The whole yard and common room being the only places they can take has me less enthused. I made a cleaning cupboard and stocked it with weight benches/phones/spare stuff. Pretty much used it as a storage room, would have been great if they took that over. Same with shops. Gangs should totally take over shops, you get shipments in, perfect for smuggling weapons, extorting money, etc. Also things like the workshop. Let them gently caress with your finance operation.

If they made storage rooms capturable, would they be shaking down the janitors? It doesn't make a whole lot of sense, to be honest. That said, I'd like to see gang members be able to be employed for the purposes of getting easier access to contraband. Like, hire a gang member in the kitchen, and now EVERY shipment of food (not every box, but every shipment) is going to have some contraband in it, without fail. That sort of thing. More complicated escape plans too. Plans that would require a distraction, such as a powerout or a riot... such as using your mattress to be able to cover the barbed wire at the top of a fence to climb over. Stealing keys. Hiding in a trashbag and getting thrown out. Something more than simple tunnels.

Shaking down the janitors would, they have keys to the staff rooms, chemicals that can be used as drugs/poison, etc. I'm not saying they'd be shaking them down for cash, i'm saying they'd be doing it for contraband. E: Maybe instead of shaking them down, using that cash to buy drugs? dogstile fucked around with this message at 13:46 on Aug 3, 2015 |

You guys use common rooms for entertainment? My common room exists only to have chairs for AA meetings.

It seems kind of weird to have TVs and pool tables outside so yeah I use common rooms as entertainment rooms. Usually the AA meetings room is separate, as well.

I wonder if your can still have programs of they take it over. Probably not, but I would love to see AA meeting sponsored by the East Side Saints

I've taken to putting prayer mats in the Yard in addition to having the Chapel and a few hours of free time every day, and I still routinely catch guys praying their entire yard allotment. Also, I guess I didn't notice this, but prisoners now don't sleep unless the regime is Sleep, so my abuse of lockup times is a thing of the past. Fortunately, turns out inmates really only need like 5 hours of sleep a night so I still have a hefty chunk of morning lockup time, which is nice for making people show up to chow in a passable mood.

Yard time doesn't count as free time for scoring purposes and is much easier to police! It also concentrates the inmates for dog searches, so it's good for finding all the poison and medicine that the fuckers invariably took from the cleaning cupboard and infirmary during work and reform programs. I use free time as an hour after Eat to make sure that people finish their meals, and people with a critical need can go take care of business before work starts. But that is it. Free time is one of the three times people start trouble and they are very difficult to control because they can go wherever. At least with the other two trouble times (eat and yard), people are concentrated enough that you can set up guard patrol times to keep things civil.

They can use them during lockup or sleep (if they aren't asleep), which is handy since they don't do a lot else during that time. Also do you have spiritual guidance scheduled? I think that satisfies the spirituality need a lot better than inmates just using prayer mats on their own time.

Ok, its pretty much impossible to get gang members in as medium security. 100 dudes in, one gang member. Of course, he immediately stabbed a snitch.

I've been considering putting mats in the cells, but I'm reluctant to put something in that only 30% of the population will even use. And yeah, I actually have two Chapel services every day since inmates that actually attend those things are basically shoo-ins for parole. There's still a fair subsection of inmates that don't attend services and maintain a high Spirituality need for some reason.

I've started sticking my 'always gets attacked' prisoners (snitches, and ex law enforcement mostly) in their own protective custody-only mansion cells under permanent lockdown so they get food delivered to them. They can meet every need except for clothing, despite being linked to a shared laundry. I figured janitors or guards would deliver them some fresh clothes but I guess not. How have you guys been handling PC/vulnerable dudes short of building them their own mini prison?

Permanent solitary.

Snitches get stitches primarily during Eat, Yard, and Shower. Beyond that they can sometimes get hit during Free Time but it's rare someone gets the opportunity unless you're being super lax with weapon enforcement. I had good luck with simply moving the PC regime up a couple of hours so they would eat and hit the yard a couple hours before everyone else. Basically by the time all the people who really want to kill them show up, the snitch is already gone and is starting his work day/back in his cell/whatever. I don't use Shower at all (I keep showerheads in cells, in the canteen bathroom, and along one side of the outdoor yard - people stay clean), so that helps a bit with this solution as well.

Put storeroom/visitation/staff room/classroom/other simple to build rooms next to your kitchen. When the kitchen can't keep up with the demand, knock down the wall and move the simple room somewhere else. Refurbishing rooms in general is really useful, so try to make everything at least 7x7 or 8x8 so that they can be converted to something else later.

I agree that maybe the last nice thing to have in the game is a little depth to the staff. Where staff room items need to be used, and that having a bare Staff room replenishes energy in a very slow base rate. maybe add to that eating and self improvement/wages. Much like theme hospital.

On one hand I loved theme hospital and think it would be kinda cool if they added more depth to staff members. Like corrupt guards who will smuggle contraband in for prisoners or whatever. On the other hand, I also really like the 'minimal micromanagement' goal they started out with and have kind of stuck by through their entire development. Having to sort through staff profiles to find the right ones to hire, especially when you can end up with 100s of staff members in a 300+ man prison sounds like it might get tedious. It kind of worked in Theme Hospital when at most your staff would be like 30-40 people

# ? Aug 4, 2015 22:56 |

Yeah, I like the lack of micromanagement. But at the same time I feel like a tiny staff room with no items should not be as effective as a fancy large one with sofas. Just asking for a teeny bit more depth and strategy in building the prison around the staff as well.

I'd like it if guards had traits as well, like "Violent: Hits prisoners again after they've passed out" or "Clumsy: Frequently loses his baton". Things that won't drastically change your prison, but if a prisoner suddenly produces a club because Guard McClutz dropped it in the cell block it'd be fun.
|
# ? Aug 5, 2015 01:25 |
|
Maybe, if they gave staff traits, they also made it so new staff had to come by bus as well instead of just teleporting exactly where you want them. Which would make things "interesting" if you had a riot kicking off but not enough guards to deal with it.
|
# ? Aug 5, 2015 02:38 |
|
Staff are easily replaceable though, and with no repercussions. Even if traits were hidden and you found out about them in time, the overwhelming experience would be cycling dolts out with little to no consequence until you had a good crew. You would have to also simulate unions and such to give the system teeth, and pbbbbbbbttttt
|
# ? Aug 5, 2015 03:30 |

Anyway I don't think it'd add any more fun to the game. Traits for prisoners add a challenge, maybe not so much for employees, and steering around that kind of micromanagement is probably for the better considering the game's focus.

# ? Aug 5, 2015 04:39 |

Given how chaotic the game can get when you have some serious prisoners in there, I can't even imagine how the game would play if you suddenly had guards of different quality and skills to worry about. My guards deal with the escape funnel well enough, I don't need to worry if I have my best man covering the corner of the escape funnel.

Afterthought on this: One of the things you can most easily do to protect snitches and ex-LEOs is simply reassign them to min-sec. This seems anti-logical, but if you have a dedicated min-sec block, none of the min-sec guys are going to be that eager to start something and increase their sentence by a good decade when they're already one foot out of the door. My current prison has had almost a dozen snitches and LEOs come through and none of them have had a finger laid on them just treating them like any other min-sec guy.

The problem I had with PC is that the inmates, even when provided with suitable PC facilities, would waltz like a dumbass through the prison and eventually get shanked.

Yeah, you need staff only airlocks to keep people in their zones.
|
# ? Aug 6, 2015 01:31 |

If you put in the air locks, the prisoners behind them won't have access to anything on the other side. So your PC wing would have to have it's own yard, canteen, etc. I believe the only thing a prisoner will be escorted through a staff only zone for are parole hearings or cell re-assignments. Nothing else. This affects all reform programs like psychologist office, class rooms, visitation, etc.
