I'm not gonna get too excited about that until we see more of the skill loadouts. Even as an irrepressible optimist, I'm forced to notice that most of the skills we've seen so far have to do with accentuating class features, such as the Specialist's Gremlin. Which means that, unless they're gonna give you the option to issue Gremlins to Rangers or something, half of the skills you could potentially cross-pollinate with are useless.

Modders will fix that.

It should be called that, because the original game was called UFO in the civilized world. :smug:

holy crap you can get cross class skills.

1) you shouldn't need to on normal/classic. I don't play brutal/impossible so I wouldn't know.
2) 4-6
3) You'll see a bunch of yellow circles that symbolize explosions. That indicates the UFO is at 50% HP, and therefore has a 50% chance to abandon its mission. You only really want to discourage UFOs instead of finishing them off if it's tearing through your interceptors, which will absolutely happen.
4) You really don't want to abort missions unless you're facing a code black.

Do you wait until you have the cash to buy 4 or so interceptors before launching a satellite on that continent or just have a few and deal with it?

How many yellow circles indicate 50% damage because I've seen a bunch of them when I've swamped a craft and haven't bothered to count.

If they're bouncing all over the craft that's enough. They'll be all over the screen. It'll be really obvious when it happens.

also I usually wait till I get 4 interceptors up and running, but it's not the end of the world if you don't and if you need to get a request or it's the end of the month or something do what you need to do.

You usually want to wait until you have the cash to buy all four since there's the maintenance cost.

Hyperbole aside, I doubt they're going to kill Vahlen. I think the player base genuinely likes her under the grousing. She'd be a great deus ex machina to arrive with a game-changer in X-COM's darkest hour.

There's a few things that are obviously going to change once it goes by an editor. If you look closely at the soldier screen they show off, when they highlight the soldier skills selector, the tooltip uses 'his', even though the soldier they're showing off is a woman.

This mostly amused me because I can see one of the businesspeople noticing this during the presentations, bringing it up at the next stand-up meeting or something, and some unlucky programmer dying a little bit inside because now he knows he has to waste part of his day modifying string resources. :v:

On the subject of the Shotgun reloader mod, I saw that it's only good for the first reload, so that seems fair. I might have preferred if it a single-use, no-action item instead.

That's what I was thinking. I sure hope it allows you to choose when to use that free reload. But eh, it's not out yet, who can tell. Still thinking the scope will win out in most situations, even if it gets buffed before launch - more aim is always important. Quite frankly it might have the same issue you have with EW scopes - you just stick it on everything.

I don't know, depending on the prevalence of abilities like double tap and rapid fire, if you can choose when to use the free reload it could be very handy for those "Kill that thing NOWNOWNOW" situations.

We have the tools, we have the talent!

Ah, just had a very nice LW Supply Barge experience. Yes, my back-up Medic inadvisedly double moved, triggered a pod of 'lids, and got eaten despite the efforts of the rest of my team to save him. And yes, my two SHIVs rolled out of the mission with five hit points left between them.

But storming the bridge and the six Outsiders, including one double HP super Outsider, went perfectly. I hit one of the side doors, and four of them hid behind the flight computer and a fifth behind the power source in the middle. Then I popped open the middle door and let 'em have it with my Rocketeer with Ranger and Mayhem, and killed two of them and maimed the rest. My Infantry girl critted and killed two more with back to back Light 'em up shots on the now coverless Outsiders, my Gunner critted and killed the only healthy one from the other side door, and my two mangled SHIVs double teamed the Big Outsider for the win.

It was awesome! Nothing's going to stop me....

What was that? You say that Confounding Light just triggered with my entire A Team and half my SHIVs either wounded, damaged, or fatigued? That I'm going to have to do Confounding Light AND Gangplank with only my B Team and C Teams and a couple of SHIVs? :cripes:

Strategy layer and antfarm look amazing. I know I'm way late but I mean with a feature list like this in the video how could I not be excited afresh anyway:
  • Certain Foundry-like options exist outside of basic research, and these are randomized every playthrough. Research and equipment are no longer purely linear discoveries because of this; like training roulette for equipment, you could get different ammo types or special armors in a new order.
  • Instead of excavating, it appears you have to repurpose/remove old alien facilities first, which are unusuable to you, into something you can work with
  • Scientists and engineers are individuals now, with their own names, appearances, and skills, missions often focus on rescuing these individuals
  • You can staff facilities with soldiers, scientists, and engineers on an individual basis, which will improve the facility (e.g. faster wound recovery, research, etc)
  • Not only can you pick what class rookies become, you can have them train to skip the rookie level entirely and go right to specialist
  • Lots of UI improvements, like the ability to sort your staff by class
  • Soldiers can change attitude independent of voice, which affects the flavor of their animations and the subject/tone of their dialog
  • Strategy layer is much more dynamic, it's up to you where to go and what kind of missions/activities to pursue, where to grow, VS XCOM1's "sit and wait for the game to throw a mission at you"
  • Dark Events are similar to Abductions in that you choose which path to take, but it's more influential and the result changes the tactical game re: what the enemies do and are capable of, instead of just rewards. Also have to be balanced against other player actions and missions.

So what if I'm late to the party, this is one party I want to stay at forever. :allears:
The heavier focus on changes and unpredictability is great, especially when it comes to replay value. I loved Training Roulette, more stuff like that is incredible.

Pst...

I really like the idea of emergent strategy versus knowing exactly what you're gunning for and just dividing up foundry and research projects based on whether you get more engineers or scientists first. This feels like it's going to be uphill until you break even with the Aliens and then they ramp it up to match your new toys. Probably will transition from survive > grow > exterminate and the aliens will most likely have progressively harder and more intense dark events as you go.

Yeah. This is one of the reasons I paid for Massive Chalice. It's not enough 'game' and it didn't turn out to be as fun to play as I hoped, but the basic idea of it was something I wanted to succeed so we'd see this more often.

Now, the only barrier, IMO, is that they didn't go to the natural conclusion; if they were imitating MC in Xcom 2, everybody should fight, science, engineer, doctor, and so forth. You assign the field medic to the base hospital when they're experienced. You take your engineer along on dangerous missions because he's great with field repairs. Your training supervisor is also good in the field. When you're desperate, you might need to take your lead scientist into the field because you need more bodies.

It's closer to that, though, since you have different staff to assign around and a slightly randomized effectiveness to your various paths, which make you have to rebalance and strategize each game. You won't necessarily always have the same wrote start of all-satellites or whatever.

There's a guy I work out with at the gym who is mid 60s and his daughter is about 5. Shen doesn't strike me as being quite the rake he is, but all the same, go Shen.

In my mind now, Shen was a wrestler and bodybuilder in college, like Neil DeGrasse Tyson. If the aliens had come sooner, he'd have been on the front lines, kicking rear end.

Not sure, but I know there will be a file that contains all the generated names and we might be able to edit them.

So we could make Beagle or JhonnyLump as an engineer working on the Latrines or something.
