They're just nicknames. There are really prominent players in football who I could see (and probably have) signed their nickname instead of their birth name. Most people have heard of the football player "The Fridge" but I would guess most people who weren't alive to see him play wouldn't know who William Perry is.

At this point it's an intrinsic part of ~gamer culture~ but I could see that changing in the future or atleast moving in a direction of using real names to promote individuals as esports become more mainstream and players want to sell their brand beyond their online persona e: alternatively one could roll like fatal one thank you

Some teams used real names from time to time back in the day. Like you saw SK|Ingemarsson or SK|Christensen instead of Potti and HeatoN. Maybe it was tournament specific though, I can't really remember that far back.

I don't remember that being an enforced rule. I always thought it was just the players coming to an understanding of trying to look slightly more professional. Not to mention that once they started doing that tons of other players started doing it as well.
