I find it pertinent that I defend Olimar's good name. On day 10, he didn't saw he found a new region, he said that he would explore "a different region." It's probably the games way of telling you to explore more, since those parts tend to be pretty spread out.

The make Fae feel bad about her poor Pikmin safety list has been updated with the small amount of death this episode. That death count is going to skyrocket after the Smokey Progg fight, isn't it? Should the Progg get its own death count?

Yes, with an unofficial extra approx side count that includes the deaths in game overs. So, if two hundred are lost each run and 72 are lost in the final attempt only the 72 are added to the total count with the slaughter only showing up in that one post.

Analog computers are a real thing actually! At least, they were. They generally weren't turing complete, which would mean they'd just be able to do the one type of calculation they were designed for, but had a lot of use in millitary applications where they could be entirely powerless and still be used to calculate stuff like what angle to fire a the big guns on a battleship to account for distance and wind direction and such automatically when doing the math in your head isn't accurate enough, and doing it by hand is going to take long enough that whatever you were shooting at wasn't in the same spot anymore. Now they're kinda pointless since even a lovely graphing calculator is practically magic in comparison. There have also been hybrid analog-digital computers, like the Dolphin's complete system seems to be.

I'll venture a thought that the Enigma machine is probably one of the more well known analog computers. Also watching this LP is a lesson in terror. Mostly I feel absolutely awful for those poor pikmin. They're trying their best and yet keep getting guided into water, bombs, or fire.

I was going to mention WW2 computers for the analogue era. Whether it's Enigma, or heavy ship fire control, they were a thing. Bomb safety: how long will it last? There's a part in here! This was not the water safety episode. Veloxyll fucked around with this message at 07:19 on Aug 8, 2015 |

Update Time! Episode 12 - I Don't Like Mushrooms, Guys I'm real sorry for the bad audio balancing in this session, guys, this was the day after I got my blue snowball and learning the proper positioning on the drat thing is a pain in the rear end. But you should also notice a jump in video quality too, and I have my good friend CJacobs to thank for that for teaching me how to actually make and render good quality videos! I promise next session will have better, less quiet audio!

It really seems like the boss fights in this seem to be along the lines of "Throw Pikmin, wait until something visibly changes, throw more Pikmin". But it's cute as poo poo so I can't really complain.

That boss fight would probably have gone much better if you'd used z/right bumper to shift to the overhead view and eliminate your depth perception problems because it's a hell of a lot easier to judge the distance from the overhead view when you're just having to work out the line, not perform mental trigonometry.

After marathonning all this, I can honestly say that you two have a very Pikmin - Olimar relationship. Fae's pathfinding is horrible, her combat skill is generally lacking, but all Gnome has the capability to do is vaguely order her in different directions and give commands she may or may not actually execute as expected.

This LP has been seriously temping me to play these games again after about 10 years or so. Anyway, with Beady it's probably better to dismiss your horde outside of its lair and take a smaller number of Pikmin in. This way you can stay between its legs without dozens of Pikmin going after its legs and getting stomped so you can focus more on where Olimar is facing relative to the shadow of the main body when you throw. If something happens the rest of your Pikmin are just waiting outside.

I'm actually kinda surprised that Pikmin requires this level of dexterity and planning. Maybe it's just that the first game has janky controls/pathfinding/everything, but it looks like a pain in the butt to play. Fae isn't making it look any better, but still, I do remember the game not being very cooperative when I played a bit of it.

The c stick really makes everything better, you just need to have a gentle touch and not care about the 2 pikmin who wander off(your time is worth more than their little lives, they'll learn eventually). Also not directly running into fire/nectar helps too but it's fae and I've accepted this now 12 episodes in.

Also, if you hold down the center-camera button, your lakitu will do its best job of being a follow-cam. Which is to say, it'll sort of lazily arc to point at the general direction Olimar is walking, but, better than nothing sometimes. And, thinking about it, Pikmin is a game that really punishes panicking, especially because setbacks tend to snowball - if you lose a quarter of your army to one Frog Nugget (much better name than wollywog), then the second one is going to be much harder, because it can attack more times before you wear it down and squish even more pikmin. The same with pikmin that start to drown or catch fire; you can save them, but only if you start mashing whistle right away and keep smashing that button until your lovable, horrifying minions fall back in line. Of course, 'try to stop panicking' isn't really useful advice to give someone, so that's really more of a comment on game design than a hot protip. But, you've got thirty days to get thirty parts, so i still like your odds! e: Oh, I did have one other actual mechanics tip. Gnome said at one point that Olimar can throw pikmin as fast as you tap the button, but that isn't strictly true. Each pikmin has to take a quarter-second for Olimar's hand to find it before you throw - unless you use the c-stick to cluster them all up around him so the 'finding ammunition' animation gets skipped. Pull that off, and the little guy has a throwing arm like a machine gun, very useful for putting 50 minions up on a ledge quickly, or covering a boss in bitey death. In return for this bounty of Pikmans I bring you platypus and echidna facts. The monotremes are a highly unusual order of mammals characterised by laying eggs, and consists of the platypus and echidna families. Despite this, they have the one defining feature shared by all mammals - the mammary gland. Unlike most mammals, the monotremes do not have specialised nipples, and instead produce milk through modified sweat glands, which is lapped up from the skin by their young. Other unusual characteristics include the combined genital and anal opening for which their order is named ("monotreme" = "one hole"), known as a cloaca. This is a feature they share with most amphibians, reptiles and birds, putting them in a very confused spot taxonomically. They also have a body temperature that is lower than and fluxuates more than most mammals. Despite the name, the duck-billed platypus's beak is leathery rather than horny like the bill of a real duck. It is largely used for digging around in the mud at the bottom of the river beds in which they live, and as if it wasn't strange enough already, is packed with electroreceptors. Rather than hunting by sight or smell, the platypus detects the minute electrical signals produced by the muscular contractions of the small invertebrates on which they feed. The monotremes are the only order of mammals to have this ability, which is more commonly found in sharks. The males possess a venomous spur on the heel of their back legs, again extremely unusual among mammals. While the venom is not fatal to humans, it is incredibly painful and has been reported to cause short term paralysis as well as discomfort and stiffness that can last for months. Platypodes are also a good deal smaller than most people expect, being about the size of a rabbit. The echidnas are less famous than the platypus, and consist of four seperate species divided into two genera - eight species and three genera, including the extinct species. The most widespread and well known of these is the short-beaked echidna, which is found all over mainland Australia while the other three extant species are found only in New Guinea. They look rather like long-nosed hedgehogs and behave mostly like anteaters, using their powerful digging claws to tear open ant and termite nests, which they then lap up using a long, sticky tongue. Defensively, the echidnas rely on their spines, and when threatened will either roll into a ball, or rapidly dig themselves a shallow pit and anchor themselves with their claws, leaving only a mound of spines above ground. By a strange coincidence, the platypus and echidna are both subject to the same linguistic quirk, in that the common name of both is their now defunct scientific name. The platypus ("wide-footed") was named for its webbed feet, but the name had already been given to a family of weevils, and the duck-billed platypus is now known as ornithorynchus ("bird-nosed"). Meanwhile, the name echidna ("spiny one") was already taken by a group of moray eels, and so the name was changed to tachyglossus ("swift-tongued"). A baby platypus or echidna is called a puggle.
