Its definitely hard to really articulate why Fringe was great without major spoilers, but what I can say is it was a show that never held back. It wasn't afraid to dive headfirst into stuff that other shows just hint at or nibble around the edges of.

This is me pretty much. Fringe is X-Files where they're not afraid to go batshit insane, yet actually know how to write an arc and move the plot forward. I watched the first episode and stopped watching and thought it was a cheesy episode of the x-files. It was a cheesy episode of the Xfiles, but I kept hearing good things about it, watched the first season when I had nothing else to watch and then got hooked. They're different shows - X-Files has a mythos and gravity, and Fringe has a truckload of drugs and an actual plan beyond first season.

Did anyone mention that X-Files Files is back from hiatus?  First episode he's back with Rhea Butcher, who is objectively amazing, taking about Sanguinarium, and the newest one is also great. I love this podcast so much.

Fringe is all the science stuff from X-Files and Supernatural is all the well .. supernatural stuff (and humour) from X-Files. You can definitely tell that both shows have people that worked on X-Files though.

Not top tier TV, but decent. The most impressive thing about it now is that it's still watchable and entertaining after ten loving seasons.

Supernatural has been on my list for ages but I've never quite gotten around to watching it. I think it's the length of it that puts me off - sure, The X-Files and SG1 were both pretty long series as well, but I started them after they'd finished and I knew I was working towards a definite ending. I'm pretty sure the producers of Supernatural have said they're fully prepared to keep it going for ten more seasons if they're not cancelled first. Personally, I sometimes wonder if they're trying make it to 12 so they can beat Smallville for episodes, then wind it up.

The actors pretty much want to do it forever, and it's still a ratings juggernaut for CW, so there's no end in sight. It gets repetitive in the past few years, as they have to keep going back to the brothers drama well for plot and coming up with stakes to raise each season for the arc is getting tougher, but there are still some great moments. It's more like a soap opera now than anything else. The first few years were very procedural in a good way, laying out the "rules" of the universe in an almost scientific way, and a great mix of MOTW and mytharc episodes. I still enjoy where they just spend an episode hunting a regular ghost. It's become pretty much a show about Heaven, Hell, Demons and Angels but that wasn't at all the focus of the early seasons which were more about ghosts and a larger variety of supernatural monsters. I never thought of it as being like X-Files before, but now that people mention it, yeah I can totally see it.

Rewatching and back up to season 5. The season 5 plot feels dramatic what with Mulder and Scully losing faith in aliens and all that but it doesn't make much sense at all for them to actually do that. By that point in the series for example they've literally seen Alien Bounty hunters that shape shift. But now one fake alien and one department of defense guy talking some trash and Mulder loses all faith? It's hard to buy. e: Also since they're apparently just bringing back dead characters in the new one with the CSM can I lobby for them bringing back X who is a fuckin badass that they killed off way too early?

I can't remember if it was Season 5 or not, but I distinctly remember Mulder losing his faith at some point when it became potentially clear that all the Alien poo poo he was lapping up as just some Mundane Human poo poo that was being leaked as Alien poo poo. Efb, and hard
