We've seen cartoons with Kelly in the '70s, which came way before 1987.

He's the "cartoonist" for the Onion. You don't have to worry about it being serious.

Anyway, for added funny, I love this section from Secret Wars Thors #2.

Background, one of the two top Thors working a particularly baffling murder winds up dead. Ultimate Thor (yes, the Thor from the Ultimate Universe. Who is the top cop Thor and has the nickname Ultimate.) and the other Thor's decided to crack down on the usual leads to figure out who did it.

Now, ordinarily what amounts to two cops holding a suspect and beating information out of them shouldn't be funny. It should be an abuse of power and a twisting of Justice, Law and Order into something it's not.

However if you make the cops Viking Gods armed with magic hammers, and the suspect an Indestructible killer robot, then the image becomes hilarious again.

I will never understand American cartoonists' obsession with slapping labels everrrrrrrrrrrrrywhere. I mean, sure, there are some UK ones just as guilty (FFS, Chris Riddle, cut that poo poo out) but holy gently caress, it's another level in the States, every glance in the political cartoons thread is just wall to wall idiocy.

Even outside of satire people did, same as people advocate use of coal even today. Leaded gasoline has advantages for the motor of your car (knock resistance), that took some time to replicate in unleaded gasoline (and even then it isn't as good). The downside of poisoning the world isn't something that's as much in the mind as the short term consequences to your car. Same today, or we wouldn't have the whole global warming issue.
