So I think this news post just kind of slipped under the radar because it's only applicable for korean server testers, but... if anyone wants to play/keep playing after the test period is over: source: http://tos.nexon.com/news/notice/view.aspx?noticearticlesn=108789 The basic jist of it is, they're opening a test server (basically extending test period to fix more bugs/optimization) for korea starting on Monday 2pm. The end date of the testing period is TBD. If you want in, you'll have to login, go to the tester forum, and submit an application, which involves ticking a checkbox and mashing OK. Deadline is 11:59 Sunday night korean time. It will only be open to those who apply before this cutoff time. That aside, any more thoughts on gameplay? What are you guys playing as? Currently running archer-ranger-sapper-sapper. 1:2 ratio of statted STR to DEX. The traps are a load of fun! Stake stockades are neat for mobbing, since I can lay down two facing opposite directions and then lead a pack of monsters back and forth through them. It almost feels like cheating. Anything that doesn't die can get mopped up with a broom trap or just shot at. Not sure if I want to get 3rd circle sapper to try out the last trap (which admittedly doesn't look very appealing), or switch to something else... Only had a chance to play a bit so far (~lvl. 15, enough to get to the 2nd class). My thoughts: - The game defaults to fullscreen windowed mode, and afaik that's the only fullscreen mode. Perfect for me, but might be annoying for some. - The boss fights so far are incredibly fun. Reminds me of Dark Souls, fighting gigantic monsters 10x your size and whittling them down bit by bit while avoiding their telegraphed attacks. If they can manage to keep this going, I'll be happy (until they introduce bullshit like unavoidable attacks ). - The joypad controls are okay for combat, but you basically have to go Joypad + Keyboard + Mouse to be able to use the full UI, which I don't like. One thing in particular that bugs me is that the D-Pad AND the left stick are set for movement, and afaik the right stick doesn't actually do anything. I really hope they rework it so the D-Pad is used exclusively for UI control and the left stick for movement. - The way they've got passives set up atm is kinda silly, and you literally have to stand around like a jackass and wait for your character to learn the skill rather than just paying your money and running off with your new skill. You also have to pay silver to learn poo poo that should be basic to a class and their functioning, like how to use Two-Handers as a Highlander (class that's supposed to hit poo poo with giant gently caress-off 2-Handers). - UI interaction is kind of a mess on joypad atm. There's a dedicated toggle to go into "UI Mode" in order to interact with the various menus and poo poo with a somewhat awkward toggle (RB + Start, which is even more awkward on a PS4 controller with it's inlaid Start/Options buttons); once pressed, the D-Pad acts like you'd probably expect it to and move the cursor to each available option you could click on in the interface, and I mean ALL of them. If there's a spot on the interface you could normally click on, the D-Pad will be able to select it, and this gets really annoying when you have poo poo like your inventory and whatnot open and want to switch between windows, because there's no really easy way to move the cursor around save by using the left stick, which acts as a mouse for whatever reason. Tbh, there's a lot of poo poo I could say about the UI, but I'll save that for their forums. - The open-source translation is okay, I guess, but there's still some bits that bug me. For instance, here's a quest in my log right now: code:
Overall, I think the game's shaping up nicely thusfar, and it'll be great if they can fix some of the more annoying poo poo (UI shenanigans, how passives are learned), so I'm kind of hopeful.

For anyone interested, I did some testing of Wizard skills (Energy Bolt and Earthquake) and varying levels of MATK. Also, I did some quick tests looking at Spirit/SP Recovery. A few interesting results from my tests: 1.) You always see multiple hits per spell (e.g. 51,21 or 47,25) but the total damage is always the same. There is no variance in total magic damage. 2.) +1 MATK = +1 total damage per enemy. Again, the individual hit numbers may change, but the total damage dealt per enemy is always the same. You always gain +1 total damage for every +1 MATK. 3.) Different spells will scale differently with respect to each other, but the spells themselves appear to scale the same across each level. The damage on a level 1 energy bolt will scale the same with +MATK as the level 3 version. 4.) SP recovery is a simple X/20. When standing, you gain X SP every 20 seconds. Whatever your SP recovery is, is what you'll gain during those 20 second ticks. When sitting, this X/10. Like MATK this also has linear scaling. 10SP recovery is 10SP every 20 seconds. 20SP recovery is 20 SP every 20 seconds. Basically, if you're a wizard, don't bother with spirit for a long, long time. Just dump everything in to INT. Mana potions will give you all the SP you need. 5.) Spells never crit. For anyone interested, I graphed out some of my data showing the growth rate of Energy Bolt and Earth Quake from level 1, 2 and 3 with varying levels of MATK. While I don't have hundreds of points of data, I'm fairly confident, given the nature of magic damage that I've seen in several hundred damage tests, that the trend lines are accurate. Energy Bolt + EQ / MATK damage graph: Also, the grind is real. Especially around level 30. I don't mind a grind, but I was hoping it wouldn't show up until at least level 100.

Drakes posted:Enough about the grind! There's an auction house now so you can get stupid hats for cheap if you are lucky. Beta is almost over so I guess it's a good time to post some impressions: - poo poo is grindy. Waaaay too grindy and not in a fun way but rather "I'm level 15 and all the enemies in this area are 20+ so I have to grind before I can kill the boss" type of grindy. Combat is kind of dull at the time and there's very few instances of super rare drops so there's not even any satisfaction to it either. - Game looks gorgeous, no doubt about it. It struggles on my toaster laptop and going from highest to lowest settings doesn't actually change how things look that much but hot drat, everything that is terrain or architecture looks jaw-dropping good. Monsters and characters kind of vary in quality. - The controls are pretty good and playing with a gamepad is actually probably the best way to approach this thing. Control mapping still needs a lot of work though and as it is using the mouse and keyboard for a few things is still more convenient and sometimes necessary (placing down campfires comes to mind.) You can't rebind anything at the moment, either. - Loot and gear sucks at the moment. There's very few rare drops, almost nothing that changes your appearance aside from hats and equipment is tiered oddly so level requirements for it go like 1>15>40>70 or some poo poo; on top of there not being rare drops for every tier and weapons having different types of damage that make it so that you need at least two different weapons at all times if you want to exploit enemy weaknesses. What it means is that you'll probably buy a weapon at level 1 and still be using it 20 levels later simply because there's no other alternative aside from weapon refining. Speaking of refining... - Refining SUCKS. You can only safely upgrade equipment up to +5, which by the way costs a hefty amount of change, and after that you have 3+ chances to break your poo poo per upgrade attempt. What does failing an upgrade do? It takes away 1 potential from your equipment and resets all the upgrades entirely. Oh, what's potential you ask? Well, each piece of equipment can only fail X amount of refining attempts or be traded X amount of times before it can't be worked with/traded anymore. I fully expect cash shop items that help with the refining process and that's gonna be a ton of bullshit but I guess it's still better than in RO though... right? Right? - Quests are lame for the most part, even those that have some kind of wonky scripting for "cutscenes". Tons of generic kill X things, interact with Y boxes and gather Z amount of bear asses with the most unique stuff being an escort quest that had me walk some refugees a whole 20 steps towards someone else. On the flip side bosses are frequent and actually fairly cool but they get old fast since they are all massive HP sponges that are only hard because of attrition rather than any real need for strategy thanks to how slow they attack. - The maps are not at all like they were in RO, which seems to shock a lot of people, and are more like linear paths that connect in different ways rather than huge open areas. To their credit some of the paths are actually a little hidden and can contain optional stuff that ranges from secret bosses and lore documents to statues of a certain goddess; the latter being vital since they reward you a single stat point for interacting with them. Things like exploring the maps, killing new types of monsters, discovering enemy weaknesses, crafting and all that stuff is also tied to both achievements and notachievements that reward you with neat stuff like hair dyes and minute amounts of premium currency as well as filling your bestiary. - Oh yeah, premium currency exists. At the time it can only be used to revive on the spot when you die and to buy a shovel which acts as an offhand weapon. It gives you the ability to use Dig level 1, an ability that would normally be limited only to alchemists and is used to get ores for crafting stuff presumably. I imagine it can help you make some mad dosh too. There ARE costume, armband and hair accessory slots outside of regular equipment so I pray to god most premium stuff will be cosmetic or have very little impact in the game but it probably won't happen. I think that's all that comes to mind at the moment.

RO had 3 head slots, although some stuff would take up to 2 slots. ToS on the other hand has 2 head slots, an armband slot that might or might not be cosmetic and a costume slot that's a complete body change, essentially. On paper ToS gives more variety but at least in this beta costumes only come with a class change. We'd have to wait and see if costumes are made available as drops or released exclusively as rare cash shop items or what. There also doesn't seem to be any clothes dye just yet so all costumes of the same type look identical. On the bright side class uniforms do look quite different from one another and even between male and female versions so that's cool. Here's a good example from a screenshot someone took during tonight's event. I kind of hope they include a few different faces or at least eye colors, too.

Baldbeard posted:So is the game good or what? FWIW I played RO throughout numerous betas, and stopped right around renewal. When the English servers finally came back up in like, 2002, I was one of the first Knights on the server (back when counter attack was crazy good and you could basically CA MVPs to death all day). I think it's pretty fair to say I've got my fair share of experience of the 1-100 grind in RO. TOS is better. The combat in TOS is much quicker, you can jump, you can cast spells while moving, and a lot of your skills will hit multiple enemies. If you've ever played Ys: Origins, the combat will feel very familiar to you. I wouldn't be surprised if they used that game as their blueprint for TOS, because it feels nearly identical. There are a lot more monsters in smaller clumps in TOS, but the zones are going to be much smaller and more linear. With the increase in density you'll most likely be killing 2 or 3 mobs at a time even if you don't want to, the density is that high. With a party, you can probably continuously kill 10-12 mobs at a time for hours. There are even a few spots in each zone that have higher than normal spawns. I'm not sure if they're intended, but I stumbled on to a few. The spawn rates in those spots are pretty much instantaneous, so if you like chilling and grinding out thousands of bad guys in an hour, you're in luck. There are also two special flavors of monster. A "blue" version of a mob will give you a giant pile of XP when killed, usually two or three levels worth. You'll want to hunt these down immediately whenever you see one. I also found a flashing white version that dropped a larger than normal amount of loot, usually four or five times the normal amount. These help shake the usual mob grind up a bit. Also, a very important thing to note, only the person that last hits a normal mob will get loot. Attacking a mini-boss or boss will still guarantee loot for everyone though, but be prepared to have people kill steal out in the world if this goes unchanged. The biggest difference I noticed is that TOS actually has some semblance of story, and there are many more quests to get you started. In the CBT you can pretty much quest your way up to level 30. They also manage to sprinkle in numerous bosses, I'd say roughly one every five quests or so will result in you fighting a boss. They telegraph their attacks pretty well with little indicators on the ground, and some of them spawn adds that you'll have to manage as well. They're much better designed than the RO MVPs, and there are a lot more of them. They're pretty fun to fight, but the HP values when solo'ing them appear to be a bit overtuned -- some fights as a wizard took me 5-10 minutes to complete. With all of that said, the grind is real, and shows up pretty early on. For the record, I don't mind a grind. Coming from RO I expected it. But it shows up really early. Even before level 30 you'll probably have to start grinding on mobs before going to the next area or tackling the next bunch of quests. I would be much happier with an XP curve where the grind doesn't get "real" until 100-150. Given that the max level is apparently 400+ I think it would be much more appropriate to make it relatively easy for players to hit level 100-150, and then let them go to town and grind out the next 250 levels over a couple years. This may all change in the next beta test, and apparently the korean beta test had modified XP to get them up faster, so this may all be in flux anyway. As it stands, I'm not sure I could stomach the game if the XP curve is this bad at release. Gearman fucked around with this message at 16:03 on Aug 11, 2015 |

Mobs drop loot pretty frequently, and different mobs drop different kinds of loot. For instance, one grinding area dropped tons of level 40 staff and cloth chestpieces, and another dropped cloth and leather pants. Also, Det_no posted:- Refining SUCKS. Refining is fine, I got my staff to +7 and found that going past +5 doesn't increase the amount of stats you get per refine. My staff had +25 magic attack at +5, and +35 magic attack at +7. Refining a rank 3 bow also gave 5 attack per refine, and refining a r2 bow gave 4, so I assume it's solely based on item rank and item type. Btw, shovels drop from field bosses. I'm working on an updated OP, expect it in the next day or two.
