By page 58 of last chapter, the Paranatural Krew hadn't even gotten on the train yet. And most of this chapter has been action instead of gonzo-long speeches.

I will take this over that any day of the week.

For now! Wait until they confront whatever's in Jeff. That thing's speeches will make Forge's look like footnotes.

I'm not sure it's actually dragging in comic time, as opposed to just dragging due to the release schedule. I'll definitely need to read through this again once it's over to make sure.

Bad flashbacks to DBZ arcs going on for thirty episodes too long. And then 60, 80, 200 for Bleach, Inuyasha and Naruto.

Chapter 5 of Paranatural is curerently at 42 pages, which is the equivalent of just over two chapters of your standard WSJ manga.

Page 1 was posted on December 30th 2014. That was 33 weeks and some days ago, so at about 2.2 chapters of content, that means that a WSJ manga comes out with content at almost 15 times quicker than Paranatural.

For comparison, the current arc in One Piece, which is just ending and is widely regarded to have dragged on a bit in places, started on the 4th of March 2013. This is 128 weeks. In order for One Piece to be going at the same pace Paranatural is, the Dressrosa arc would have to have started Saturday November 4, 1978. One Piece, in general would have had to have started in 1744. The comparison obviously isn't exactly a fair one, since on dude is just doing this on his own in full colour in his spare time whereas one is a paid, professional artist with a small team of assistants working in black and white.

So I'm willing to cut the pacing a little slack in this arc, and I am sure on a re-read it will be much brisker and fun. It's still a bitch right now though...

Anime isn't much better, honestly. The whole industry is propped up on people who will willingly work 100-hour weeks for poo poo pay just for the privilege of creating something.

Basically, everyone should watch Shirobako, an anime about making anime. And then realize that it is a very idealistic representation of things and that the reality is even worse. For reference, one character in this show spends pretty much the entire series not actually working in anime because getting a job she's after is like winning the lottery. The grunt work she does instead, according to a thing someone posted in the thread for the show, makes like twice what the girl who is actually drawing anime would get, meanwhile. It's really not a thing you do unless you want to do it, basically.

Isn't this pretty much how Japanese industry is in general, but without the "creating stuff" bit? I seem to remember 7 to 7 minimum plus mandatory after hours socialising to 11or later being the norm. Given that bullshit I can see the attraction of the manga setup to people there, even if the pay is worse than normal, at least you have the chance of some creative outlet.

I gather a lot of companies state that habitually staying after work isn't contractually required, but like a lot of other things in Japan it just happens because that's how it is.

You'd have to go to a message board for an accurate account from someone with the correct combination of drive, lack of imagination, free spiritedness, and laziness to work a classic big company office job but not participate in the culture of overwork (a Japanese goon basically :v:). I'd be interested to hear if this would actually damage their promotion prospects as everyone believes, or whether they'd be only be ostracised by their peers and end up getting kicked upstairs for some reason.
