I figure I already know the answer given how toothless the FEC is, but that Jeb! guac bowl got me thinking about political contributions.

Are candidate merchandise purchases considered political donations, or would it be something like the difference between the price and the MSRP for the item? Could a candidate open up a web store that sells $100 paper clips by the gross to skirt individual donation caps? Could Scott Walker privately sell a half-acre of land to the Koch brothers who got into a 'bidding war' with each other that drove the price into the millions? If an athlete ran for office, could they sell autographed memorabilia for large markups while campaigning as a 'private separate side business' and then funnel that money into their campaign without anyone batting an eye?

Where is the line actually drawn with regards to physical goods being sold?

Merchandise purchases are political donations. Not just the profit - the entire gross price, including shipping & handling. They are thus subject to the maximum donation cap. The money spend on the product itself is just a fundraising expense.

Scott Walker selling his own land to the Koch Brothers at a very high markup and then funneling the money into the campaign would probably be considered an illegal 'straw donation.' Same with an athlete selling autographed materials could be illegal as well for the same reason, depending on the circumstances.

Sorry, I shouldn't have said that the State Representative was supporting Michele Bachmann. According to the indictment, he was supporting the mysterious "Candidate A", which could be anyone.

Well, if it was "his" it would still be sufficiently vague. "Their" would probably be the preferred pronoun for anonymity, however.

He's pushing as far right as he can get.

When I saw him in Iowa, he:

Denied evolution and global warming
Pushed for the Keystone XL and drilling in ANWR
Was strongly against all labor unions
Wanted to give more power to the military and intelligence agencies to fight terrorism
Was against any minimum wage increase
Was against illegal immigration
Was for charter schools and vouchers
Wanted to lower taxes on "job creators"
Was strongly against gay marriage

I don't think there's a single issue where you define him as center-right.

The Trump campaign is hitting back at the Harvard students who pulled an elaborate prank on the Republican presidential candidate, convincing him that he had been endorsed by the school’s student paper.

“The students who perpetrated this are fraudsters and liars, but frankly it was a waste of only a few minutes,” Donald Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks told The Hill.

Trump was tricked by members of The Harvard Lampoon masquerading as Harvard Crimson staffers into a photo op, under the guise that he was being endorsed by the paper.
In reality, the endorsement was part of an ongoing prank war between the Lampoon and the Crimson.

"Mr. Trump attended the great Wharton School of Finance,” Hicks added, "a school that has more important things to do.”

Too bad Texas doesn't give too many fucks about either issue, illegal voter provisions nor gerrymandering. The courts rule, the lege goes back to the drawing board and does another reprehensible district plan or passes another unconstitutional voting provision. Wash, rinse, repeat.

If they can spend the entire general election getting BenEmailFosterMonica-ghazigate topics brought up in the media it'll just be another avenue of attack for them against Clinton to try and win the election. True, we are the Vermont of the West Coast so it isn't surprising to find a large base of support. I work at the venue in concessions and just got the word about it from my boss and thought it was interesting, he has my vote but I am under no illusions about him winning the primary.

Pretty much. Although Hillary is also here, and she only got 140 people to show up for her 40,000 a plate campaign dinner. Because we're so small (7 EVs) and late in the primary season (June), politicians only show up once a campaign season to collect some money and accept the blessing of the mob on the waterfront park.

Yes, that was kind of my point? I mean, there's a reason that Gowdy's committee has already declared they're releasing their report until 2016 and I don't think there's a sane person who thinks it's because they're still working. They're going to continue to Just Ask Questions for another year and change and then unleash some reports that say the results are 'inconclusive' or that matters are 'as yet unresolved' and table them to restart investigation in around 2020 to release reports in the summer of 2022.

Former president Bill Clinton had a private telephone conversation in late spring with Donald Trump at the same time that the billionaire investor and reality-television star was nearing a decision to run for the White House, according to associates of both men.

[...]

The 42nd president listened intently and then analyzed Trump’s prospects and his desire to rouse the GOP base, the Trump allies said.

The tone of the call was informal and Clinton never urged Trump to run, the four people said. Rather, they said, Clinton sounded curious about Trump’s moves toward a presidential bid and told Trump that he was striking a chord with frustrated conservatives and was a rising force on the right.

One person with knowledge of Clinton’s end of the call said the former president was upbeat and encouraging during the conversation, which occurred at a time Trump was speaking out about GOP politics and his prescriptions for the nation.
