A ship that never left harbor is a fantastic Palin metaphor.

Or maybe a ship that never left the harbor, saw a supercar on shore one time, and spent the rest of it's life stuck on the beach making vroom vroom noises, surrounded by a crowd of dudes in lamborghini shoes and hats looking less and less excited by the hour.

CNN did some reprehensible story about how no one was shot at any screenings.

Was there ever a definitive reason given for some theaters increasing security? I can see it either way. Yeah America is that afraid of black people but at the same time we just had a spree killing target them and theater shootings are back in the news. I was afraid something would happen and i wasnt remotely thinking of BLACK ON BLACK.

And yet it manages to be slightly less offensive than the essential omission of two decades of pop culture history and radical social acceptance shift that NBC did when they tried to say that the Straight Outta Compton movie has brought gangsta rap main stream.

Of course it may have been that they marched a black guy with a doctorate in sociology to do it.

The only time I was exposed (a lot) to NWA and Straight Outta Compton was when I was a freshman at NCSU. My roommate had three cassette tapes he played (I had gotten a CD player that Christmas so I was wearing headphones and listening to other stuff as much as possible) and the weird thing is that this guy was from the mountains of NC.

His three tapes that he played non-stop: NWA: SOC, Milli Vanilli (Blame it on the Rain?), and the very first Beatles crap (Love, Love Me Do, etc.)

He was the whitest, most racist, joined the Army and then his girlfriend for life left him immediately dude I ever met. In fact, she talked him into leaving school to join the Army.

I will never, ever be able to reconcile this experience with the rest of my life.

To this day, I still think a lot of that NWA record and some Easy-E solo stuff was the most enlightening material I was exposed to in university. I'd go see this movie if I thought it had any bearing on the reality of NWA, but I doubt it so much I'll wait until some people who actually know this history weigh in and give it up or down. I am interested in it, but I don't want to just watch a weird propaganda film. Where NWA is concerned, I'd rather be educated than entertained.

quote:

This song brings a whole new meaning to “touchy-feely.”

Actress-turned-pop singer Hailee Steinfeld has released the video for her new single, called “Love Myself,” in which the 18-year-old makes it completely clear her personal needs can be satisfied by her, and her only.

In the four-minute spot, Steinfeld can be seen sporting a black onesie with the words “self service” displayed boldly across her chest as she sings about masturbation.

“I’m gonna touch the pain away…Scream my own name,” she sings.

Steinfeld started her career in entertainment as a child film actor, earning an Academy Award nomination for her supporting role in 2010s True Grit, and crossed over into the music industry this past year.

“It is ultimately about taking care of and indulging yourself. Though it’s nice to have someone provide for you, whether that be emotionally, or physically, or with material things. This song really represents the power in providing for yourself,” Steinfeld told Ryan Seacrest of the song’s meaning in August.

It wouldn't be nearly as funny if the comments didn't take it as a sign the apocalypse is at hand:

Oh Matt

quote:

What do you think about women possibly serving in the Army Rangers?
I can tell you that I think these women should be commended for the accomplishment. But I'm also not afraid to say that I don't think women should be in the Army Rangers or serving in combat positions at all. We have seen an enormous push to impose political correctness and "progressive philosophies" on the military during this administration, and I fail to see how any of it -- women in combat, repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell, etc -- could be viewed as a step towards helping the military in its primary objective: killing bad guys. I fear, on the contrary, that the opposite is happening.

First of all, knowing what we know about how the administration has imposed itself on the military, it's pretty hard to believe that there wasn't bureaucratic pressure put on the army throughout this process. You might call that cynical, but I think that only proves you haven't been paying attention. I'm not saying the standards were lowered for these women -- I don't know if they were or not -- but they were, unlike other candidates, politically significant. Again, I don't see how introducing politics to Ranger School could possibly make anything better.

Second, I'm a big believer in the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" strategy. Were the Army Rangers less effective at their jobs because they were comprised only of men? Would anyone make such an argument? If not, then why are we tinkering with the formula? Why conduct social experiments in an environment where lives are at risk? Seems to me that the Rangers, and combat troops across the military, have been pretty damned awesome at accomplishing their missions. I don't think that the lack of gender diversity ever caused even one single failure on the battlefield.

Third, men have an instinct to protect women. This is good. The whole "women and children off the sinking ship first" thing. Feminists might have a problem with it, but I doubt any of them would give up their place at the front of the evacuation line just to make that point. In any case, out on the battlefield, men cannot afford this special treatment to women. They won't be able to compromise the mission for the sake of their chivalrous impulses. I don't think this is a good mentality to foster in men, and it certainly isn't fair to them. It simply isn't right to put them in the position of having to choose between protecting and honoring women, as they are naturally inclined to do, and completing the mission.

Fourth, speaking of unfair, there are realities like muscle mass to contend with. Women are generally weaker not because they are inferior, but because they are built differently. Are women generally as capable of lifting up a 250 pound injured man and carrying him 300 yards to safety under heavy enemy fire? If not, again, do we think it's a good idea to put people in danger just to "break the glass ceiling?" Should the military even care at all about breaking glass ceilings -- or should they be more concerned about breaking the enemy?

Fifth, unfortunately, if we are going to be equal and fair, that means women will have to be signed up for the draft. I don't want this to happen, but if we're pretending that men and women are equally suited for combat, it must happen. Maybe that's what it will take for us to finally stop injecting liberal social theory into the military. Maybe when our 19-year-old daughters are being conscripted to go fight in a foreign desert somewhere, we'll all finally look around and say, "hmmm, this is a little crazy, isn't it?"
As I said, I congratulate these women for what they have personally achieved. And I have no doubt that they are motivated by love of country. However, this is the result of a political decision on the part of bureaucrats, not a strategic decision made by actual military leaders, and for that reason it's hard for me to celebrate it. If there's ANY part of our society that should be completely, totally, and utterly free of political correctness, it should be the military.[

[Quote]My husband is an infantryman in the army. I'm against women in as infantry and rangers because women are naturally not programmed like men are. Can women kick rear end? Heck yeah! But does a man have a better chance being able to carry my husband with full gear (280+ lbs) out of a combat zone? Yes! Plus, it's not healthy for women. They go on missions and will be gone for weeks at a time with no showers. My husband packs baby wipes with him. That's his shower. Women have lady parts that have to be cared for. And face it, women are emotional and hormonal. I fully support women going out and raising hell but not when it comes to our military and our troops. And please done waste our tax money and military resources to prove that you are just as tough as a man.

It's also possible they looked at that picture and literally didn't see her.

Women have long hair and wear form fitting clothing after all.

I have a skinny guy friend with well tended waist length hair and a beard ... that he occasionally gets mistaken for a woman from behind illustrates that some members of society are not using all the available cues to determine gender when looking at someone. His bodily proportions are pretty clearly male and he's over six foot but he still gets the occasional , "can I help you miss?" From clerks coming up behind him.

Yup. You have no idea how bafflingly dumb people can be about that sort of thing. One very important thing about fighting in general is that skill is way more important than anything else. Best sparring partner I ever had was a woman because she was way, way better at fighting than I could ever be. I found that out when she kicked my rear end pretty easily. "Women can't fight" is utter nonsense.

The highest ranked sword person in the world, last I heard, is actually a woman. That's overall. Total. She's literally the best human alive at sword play.
