Raccoons (Procyon Lotor) are our favorite backyard friends and live in garbage cans and eat literally everything. They also look adorable and do hilarious things sometimes. After our greetings they brought my attention to a new friend standing in the background. As I looked, out of the darkness stepped Bandito, with Raccoon Medicine. He was sitting under the bird feeder picking up bird seed that had fallen to the ground. goose willis has a new favorite as of 21:04 on Mar 19, 2016 |

He and his wife rehabilitated an orphaned raccoon. When he was grown up, they let him go, but he still came back to visit pretty frequently. The professor and his wife had a bucket outside to catch rainwater to water the plants everyday. Their raccoon would often wash its hands in that bucket when it came to visit. One day, they decided to touch up some paint around their windows, then forgot to put the lid back on the gallon bucket. That night they heard an unholy scream. The raccoon had gone to wash its hands as usual and was dismayed to find that his bucket no longer contained water. He took off back to a stream on their property to wash the paint off. cash crab posted:
This is cool. Oooo. Also, when I lived in Lawrence, KS, around once a year, we'd be driving and pass a tree filled with a bunch of raccoons. I can't find a picture though. My vet clinic actually had a picture of another raccoon tree though. I'm talking, like, at least 10 raccoons all sitting in a tree conversing. Bored has a new favorite as of 20:54 on Aug 22, 2015 |

i live in a country with no racoons so i really don't know much about them but they seem like the cutest things i've ever saw are they like rats in that they lurk around urban areas and feed off garbage? are they domestic animals? are they always as big and fat as in those videos? are they aggressive? they seem like a mixture between the scavenging habits of rats and the personality of a sloth

Mans posted:are they aggressive? If I had been braver, I would have tried to get a better look at the wound and maybe clean it out. But they are wild animals and while this one was super sweet compared to its pushy friend, I don't really wanna push my luck and try to touch it. Especially poking at a wound. Raccoons are fast and I don't want to get bitten. Also, there was the gang of raccoons killing pets and attacking any human that tried to interfere in Olympia,Washington in 2006: http://www.klamathbasincrisis.org/wolves/raccoons091906.htm Mans posted:

I just like the title of this video: Raccoon will wash everything you love https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lkPFdyyMMk I can't understand why the humans are so surprised that the raccoon is kind of destructive, though. Also, the video that is often linked where the dude gets home and his raccoon has remodeled the kitchen cabinets Looks like Willie continued being famous. Look how wrong I am. Mans posted:i live in a country with no racoons so i really don't know much about them but they seem like the cutest things i've ever saw Raccoons are generalized omnivores and have evolved primate level intelligence in order to extract food from their surroundings. This basically makes them perfect for living in urbanized habitats. They don't have opposable thumbs, but their fingers are long, thin and lack webbing. They're dexterous and smart enough to open latches, doors, jars, etc. They're sociable and smart enough that a lot will come up to people to be hand fed. They're not domesticated, so as pets they can be destructive, hard/impossible to train, and may lash out unexpectedly. They have big fluffy fur coats which used to be a big deal in the fur trade. Their primary sense is touch, which is why they get all handsy with everything. Soaking their hands and the object they're examining in water amplifies that sense.

Lonely Virgil posted:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lkPFdyyMMk Oooh, that made me so happy. Anyway, in terms of being aggressive, they tend to be very aggressive when they're not in big city centres, and when they are underweight. Rural raccoons are usually a little bit dumber, as well. A very large male that used to live under my deck with his little raccoon wife* used to do things like tug on my pant leg while I was browsing my phone to ask for either attention or food. It got so bad I had to carry out steins of water to splash on him, which made him look mildly confused ("I thought we were friends??") but didn't deter him until after the female gave birth and he had moseyed off. I'm glad he left because we couldn't get our cat fixed while she was in heat and he used to sit next to the bathroom window, and she thought he was a cat so she'd go into heat every two days or so (she also did the same thing whenever she'd find my roommate's jacket). *: I forgot the word for "mate" but I am keeping this
