Finally got the hang of Rainmaker. I think part of my initial trouble was due to straying from my trusty Krak-On Roller. I just can't seem to git gud with any other weapons. Aerospray can be a nice change of pace sometimes, depending on the map. I've also had a few good matches with Splatling and Dual Squelcher on Tower Control, but I always have to go back to the Krak. Kraken form is just so useful in all ranked modes, whether it's controlling space in Splatzones or making a path in Rainmaker.

I do want to try some brushes and chargers, but I'm weary of doing so in ranked games.

drat I wish I could record the map screen. It's astounding how many people seem to try and AVOID going to the rainmaker

Edit: also the extremely common player that snatches up the rainmaker, but then totally ignores the extremely obvious ink trail leading straight to the goal and instead goes on some Rambo bullshit.

Rainmaker has clicked more with me over the past day or two as well. Switching from the Ranged Blaster to the Luna Blaster has helped a shitload with that, to be honest. The nature of Rainmaker means that there are generally more close-quarters skirmishes going on, and the Ranged Blaster proved too unwieldy to really get any work done - you have to stay a safe distance BEHIND your Rainmaker carrier in order to be effective, and generally you don’t want that kid up front getting the full attention. That being said, the fact that the Ink Wall blocks a huge chunk of the Rainmaker tornado can be extraordinarily useful on many maps.

Working up from B- to A- has helped a lot as well, people are WAY more coordinated and I can generally trust teammates to move as a group and push with the Rainmaker.

Yeah, I'm getting close to A- myself, and the teamwork difference even in B+ from B is pretty noticeable. I'm sure the increased Rainmaker experience helps, too.

I just reached S rank, but I feel kinda bad about it because my team didn't play fair in Walleye warehouse. As soon as we got the lead, one guy just took the rainmaker and went into hiding and stalled for time. It worked, since the game didn't consider it retreating when he went to the upper platforms in the side area.

You could say that it was the opposing team's fault for being so bad, but come on, that poo poo isn't fun for anyone. If your team is that much better, have the courtesy to go for a knockout. At least this kind of bad stalling playstyle isn't very common from what I've seen.

Don't need a holster if you never stop shooting.

My brother and I have a pretty decent strategy for rainmaker when we're squadding. We both use weapons with Kraken, and don't really go for the rainmaker that hard in the opening skirmish. Once we both have special charged, though, we go for the grab, and if one of us gets it, the other leads as far as they can before they pop the kraken and takes a beeline toward the pedestal while the carrier squids behind him. It usually takes the other team by surprise and has had a good success rate, at least on the couple of maps that we attempted.

I hate that stalling is a valid tactic, but I've only ever seen someone do it for an extended period on Saltspray. I really wish they'd patch it so the timer counts down very quickly if you're in that area of the map, though.

Octobrush is pretty good sometimes the enemy team clusters enough while popping the bubble that I get triple kills, I can then lay down an ink path for the rainmaker to completely ignore.

Just this morning some other dude and I broke the shield. I then ran past the rainmaker and killed the two bad guys. Then bushed a path up the ramp then krakened and killed the other two guys near the goal, then coated the goal with ink. I glance down at my map and see my path from the rainmaker all the way to the goal totally intact. While inking the area some more and singlehandedly holding off the two guys that respawned I glance down again, wondering why the hell we havent won yet.

The guy I was with picked up the rainmaker all right. He then began using it to forge his own loving path through the sea of bad ink. gently caress you.

The Great Twist
I never thought a game about painting people with ink as a squidgirl would get me to buy a console, but here we are.

I'm level 11 now and have a few questions. Should I try out ranked and the new game modes now, or will I be thrown up against teams of level 50's with minmaxed gear and basically be a team burden?

With the splatfest thing coming up, do I have to do anything special to get into it on the 28th or when I log in will it just happen?

You really shouldn't worry about level at all. A lot of what are considered the strongest weapons are unlocked really early (seriously you probably already have most of them. tentatek, krak-on roller, .56 gal, slosher, etc) and secondary abilities on gear provide a negligible benefit. Plus, keep in mind that once you reach level 20 you've basically unlocked everything aside from a few pieces of gear.

I'd say you could still wait a bit before jumping in on Ranked, you won't get paired against level 50s, but you will probably face people on the higher teens or 20s, though if you feel like you're a murder machine and know the maps in the rotation then you could go for it.

In a few days they'll announce the splatfest in-game, at which point you'll have to walk over to where you can vote, right next to the gun store, and once you cast your vote you'll get a t-shirt and join the splatfest when it starts. During hte splatfest you'll automatically wear the t-shirt of the team you choose. If you don't vote before the splatfest starts it'll simply take you to a screen so you can vote and join in on the splating.

There is a T-shirt you get when you register in the plaza. A voting booth of sorts will pop up a few days prior. I'm not sure what happens if you login during Splatfest without having registered. I would be surprised if you get locked out, though.

As for Ranked, I would wait until Splatzones is the mode. I think it's the closest to Turf War, so it should be a more natural learning curve.

Ranked puts you against players with (theoretically) equal skill level as you, so even if they are fully kitted out they'll be awful players.

You need to visit the booth, choose a side, and wear the clothes to play in the Splatfest playlist. You can pick up the shirt early to work on subperks if you wish but it's not necessary.

Splat zones is more or less the easiest ranked game mode, so if you want to start slow, you could wait until that comes up in the rotation.

Or just hop in and have fun. There are horrible dumbasses even among the higher ranking players, so you really shouldn't worry about dragging your team down due to inexperience.

The worst thing in the world, is when you see someone about to land from a super jump, prime up to kill them, then die as they turn around, and unload an entire aerospray clip into your face. And then the kill cam pans to an empty spot just in time to see them land because they hadn't even finished super jumping on your end when you died.

I don't think i have an internet connection capable of playing A ranked.

Honestly, as far as Camp Triggerfish goes, forsaking your team and going it alone is almost always the best choice. Almost every single team i've been on in that map has had everyone else immediately trying to go through the heavily contested middle path of the map with the rainmaker.

By comparison, I stole the rainmaker at the start of a match last night after the enemy team popped the bubble, ran left, and with a small amount of help from a cool bro squid went straight to the goal. Match lasted maybe 20 seconds, I fired one shot in the whole match.

Also i've been hit by an unusually large amounts of collision bops off the side of the map from the enemy team today. Just jumping or running into me has shunted me off the side more than I have been splatted today.
