That song is loving beautiful. I mean I love me the main Halo theme too, Marty O'Donnel rules as a composer, but ODST really let him stretch and try new things and it worked.

Their biggest problem was calling it Halo: ODST. What a terrible marketing idea. Only hardcore fan-nerds know what that means.
I'm confident if they'd called it Halo: Noir or Dark Halo or Halo: Nightfall it would have sold 10x as many copies.

ODST's biggest problem was that it was mostly dull blundering around a samey-looking city in the middle of the night with occasional interludes of blundering around the samey-looking city in the day. It's good-looking and good-sounding but the game plays like an even slower Halo 3.

That was where you first encounter the flood (343 guilty spark is the level you're talking about), and was designed to give you a safe playground to learn how the flood fight :eng101:

After that as another goon said you start running into flood and elite groups at the same time, and the three-way battles were actually super interesting compared to "everybody vs you" in most FPS games. That's something we don't really see outside of Doom, monster infighting. You can really take advantage of it in Halo, even more than Doom because they don't have to shoot each other first to trigger it.

The safe playground was boring as gently caress and the Flood were boring as gently caress. Who thought that was a good idea.

Looking it up, I made it at least to Two Betrayals, maybe early to the one after it.

My biggest issue with the flood introduction map is that you have a cool and unique jungle environment you wander through for 30 seconds and then you go back to generic future ruins.

I've never beaten any Halo game. Farthest I ever got was in the first one, and even there I generally stopped at the first Flood level; I'm not 100% sure why, since the Flood didn't actually bother me all that much (certainly nowhere near as much as it appears to bother others in here).

This is in contrast to my brother and father who co-oped the games regularly... even though my brother was, like, three when the first Halo was new and fascinating. He used to call it "Guys". The Elites were "dinosaurs". It was almost adorable enough to stop me from worrying about how my brother was playing an M-rated game at 3. (At least Halo is a pretty tame M-rated game... poo poo, I recall print ads for the game giving it an ESRB rating of T prior to its release.)

In high school sometimes after AP tests or whatever they'd let us play games, but the teacher said we could only bring in games that were rated E or T.

Halo was so loving popular that we actually went through the effort of printing a photoshopped image of the cover to the game with a T symbol shopped in, then slipped that in the game case and gave it to the teacher, so he said it was okay.

There wasn't much internet back then so we got away with playing halo in class for a solid month until he found out and somebody got busted.

I wouldn't be surprised if the multiplayer was the only reason it was rated M.

I've always wanted to play the Halo games because they look pretty fun, but I really struggle playing shooters on console. Not in an elitist "PC keyboard/mouse master race" way, I just really suck at aiming with thumbsticks. So I've been waiting to see if the whole series will come out on PC so I can play them straight through. Or at least just 3, ODST, and Reach. I really hope they do it eventually.

I'm pretty sure Halo got an instant M because it had player-caused blood splatter decals. The original Halo didn't even go online, it was all LAN play.

Yeah, but the ESRB is usually fine with killing aliens, even if there's blood. Killing humans with blood is usually where they draw the line.

Also, I forgot about the zombies. I've actually never played it, just watched my brother. That could be it too.

Thing is, Halo on a mouse just feels... wrong. Play Halo 1 or 2 on pc is certainly do-able, but it always felt wrong to me. Off in some minor way that's hard to describe.

But its because the entire game was designed from the ground up to be a console shooter, and that's why it was such a great success. Console shooters before that were just ports of games like Unreal Tournament or Half-Life and they felt awkward on sticks, even things designed for console like Goldeneye or Timesplitters struggled with the controls. (Although as silly as the dual-controller goldeneye was, it worked pretty similar to halo)

But Halo specifically gave you things like floaty gravity and slow turning and a really really slow TTK in order to make console feel natural. Its like the anti-quake, although funny enough I love both Halo and Quake. They're both really great at doing what they wanted to, which was two completely different approaches to an FPS.

Yeah the original Cortana was a great design, and each iteration has very very obviously sexualized her more and more.

Whats real sad is when the developers have to come up with some bullshit "well she's adapting to John's sexuality" nonsense excuse, like "oh well you see parsec actually makes sense in this context because the kessel run was near a black hole..." loving come off it, you just wanted big tits and you knew big tits would sell to the call of duty crowd.

As if big-boobs Cortana wasn't enough, killing cortana in halo 4 destroyed pretty much all of my goodwill for the series. 343 is so loving stupid.

It really is ridiculous comparing Halo 1 cortana to Halo 4 cortana.

In the first game she looked like a TRON character made of code, while in the 3rd game and especially the 4th she's just a girl wearing a bikini made out of code.

I only played 1 (part of it), and 3 (liked that one). Just for the record I think Cortana's design in 3 is better. Being naked doesn't count if you're blue, like Mystique in the X-Men movies. I don't see the big deal, she's blue. Hell, Doctor Manhattan's blue dong is a celebrated piece of history. Rightfully so.

Leela will always be twice the character Cortana was, which is a feat considering A: she doesn't actually physically appear, and B: She appears in maybe half of one game as compared to Cortana co-starring all of four.

They hosed it up. Its not NEARLY as bad as Halo 4 which is straight up pornography, but its definitely different than the original. She looks somewhere between Halo 2 and Halo 3 Cortana, hair is much longer than the original and the body shape is more defined.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRYccDiXDOE

Luckily the Halo HD remakes let you swap between classic and HD graphics literally on-the-fly (which is loving amazing and took tons of work, and is what sold me on buying the remaster) so you can just watch the old cutscene and then play in modern graphics. :)

Another thing they did was when they re-did Keyes, they massively changed his appearance. It bothered me at first but the look grew on me and now I'm cool with it. He looks much younger.

Here, since we're talking about it so much:

Look at how drastic those changes are. Halo 1 is a purple tomboy girl from Tron. Halo 4 is a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition model with painted on clothes.

4's face does look less uncanny valley than 3, but 1 still looks good.

What I remember reading is that Cortana's original design was based of off of Nefertiti, whereas the Halo 4 design is based off some model.

I kinda liked the slower pace of wondering around the city. It was nice change of pace from constantly rushing towards the next destination like a lot of other modern FPS games do.

Halo was supposed to be an RTS game like Myth -- essentially, it was supposed to be Halo Wars.

Alex Seropian came out and said that Halo was never intended to actually be related to Marathon outside of the easter egg stuff like the Marathon emblem being the UNSC emblem, or plot similarities like Durandal and Cortana undergoing the same "rampancy." The gameplay is not similar, really, outside of them both being FPS games.

I still like to imagine that Pathways Darkness, Marathon and Halo as being tied together. It has a sorta large, mythic (not Myth-ic, though I love it dearly) feel to it.
