Can someone recommend me something like those albums by a different artist / group (I can always come back to Tribe or Mos Def later, and probably will)? You can call it either. Hip-hop is maybe more accurate if you're a pedantic rear end in a top hat like me. Off the top of my head you would probably like these: Black Star - Mos Def and Talib Kweli are Black Star Talib Kweli - Quality Common - Be De la Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising Digable Planets - Blowout Comb The Roots - Things Fall Apart

'Octopus' and 'Power and the Glory' are amazing albums, though pretty much everything they did before they got poppy is really good (pre-1977). Of course there's Yes and Jethro Tull, but those are obvious. Also check out Happy the Man. There's tons of 'em, as you know, so good luck. Are you into heavy metal, because there are a number of great prog metal bands out there if so.

Hi thread, I don't know what the odds are of getting this answered here, but any chance someone can recommend some Québécois music to me? I've been listening to Coeur de pirate and Whitehorse's french album Éphémère sans repère lately and love it, it's improving my rusty language skills and it's amazing music as well. I'm looking for folk/indie/acoustic rock/pop style stuff, no rap or metal. My favourite ones from those artists: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vENrP5x9kzw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S79hS71v0Hg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urpjInmrnrM Thanks in advance!!

Their first two albums, Trompe L'oeil and Le Compte Complet are a lot of fun. Their most recognizable song Montreal -40C is pretty indicative of their early sound. I haven't listened to their later two albums in a long time, but I remember them being less lighthearted and almost prog-rock at times.

This is a weird request: I want to broaden my knowledge of influential world music. Albums from non-English speaking countries that made an impact on Western music. Examples of albums/musicians that I've loved: Os Mutantes (first album) "Aguas de Marco" by Elis Regina "Bonnie & Clyde" by Serge Gainsbourg & Brigitte Bardot "Aquarela do Brasil". I know I'm just dipping a toe in waters, and my request is vague, but I'd appreciate any help. I'm open to any genres besides Heavy Metal.

Red Suit posted:Hey I don't know much about rap, can anyone help me find stuff like what this guy? Guess it depends on specifically what you looking for. The production's gonna be hard to match, but in terms of rapping there's tons of similar stuff. Check out Sway's Freestyles/5 Fingers of Death-it's pretty much dudes just going on his morning show and freestyling over different beats he plays. Here's one that's fairly recent that had King Los. Sway throws words out that he has to rhyme constantly, it's pretty nice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbimBJJiGUA You may wanna also check out the BET Cyphers (or just rap cyphers in general). In terms of dudes who just put out that kinda style generally, Apathy comes to mind (really, any of the demigodz affiliates). You'd probably dig all the Slaughterhouse dudes as well. Like dudes like Kendrick and Lupe can rap better than pretty much anyone but their albums are usually a bit more "high concept". I'd recommend just going through the Sway freestyle stuff (there's a whole channel/playlist on youtube) and maybe check the BET cyphers, and note who you like best and look out for their solo stuff. Also in general you're gonna wanna look for stuff labeled as mixtapes over album releases in general when you do-it's not always the case but dudes tend to rap a bit harder on the mixtape stuff. You got more questions or wanna know about specific dudes feel free to ask in the rap thread.
