Well Amazon had the great thought to launch the Fire TV 9 months after the Chromecast first came out. It's pretty much the definition of misjudging the market. As such, the Fire TV Stick comes out 6 months later and then they abandon the original Fire TV. With a dedicated app store, I bet Apple markets it as a low-cost gaming console/true entertainment solution. Maybe highlight the controller protocol they already have in place. Just link up your apple-approved bluetooth controller (or iOS Remote app) and play your favorite iOS racing/FPS game.

Sure, the Chromecast has sold 17 million over the last two years but one is/was $100 and the other was $35. The original AppleTV was the hobby that Steve Jobs trotted out and went no-where sales-wise.

They even invested pretty heavily in first-party game development, which Apple will never do. It's just kind of sad that 2015 will be the year of Apple launching a bunch of failed products. The new slightly improved iPhones will do well I guess. Edit: I feel like the "hobby" label is just an excuse for poor sales. It's a fully realized product, same as everything else they sell. They should have called the Apple Watch a hobby but they were overconfident and now it's probably too late to go back.

I also have both units: ATV3 in living room and FireTV for the bedroom tv. I really like the FTV, especially how the ffwd/rwnd works with the screen grabs. Obviously the interface isn't as clean and pretty as the ATV but it has all your "recent" apps right at the top so you can just click on NFLX, PLEX, Pandora, TuneIn right from there and be out of the FTV ugly main screen. I have Prime too so that obviously makes it more usable. I don't care at all about siri and/or voice recognition for the ATV, just better ffwd/rwnd and obviously more apps and it would be nice if the home sharing worked again so I can listen to my own music. The whole new iMusic thing is annoying. Keyser_Soze fucked around with this message at 17:37 on Aug 31, 2015 |

If you're going to play the unit sales game for companies that don't release unit sales numbers, all estimates put Roku a wide berth beyond Apple TV in units. I'm not claiming that the Apple TV is unprofitable for Apple, or that the next Apple TV won't sell incredibly well. I'm not claiming that Apple doesn't have the ability and know-how to sell an Apple TV at $200. But when we don't know what they're releasing or what kind of marketing push they're going to give it, it's absolutely fair to say things skeptical of a $200 Apple TV. Hell, if the rumor that the ATV3 is sticking around as a lower price point option, it's entirely possible that they're releasing the $200 Apple TV with the sole intent of making the current one look more attractive at whatever price point it's at. The 16GB iphones that are currently for sale (and many other things) show that Apple doesn't mind releasing something that is not suited to the average user that makes what is suited to them more attractive. Apple is currently having issues with Home Sharing. So they're still willing to sacrifice satisfaction in that regard to ameliorate other avenues for growth they see in the business. Home sharing is a significant (but not necessarily the lion's share) part of why people have bought Apple TVs in the past, so when a feature of them has not only been hindered in the past but is currently hindered right this minute, it's still possible that Apple doesn't see a ton of growth in TV yet. Hell, it's possible Apple is willing to have a new, feature-loaded Apple TV not directly turn a profit just to shut all of us up in requesting new ones. It's not likely, but it's possible. Really, my whole point is, if you're going to be playing the speculation game with Apple you probably don't want to be closing off possible outcomes. The post I was replying to was only doing that, and in a slightly elitist way. Bass Bottles posted:Edit: I feel like the "hobby" label is just an excuse for poor sales. I disagree with Bass here about the hobby level, because Apple has never once shown that the Apple TV takes precedence over any other product they sell. That doesn't mean that I think that Bass is wrong for thinking it, because it's just as possible with the facts laid on paper that Bass is correct. Whether or not it's a hobby is not a thing that can be classified as fact or not, so both opinions are valid, as is any speculation that is grounded even somewhat in reality.

At $150US it'll probably be a day one purchase for me. At $200 it may not be, but will likely be under my TV sooner rather than later once App store details are released. It'll all depend on what the Canadian prices are, though. at a $150 price point it'll probably be like $200CDN here anyway, and after taxes and things its basically going to be a $230 gadget. That's IF it starts at 150US. It'll be kind of a tough pill to swallow any higher. I only use my Roku for Plex so if they can get Plex on this bad boy then it'll be worth the money for me not to have two remote controls lying around.

Endless Mike posted:Well, the Apple TV doesn't poo poo ads all over the place, if nothing else. It also uses way less energy and is completely silent. The Xbox may also have issues with "black crush" where the color levels are permanently out-of-whack to artificially make the colors seem more rich. I know this affects games and the HDMI passthrough, but I'm not sure if apps like Netflix can choose to disable it. If you have trouble seeing detail in scenes with low-lighting, this is probably what's happening.

Does your XBone home screen not look like this with ads taking up a third of the screen? Because mine sure does. I do agree that I rarely hear the fans, but the fact is that it has them and they can be audible, unlike an Apple TV.

I recall stuff like Games with Gold and other gaming related stuff, but never noticed Deadmau5 on there. I guess I'm not that sensitive to that and think it's just recommendations based on stuff I like. If It were Clorox or BMW or something I'd probably be upset. There has to be a way to make things more content oriented than app oriented. This is the intent behind Apple Music, and despite its flaws, it does that well. The TV tosses some recommendations for you that could be in any number of locations like your iTunes share or in Netflix. Or, the TV sees you've been binge watching Breaking Bad so it has the next episode up on it's front page for you.

For me it would just be a good way to consolidate my Roku's functionality into my AppleTV. 90% of my media is live streamed through NFL/MLB/NHL/Youtube AppleTV apps and Netflix, then I have a tiny media library (read: like 5 or 6 tv shows I ripped from DVDs) that aren't available on Netflix and I watch on my Roku using Plex. I'm kind of a minimalist at heart so I hate doubling up on gadgets when one will do, so my plan in the long term is to ditch the Roku and PS4 and just live with my AppleTV. I think my whole "day one purchase" point was less that I'm excited to get it on day one (though I probably will, I'm an eager early adopter) but at a certain price point it gets harder to justify. Maybe I should have said that it'll be a day one purchase for me unless the price is prohibitive because I'm a gadget freak I'm actually not in the Apple ecosystem at ALL other than Apple Music. I listen to my music on my Sonos (Google Play subscription) not AppleTV. I haven't ever purchased a TV show or movie off the itunes store. To be honest I just prefer the AppleTV's UI and the fact that it goes to sleep and lets my TV auto-off after a certain amount of time, rather than the Roku which insists user are too stupid and would get confused by a timer sleep function. I prefer the look and functionality of the AppleTV vs the Roku (for example). Once Apple Music is integrated into the AppleTV I'll actually be happy since it'll be the only way to stream it to my Sonos until Sonos gets official Apple Music integration.

I love that Plex does a lot of that for local content, although it could use some work. If Apple can index the major streaming providers for search amongst all of them, it would be great. If 3rd party databases could tie into it (such as Plex) and make recommendations based on it, that'd be a pretty sweet step forward and definitely the kind of thing I'd spend money on. Edit: Marty I respect that. Thankfully Sonos is getting Apple Music in the next few months. Did you really get a PS4 for just media stuff or are the games so disappointing that you can ditch it once you get media stuff in one box? sellouts fucked around with this message at 18:17 on Sep 1, 2015 |

A results window comes up showing iTunes content on top (of course) followed by whatever Siri can find via APIs in the apps (Netflix, Hulu, everything else plugged into the ATV). I know more than half the time I go to watch something, I have to check some website to see if it is available via streaming first. It'd be nice to just use Siri to check right on the AppleTV.
