Reggie, at worst, is just feeding off of Vern. Doesn't seem to be actively trying to sabotage him. This is Entourage: Football Edition. Entourage had no real antagonists for the first season, it was a warm up lap, and I'm expecting exactly the same here.

I really do think that the guy who bankrupted himself, save for a few grand he had stashed in a forgotten account, in the first episode, is good with money.

His job isn't to be good with money. It's to introduce the guys who are good with money to football players.

He even said that Joe handles the money, the agent handles the contracts, and he handles everything in between in the episode prior, which was then referenced in this episode

Just needs to keep his poo poo together and not ruin his marriage over lolz.

Goddamn do people get worked about about theme songs and credit sequences, though. It's nothing special but man, I guess some people never get exposed to the real obnoxious poo poo if they think the opening is awful. As to the episode, can't believe Rock wouldn't just meet with the woman for the sake of his client and friend. I'm sure that's gonna be explored, but it's really telling how he goes around lecturing everyone about not getting caught up in their own egos while he loses it whenever it comes time for him to follow his own advice. What they do with that is gonna either make or break this show for me. Arsonist Daria fucked around with this message at 18:38 on Aug 3, 2015 |

Everything with the urn was weird as hell, chucking it over the fence at the start, the rock not thinking it was weird or disrespectful to casually scoop his dead friends ashes from the seat of his car because he braked too hard and spilled them.

I actually like the intro tune. It reminded me of the NBA playoffs song, but it's not all off key and poo poo. It has melody. My report card: True Detective turned into a stinky turd, Ballers has been pretty good and it's still fun to watch, and Brink is still loving hilarious.
