Maybe, but there are an awful lot of devs out there who leave Amazon on very short notice - quickly enough that they're still on the hook to pay back their signing money. A <1yr stint as an Amazon employee right out of college on a resume doesn't even raise eyebrows.
Oh yeah definitely, it varies a lot depending on team. I remember a senior SDE from a related team getting upset that a question I asked him kept him past 5:30 (he had recently immigrated from France, which likely had something to do with it).

Anyway this kind of negative attention is good. People being more hesitant to take jobs there might force Amazon to improve their benefits and work culture. I read /r/cscareerquestions and there's definitely a common sentiment that you should be careful about accepting work at Amazon because of the potential to get overworked.

*21-honk salute* :(

quote:

Robert Thielke, one of the most recognizable faces in Seattle television advertising, has died.

The cause was cancer, friends said. Thielke was 50.

In the 1990s, Thielke became the face of Vern Fonk Insurance, the high-risk and DUI insurer known for late-night ads. Over the next two decades, he became one of the most recognizable faces on Northwest television – as much as car smashing salesman Dick Balch in the 1970s or appliance pitchman Jack Roberts in the 1980s.

One of Thielke’s first ads was a Forrest Gump parody. There was the Napoleon Dynamite one, the Back to The Future parody, the one modeled after Sham Wow, and Vern Fonk vision at a bikini barista stand where Thielke served customers in a pink top.

Don’t forget the Austin Powers parody, the Star Wars and Sopranos spoofs, the hair removal ad, the scary clown spot, the crash test dummies parody, or the annual holiday message.

And then there was the country dance spot that’s been viewed more than 345,000 times on YouTube. The catch phrase in that ad, Shapoopi, adorned T-shirts sold on the Vern Fonk website.

Thousands of people honked when they drove by Vern Fonk, as Thielke instructed at the end of their ads.

Though many thought he was, Thielke wasn’t the man behind the insurance company. Vern Fonk, which also has offices in Oregon, started in 1952 and the namesake died at age 75 in May 2007.

But Thielke, who worked during the day as a company office manager in Everett, quickly became the most recognizable face.

"It basically started out, I was just being goofy, silly in the office all the time," Thielke, who began as an insurance agent in 1989, told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer in 2007. "Vern says, 'Hey, I want you to go do some TV ads.' "

The spots cost between $3,000 and $5,000 – a moderate cost for TV ads – and strongly resonated with Vern Fonk’s target audience of 18-34-year-olds, according to the P-I story.

Thielke got help from his brother, Joel, an actor in California who would come to help film the commercials. Thielke told the P-I he wouldn’t make an ad he wouldn’t show his kids, and had focus groups of family and friends before hitting the late night airwaves.

“I just started thinking of weird, bizarre things that are relevant to society, and make fun of it or parody it," Thielke told the newspaper in 2007. "And I just did a couple of them, and the phones started ringing off the hook."

I see bikes riding along the I-5 shoulder every two or three weeks or so. Not within any of the big cities, but in the suburban areas it's not that rare.

Did Oregon legalize lane splitting recently? I've seen a lot of motorcycles using the shoulders to pass in rush hour lately.

Around here, the freeway shoulder is probably the safest bike path between cities, since the shoulder is basically an entire lane of paved width, whereas the backroads have an inch of paved shoulder at best and people are still blasting through at 70.

Taking the lane on a bike on a motherfucking freeway, though, should not be a "get off with a warning" offense.

It doesn't really bother me, I'd hate to have to handle stop and go traffic on an 800lb Harley turd too, just curious because it seemed to start occuring out of nowhere.

I've seen motorcycles drive between lanes since I was a child, and I'm sure it was happening before then.

I don't think it's necessarily a Californian thing, just an advantage people take when available. Used to bother me until I realized it was more "why not me???" than "whatta idiot".

A lot of people in north central washington are going to lose their homes over the next few days; entire towns are being evacuated right now and there's not nearly enough firefighters or equipment to get things under control. Predicted winds of 35-50 MPH for thursday/friday and no rain any time soon. Some of the coolest people I know are from the Methow valley, this is just brutal :sigh:

NEWT THE MOON

Was out in Colville last weekend. They were surrounded on both ends of the valley by fires in Addy and Kettle Falls. The whole valley is pretty smokey all the way down to Chewelah and there's a general snow of ash in the air at all times. Luckily the farms in the middle are still well watered and green and the fires are staying on the west side. There were only a few homes in Addy lost, but there's plenty of people under stage 2-3 evacuation. Colville lost power and even 911 service for about a day there, which was eerie.

Family on the north side of the border in Midway BC is going through a series of fire refugees staying in their camper while they figure out what they're doing.

I like the $15/hour wage, with a few conditions.
1) Phase in over 3-5 years, then tie to inflation.
2) Tipping exemption. I tip 20% normally, $15/hour + tips is crazy high money. Maybe an exemption that says you can be paid $10/hour and then get tips?(tips must at least make up the difference to $15) Not sure, but its a bit extreme for restaurants.
3) I want the range where salary kicks in to be doubled. Otherwise you will see an even larger increase in bullshit managerial positions paying the same as minimum wage.
4) Probably some considerations for smaller businesses.

$15 gross per hour in Seattle is a bare-survival wage.

Ah- Smug Mode.

My family and I like to drive over the pass to Orondo/Wenatchee/Cashmere/Peshastin/Leavenworth every September to load up on freshly picked apples, fresh cider, etc- we make a full day out of it. I am not sure we will be able to do it this year if these fires aren't under control. And if/when we do it will be sad to see all the devastation. There are still parts of Blewett Pass that are blackened from the last major fire outbreak a few years ago. Nature will make a comeback, but people who lose homes and businesses might not. Very sad.
