Quest For Glory II posted:She's a good character but the other characters all tug their collars endlessly going "HMMM WHAT TO SAY" and then at one point at the bar vincent says "i'd appreciate this advice if it came from an actual woman" to her It's pretty clear once you know the twist, but if you don't, again, I don't see why you would immediately assume trans stuff, or even take that moment particularly impactfully. Vincent largely dismisses Erica's opinions for a variety of reasons, and she's well-known by the group, so it just seemed like a classic "idiots don't listen to sensible character's advice" gag. Either way, I kind of dig it. Erica's existence in the plot is a really interesting one, and she's symbolically important as well as fictively.

the guys in catherine are dicks but it makes sense because you're a big group of idiot friends e: even the calm and collected guy is kind of an idiot since his big inner turmoil is that he still has a crush on your girlfriend even though he never does or says anything about it in the real world unless you break up. it's a problem but hilariously small compared to everybody else's issues in the game Motto fucked around with this message at 02:20 on Aug 13, 2015 |

I kind of wanted a game to unwind with, after getting really stressed out trying to beat Champion's Road in Mario 3D World. For whatever reason Environmental Station Alpha was the game I picked and boy was that not the right choice because these bosses are brutal.

precision posted:i feel like Catherine was a not so subtle "guys are actually pathetic and suck" game I'd argue Catherine's story has slightly more nuanced themes, but yes it does seem to portray all of its male characters as these emasculated dweebs. There's a lot of interesting images and themes in Catherine, and I think it, like all SMT games with good writing, excels in its portrayal of its side characters. You have a wide assortment of motley, crass characters who range the gamut of romantic issues, who don't really factor into the main plot, but become increasingly important as you progress in the game, and your failure or success in saving their lives is a great source of emotional investment in the story. The reason I like SMT games so much is because of the detail and attention paid to side characters and supplemental dialog. It's the truth!

No they're all on the map like most Tales games. Apparently the camera is kind of iffy because there's no cutaway to a separate battle screen, you just fight them where they are and it's the first time Bamco has tried that.

No idea but that's been true of pretty much every Tales game, at least on the default difficulty, so I wouldn't put any money on it changing.

Finished Catherine, it was a good ride. I don't really get the context of the stabby dream and subsequent nightmare it didn't really seem to fit the game's overall explanation. I guess they just needed to crazy it up to make the player that much more interested in the game's core plot twist.

I finished MGS3. Killing The Boss felt horrible, and now I'm sitting here imagining a version of the Big Boss arc where she was the player character instead of 60's-snake. (Yes, I know that could never have happened because of the first two Metal Gear games, let me have this fantasy.) It also proves that Hideo Kojima can write women correctly, he simply chooses not to. And now, because I don't have a PSP or a PS3 to play MGS4 or Peace Walker on, all I can do is wait for The Phantom Pain. On that note, take a moment to imagine The Boss with one eye, a wrinkled face, and a cyborg super arm, sitting in the back of a helicopter and listening to Love Will Tear Us Apart while watching the sunset over Mother Base.

I'm fine with most of them too. The foruth wall breaking, the anachronisms, the goofy recurring lines, Ocelot. But every game has that one love interest character and her writing, direction, and body language are always just so hypersexual and it skeezes me out pretty bad. I just sit there during each one of Those Scenes thinking "Literally no woman is like this outside of your imagination dude." I'm really hoping the fact that Snake is old as gently caress in MGS5 means there will be less of this. e: the best gag in the whole game was looking in your facepaint screen and going "Why the hell do I have a Raiden mask? He hasn't even been born!" and then having a very specific reason for it later. Cyberbird fucked around with this message at 12:39 on Aug 13, 2015 |

I think the worst example of Kojima writing women was in MGS4, the end of Meryl's arc. That was a "I cannot believe this is really happening" moment, and it was really bad, no matter how many layers of irony or trolling went into it.. I heard that one of the side games adds a bunch of retcons to the Boss' characterization, which I guess makes sense considering the nonsense Big Boss spouts in MGS4 and how none of it has anything to do with what actually happened in MGS3. It's a shame, because I thought she was a really good character and didn't need to have more convoluted nonsense added to her motivations.

I've always seen it as Hideo loving loving movies and creating characters to be essentially movie tropes. Meryl: Strong woman falls in love with quirky hero with no sensible redeeming features, because he's the everyman hero. For a recent example, see Ant Man

Cyberbird posted:Every time I have even a small criticism of these games someone says something like this. Sorry I didn't enjoy the gleeful indulgence of straight boy fanservice? This is a really lame evasion. 3 is a love letter to old spy stories (which should be obvious if you talked to zero like at all) and Eva is a classic honey trap. Every time she uses her sexuality (in a way that you, personally, have decided is "literally no woman is like this") it's to distract from something. "I need to do some real crazy super triple cross bullshit for the chinese philosophers that involves backstabbing: the greatest soldier that ever lived, her disciples, a pyscho that shoots lighting and is powerful enough to take over the USSR, and the american intelligence community all at once? Better get in good with this old idiot that's making an idiot rocket tank", "Oh this loving virgin i'm messing with is still asking questions after I saved his life, better show him that i'm wearing the a swimsuit under this onesie", "Ugh this idiot virgin is still following me around, better pretend we're gonna do it and then drug him." A character being titillating to a segment of the population that is different than you doesn't make it bad. Eva serves an important purpose in that story, in fact the entire last half hinges on her and her actions. It works because everyone she interacts is either an idiot (Big Boss), doing some related super triple cross bullshit (The Boss), or completely dismissive to women generally (Volgin). As a spy literally trained from birth, she's adept at using any advantage she can get to manipulate situations to her benefit.
