If you've got an NVidia card, you'll get marginally better framerates on Windows 10 than Windows 7 on pre-DX12 games. The FPS improvement really came in Windows 8, but if you're coming from 7, it's new to you! ATI's drivers are a bit more hit-or-miss, especially in CrossFire setups.

A cool thing in windows 10 is how it tells you to "tap" everything regardless if you're using a touchscreen or not. You'd think they'd be able to detect if you actually have a touchscreen or not and dynamically change the wording based on that but I guess that's too advanced for the bangladesh programmer sweatshop this thing came from. Maybe it's because I went straight to 10 from 7 but I'm finding this OS really lovely from a UI standpoint, though under the hood it seems like a lot has changed for the better. Question to anyone who has been using windows 10 for a bit. The first thing I did after install was to go into the privacy options and turn off as much ~stuff~ as possible, including setting each 'modern' app to not run int the background. After a few days, it seems that several of these programs have re-enabled themselves to run in the background. I noticed this today when a desktop notification popped up telling me that i could get a month of free office from the 'Get Office' app. Is there any way for me to actually turn this poo poo off?

Depends. Some of it, like Defender, can only be turned off for a little while since there's no compelling reason not to run it or an alternative. What specific ones are you having trouble keeping off?

I dunno if this applies to plex, but I have a streaming thing called subsonic that works now after I did a "restore" refresh clean install thing. I have it run as a service and it works even without me entering a pin. I had my gf turn my computer on for party music and it just worked with the monitor off and no passwords. Maybe it shouldn't have admin rights, but dang if that wasnt convenient. Still no usb drivers from Asus and sound is missing software bells and whistles, but the increased speed and quality of life is pretty nice. If drivers never work I will be modding or building a Linux ready machine soon when I get money again soon. Thanks for the free update, last chance Microsoft.

croutonZA posted:Is your lock screen set to show a picture or slideshow? If it's the latter, you could poke around Settings > Personalisation > Lock Screen > Advanced Slideshow Settings. There's some settings in there to do with turning off your screen. This has really been bugging me and while my workaround still doesn't mimic exactly how it worked in Windows 8, it's better than before. In Windows 8 if I locked the computer OR left it unlocked on the desktop, after exactly 15 minutes of inactivity it would sleep the monitor based on my Power Options setting (Good). On resume it would display the slideshow then any input would pull up the login screen. If I lock the computer it shows the slideshow for 15 minutes then sleeps the monitor (Also Good). Stock Windows 10 it appears that there's another timer for the Lock Screen that's completely independent from the standard Power Options setting. In the new Settings, go to Personalization > Lock Screen > Advanced Slideshow Settings and you can see the "Turn off screen after slideshow has played for" with set intervals. So now what happens is after 15 minutes of inactivity it goes to the Lock Screen, THEN waits 30 minutes (shortest option) before sleeping the monitor. Kinda defeats the purpose of sleeping the monitor if it's going to run that long. Luckily this can be overridden in the registry via "HKEY_USERS\%Your User String%\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Lock Screen". SlideshowDuration uses a hex value that you can modify to be much shorter. For example, 5 minutes would be 300 seconds + 000 at the end (three trailing zeroes are important) converted to hex is 7A120. For myself Advanced Slideshow Settings still shows 30 minutes, but the duration did change. Now it will do one of two things: If you lock the computer, it will turn off the screen exactly at 5 minutes (or whatever time you set), regardless of your Power Options setting. If the computer is left unlocked it will go through the Power Options timer to the Lock Screen, go through the Lock Screen timer, THEN sleeps the monitor. tl;dr this is dumd and Microsoft needs to fix it.

My experience has been pretty smooth for the most part, but I came across an annoying bug(?) just now. Fallout New Vegas is crashy, this is nothing new, but one of its failure modes is a lock up, but not CTD. Used to be I'd three-finger salute and get the task manager up, and kill it to get back to the desktop in Win7. Just tried that for the first time in 10 and the fancy looking new task manager wouldn't show up over the black screen-sized window of FNV. Had to log out from the Ctrl+Alt+Del screen. I hope that was a fluke.

So I goofed my upgrade by claiming and upgrading to Windows 10 days before upgrading my computer, and now of course Windows 10 won't activate. So far it's not really a big deal except for the grey "Activate Windows" overlay in the bottom right corner while I'm browsing or doing desktop work (goes away while gaming or watching movies full screen), but am I gonna get into a situation where Windows shuts down or stops letting me log in if I don't eventually activate it? Because I'm definitely not dropping $250 to get another key just because of a motherboard upgrade.

Not activating Windows will usually put it into a limited functionality mode. I think along the lines of the "Starter" edition of XP: Limited screen resolution, no desktop wallpaper, limitation on number of running programs. It shouldn't completely lock you out. If you still have the disc and key for your previous Windows version, you can try doing a fresh install, then let that activate, and do the upgrade again.

Might've figured out the reason my mouse cursor keeps disappearing. Dunno. I actually don't have a mouse. I use Joy2Key to turn my joystick's input into mouse and keyboard actions. I also use windows' keyboard-numpad-to-mouse function for more minute control, if I need it, which I toggle on and off with the num lock key. The mouse disappears whenever I turn mousekeys off, and since the computer doesn't think I have a mouse plugged in, maybe it goes to tablet mode? I can still interact with things if I guess the mouse's position. Sorta weird. I dunno.

People have tried these things, with varying degrees of success: -Disabling driver updates from Windows Update and manually installing the latest ones. Even if the numbers are the same, there's apparently some difference between the ones downloaded from nVidia and the ones WU installs for you. -Rolling back to previous drivers, even if they don't explicitly support W10. In any case, using DDU to completely remove drivers is a good precaution before doing any of those two things. Good luck, none of them worked for me. I have this weird issue that just popped up, when I hit the start button and enter a search string windows has all of a sudden decided to prioritize making a web search rather than searching my apps. It's weird cause this worked fine for a couple of days since I upgraded to 10 and now I noticed this weird new behavior. It's rather frustrating cause with how clunky the new 'all programs' menu now is I've come to rely on just searching for whatever I want to run and now I can't. Anyone had something like this happen? edit: oddly enough, seems to have resolved after another reboot. Anyway, all of that aside: When I did my Resets, I let Windows install whatever drivers it wanted.
