Welcome to the Auspol thread for September. First things first: There will be no First Dog in this OP. You may cease holding your breath now. Last time on Auspol
Who is who in politics these days? The Australian Greens Placed first since almost everyone who regularly posts in this thread is a member. The Greens are a left wing party of hippies who have unreasonable and impractical policy ideas and an infantile fascination with fairness and decency. They stubbornly refuse to give up and accept that the only way to make real change in the world is to roll over and accept neoliberal rule. The Australian Labor Party The ineffective and incompetent right wing opposition party led by an empty suit. Subject to numerous attempts at "change from within" that would be laughable if they weren't so sad. As an ineffective alternative to the government it has meekly agreed with almost everything the government wants to do that involves the brutal treatment and dehumanisation of refugees. The Australian Liberal Party The Liberal Party stands for just about every wrong headed thing you can think of. As a result they are wildly popular among both the rich shithead and poor shithead demographics. Sadly these are large demographics in Australia. They have recently been reaching out to the Fascist demographic as well. Their only saving grace is that they are so incompetent that they can't do so much as sneeze without making GBS threads themselves publicly. IRC Information: There is an irc channel, #auspol on synirc where Australians discuss things, presumably dark spooky things that man was not meant to know. quote:We have a word filter for certain gendered insults and occasionally words that are overused for trolling. A synirc services bot will detect these words being used and kick you. We do not apologize for this and will not change it, so don't bother complaining. And just to clear this up, this is my (ewe2)'s policy and not some random event. If you don't like it, go away. The bot will also kick for repeating phrases and will ban you for flooding. Other thread resources: Who am I kidding. No one ever uses these links. Have another kitten picture: The media in Australia sucks rear end, so try these: Crikey ! Was not on the list because I'm sure everyone know's of it but duck monster pointed out that it was stupid not to included it so now it's here are you happy look now you've upset your brother! An Onymous Lefty: Left leaning, Victoria-centric blog by Jeremy Sear, Victorian barrister and Crikey contributor (the guy behind Pure Poison) Caen's Corner: "Some not-so-brief thoughts by a Melbourne lawyer with an interest in criminal law and associated fields". Much more law than politics, but often plainly written and relevant. Club Troppo: "Fearlessly dispensing political, legal and economic analysis (and some whimsy) since 2002". Left-leaning Aus politics blog. Usually exceptionally well written, and has multiple contributors. The Conscience Vote: Left-leaning political commentary that I almost always agree with and fervently wish would get published in the place of Michelle Grattan's bile. The Conversation: "The Conversation is an independent source of information, analysis and commentary from the university and research sector — written by acknowledged experts and delivered directly to the public. Our team of professional editors work with more than 2,800 academic authors to make this wealth of knowledge and expertise accessible to all." i.e. Actual information, before it gets hosed sideways by hack journalists. The Failed Estate: "Rejuvenating Journalism in a Jaded Age" Australian media is loving terrible, so here is some commentary on it. Those comments are Mr Denmore, who "was a journalist for 26 years. He has worked in radio, television, newspapers and online media. He now works in the corporate sector." Grog's Gamut: Aus politics commentary (with an economic bent) by Greg Jericho. Well written, well referenced. This guy was blogging during the 2010 federal election, pointing out how poo poo the media is, while being a public servant. He was outed by The Australian for calling them on their poo poo. Heathen Scripture: Exceptionally good satirical political commentary, which is unfortunately updated very rarely. John Quiggin: "Commentary on Australian & world events from a social-democratic perspective" by a Professor of Economics. Law Geek Down Under: Fairly straight-laced Australian legal news. New Matilda: Very professional and well written news/politics/current affairs site. One of the better independent sources of Australian news. News With Nipples: Somewhat casual/hobbyist Australian media/political blogging from a feminist perspective. The Political Sword: In-depth and substantive politics and policy analysis. Politically Homeless: Well written political commentary from Andrew Elder, former member of the Liberal Party, "starting off as a libertarian-punk, then as a moderate seeking to preserve rights and freedoms in a changing world; now he scorns the know-nothing Liberals, doesn't trust the left and disdains the other interest groups that flit around Australian politics". Something Wonky: Dave and Jeremy's new Australian political+media+culture blog/podcast. Replaces Pure Poison formerly of Crikey Pure Poison: Crikey's "look at the stupid poo poo the Australian media is doing" blog. Been replaced by Something Wonky above, but all of the blog is still viewable Quis Custodiet Ipsos Custodies: A fairly legalistic Australian law blog, with some interesting analysis from time to time. We Are All Dead: Matt Cowgill, who does economic analysis for the ACTU, posts political and economic stuff. Specialises in debunking trending Liberal talking points. Wixxyleaks: Wixxy, claims no interest nor relation to Julian Assange. Mostly politics and other good insights. Good investigative piece regarding the Slipper and Thomson affair. Left Flank: Commentary/analysis from a Marxist perspective. Overland literary journal: An literary journal. Jeff Sparrow is the editor. The Piping Shrike: Political blog. It's usually a good read. Independent Australia: IA is a progressive journal focusing on politics, democracy, the environment, Australian history and Australian identity. IA supports quality investigative journalism as well as citizen journalism and a diversity of voices. It believes Australians are short-changed by the mass media and and so it dedicates itself to seeking out the truth and informing the public. Reasonable Grounds: News in criminal justice, politics and human rights. Parliament events calendar: (Thanks eh4). You may now commence using this thread to store your shitposts:

Maybe say hello to them once in a while. Then maybe one day the people and the enemies of the people can be, like friends or something. Also kittens!

Labour has been so lovely the Liberals have been acting as govt and opposition. Also for some stupid reason, the Greens aren't acting like they could completely replace labour; if (Jeremy) Corbyn has a reasonable chance of bringing back old labour in England, why can't the Greens do the same here?

Kittens! Content! Bjørn Lomberg is a hack: Bjørn Lomborg, just a scientist with a different opinion? The whole article is a good read and features many charts showing the actual data. A tl;dr summary is that he hasn't published anything of note in the scientific literature, and the one paper he has that did manage to get cited is from 1996 (And a grand total of once). He also has a habit of cherry picking his figures to make his arguments and ignoring realities on the ground.

So it seems that 7 Eleven staff on student visas can not claim backpay for unpaid hours worked over their visa cap. So even if poo poo does rain down on them the guys doing all the work still get nothing.

xutech posted:Labour has been so lovely the Liberals have been acting as govt and opposition. As much as I like the greens, they can't really push into the current political situation like Corbyn. Both parties would go on the attack like it was an inner suberb election on crack, and they don't have much presence in a lot of places. If the greens gets to major party status, it'll be a slow process. Wrestlepig fucked around with this message at 23:26 on Aug 31, 2015 |

I have a supplemental question to Craig regarding my post which hasn't really garnered any response. Do you still characterise income equality as "the politics of envy" when there are people who are in as good a situation as you are (ie. myself) who are in favor of it? Do you think that namecalling people who advocate for this stuff because they happen to be less well off than you is a lovely thing to do?

Yes, far too much regulation. That's been the issue in the case of a company engaging in nation-wide wage theft. How's a business meant to get ahead without exploiting its most vulnerable employees anyway?
