Wiggly Wayne DDS posted:they still don't market it as adjusting the colours on your screen depending on the time of day to improve your sleep schedule? I don't know that they ever "marketed" it like that, but plenty of people do use it for that reason. Blue light inhibits melatonin production, so staring into a screen late at night disrupts your sleep schedule. That is an entirely uncontroversial point.

Instead of using f.lux, you could always try taking actual supplemental melatonin. If you're having trouble going to sleep or with sleeping in general, you likely need more help than simply changing the colour temperature of your monitor for a few hours.

I've read that taking melatonin supplements too frequently can mess with your overall melatonin production and really gently caress things up. So maybe taking brain chemicals to knock you out regularly isn't much more healthy than doing other drugs to go to sleep regularly without supervision from a doctor. For what it's worth, I saw a sleep specialist and he didn't mention melatonin supplements at all, but did say to avoid screens for two hours before bed. When I asked about melatonin, he said that you would want sub-milligram amounts about 6 hours before you went to bed, which isn't a form you can get off the shelf, nor is it a method recommended on the bottle.

Moving away from screen colors for a bit... Where the hell is the recycling bin now? I see it on the desktop, but it's not actually in the Desktop folder accessed in Explorer, so if I want to remove it from my desktop, I wouldn't have access to it any more.

Does anyone have experiences with upgrading small Win 8 tablets? First, how much free space should be required by the upgrade? Will doing a clean (keep nothing) upgrade affect amount of space required? My tablet came with a free Office 2013 license, should that still be valid afterwards? What if I do a reset later, would that affect that kind of preload? (I don't have an Office 365 subscription.)

Anyone else using Intel (4600) graphics with dual monitors getting VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE system crashes since upgrading? I've been getting them 3-4 times a day, usually when playing video, and there doesn't appear to be a newer driver than the release day version. Happens on both an upgrade and a clean install

Windows fluctuates wildly in how much hard drive space it leaves open on the C drive. Sometimes there's 8 GB available, and yesterday it filled every single byte even though I wasn't installing anything. This caused a game to not be able to write its profile save, corrupting my profile, so I'm sad now. What/Why does it do this?

So maybe taking brain chemicals to knock you out regularly isn't much more healthy than doing other drugs to go to sleep regularly without supervision from a doctor. I've been seeing a sleep specialist since some time around the middle of last year, and was told to take melatonin since it inhibits REM sleep (which I apparently dive straight into within 30 minutes and stay there most of the night, which isn't normal). It has the lowest potential for side effects, and it's generally just supposed to be used to try to get your sleep patterns back to a more natural state. I tend towards insomnia because of restless sleep, and have tried prescription sleep aids and medications for wakefulness, and they either do nothing or they aren't worth the side effects. Long term problems with melatonin seem to be related to use in children, because of the potential to affect other hormones and in turn affect fertility and sexual development. It's not something that everyone with a problem falling asleep should actually be using. Also, the regular dosing is usually anywhere between 0.1 and 10 mg (or higher, depending on the individual), and seems to be taken anywhere from 10 days to three years. There's no real standard dose or treatment period. Anyway, Windows. I've upgraded both of my parents' PCs. As people have mentioned before, Solitaire has ads, Nvidia's driver didn't install correctly and I had to install the one from their website, and the background on my mom's computer kept going black until I installed all of the most recent updates. Other than that, no huge issues.

If you're installing the most recent RST package it doesn't support Z77 anymore. Look for an older version that does.

Maybe you guys can help shed light on this thing I'm having trouble wrapping my brain around. How can Windows 10 only be like 4 GB when Windows 7 is 40+? Is Windows 10 missing a bunch of features under the hood or was Windows 7 bloated as hell? Is it really possible for "better programing" to increase both features and performance while reducing OS file size by over a literal order of magnitude?

You have to upgrade from 7 to 10 at least once with your activated windows 7 PC to have activated windows 10. You can do that right now and clean install on the new drive or install 7 on the new drive and then upgrade, it's up to you. After upgrading you can refresh the pc back to like-new state if you want a clean install. There's no automagic way to put your windows 7 key into a web page somewhere and get a windows 10 key (unfortunately).
