Reminds me of Asimov's short story "The Dead Past"
http://www.5novels.com/ScienceFiction/Asimov41/27323.html

quote:

"Too late," said Nimmo, shrugging. "They've had better than a day. There's been time for the word to spread. My outfits will have called any number of physicists to check my data before going on with it and they'll call one another to pass on the news. Once scientists put neutrinics and pseudo-gravities together, home chronoscopy becomes obvious. Before the week is out, five hundred people will know how to build a small chronoscope and how will you catch them all?" His plum cheeks sagged. "I suppose there's no way of putting the mushroom cloud back into that nice, shiny uranium sphere."

Araman stood up. "We'll try, Potterley, but I agree with Nimmo. It's too late. What kind of a world we'll have from now on, I don't know, I can't tell, but the world we know has been destroyed completely. Until now, every custom, every habit, every tiniest way of life has always taken a certain amount of privacy for granted, but that's all gone now."

He saluted each of the three with elaborate formality.

"You have created a new world among the three of you. I congratulate you. Happy goldfish bowl to you, to me, to everyone, and may each of you fry in hell forever. Arrest rescinded."

Worm Farming is part of "Other livestock farming" in this new bill

quote:

During Parliament's Question Time yesterday, Labour MP Sue Moroney asked Mr Woodhouse how worm farming was more dangerous than cattle farming, when more than one-third of New Zealand's workplace deaths in the past 5 years had happened in the agricultural sector.

"The member does trivialise the 11 deaths in the category of other livestock farming, of which worm farming is one. There were 11 people killed at work, and more than 1,000 serious injuries," Mr Woodhouse responded.

What I want to know is how many workplace deaths have occurred on Worm Farms, or is Woodhouse just being loving obtuse?

edit: Or has National just based their research on a certain internet video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmu5sRIizdw

Yeah the problem is that the categories were drawn up and the statistics were massaged to be as beneficial as it could be for the dairy farms.

Nobody hates dairy farmers themselves, but as a country we have elevated dairy farming into a Too Big To Fail industry, and as a result consistently legislate to avoid economic pressures on that sector at a massive cost to our environment due to our size, and at a significant distortion to our domestic markets. When that industry is 'threatened' our solution is to provide it more ability to literally poison the land rather than invest in diversifying our agriculture so that a single country not wanting as much milk as usual doesn't tank our economy.

Things may come to those who wait...but only the things left by those who hustle.

I like dairy farmers and the way the govt makes sure they're kept afloat because (according to the mortgage broker I spoke with yesterday) it means that mortgage rates are likely to continue to drop for a wee bit and if I wait till after the next OCR adjustment I could be looking at paying even less than 4.6% interest
