Sounds interesting but he's been stupidly evasive on details unless you want to cough up $$$.

Go read his blog, it's basically a Magic-like deckbuilder where you happen to have your own Kingdom pre-constructed. Which is kinda cool, imo. [edit] Also I like the block-based deck construction of Star Wars LCG, so it's extra 6% cool for me. Not $25 for alpha cool, though. [edit 2] As in, he explained the deck building mechanic three days ago. Lichtenstein fucked around with this message at 17:03 on Sep 1, 2015 |

If you found them similar, which one did you prefer, and why? They're very, very different games. Forbidden Stars is a straight up war game, whereas Chaos is a pure area control/semi-euro for all but one player (and that player isn't really playing a traditional wargame either). Both games are great, and both games are worth owning if their mechanics and theme appeal to you. Chaos is also worth owning just because it's one of the most asymmetrically designed board games available.

The End posted:Vastly different games. Chaos has multiple paths to victory and some very 'euro' sensibilities that make it a pretty snappy 90 minute game that generally feels very constrained in terms of the variety of strategies available to you (if you want to win), whereas Forbidden Stars is a big, 3-4 hour long, space war game where you have a very wide decision space and can very easily screw yourself over three turns away with bad strategic decisions made in the first or second turn. Both are great, FS is greaterer. Paradoxish posted:They're very, very different games. Both sound good, but considering I already own and love Twilight Imperium and Kemet, it sounds like I'd be better off picking up CitOW first, and Forbidden Stars.... oh who am I kidding, probably a week or two later. As far as collection-variety goes though, CitOW is sounding like it's the buy-me-first game.

I picked up the Argent: Mancers of the University expansion, and oh my god there’s just so much poo poo in this box, I can’t wait to play the game with all the expansion crap. I didn’t think the game needed more variety, and yet here I am super pumped about it.

The one thing I noticed, in general, is that research is MUCH MUCH easier to get and going for treasures/consumables is slightly more rewarding than without the expansion. Also the Technomancy Legendary spell is pretty drat useful.

Is Dropzone Commander (a UK miniatures game) at least playable without e.g. tearing one's hair out? I spotted a starter kit box at a local store abs it looks like it packs in quite a lot of stuff, including nice looking buildings. I kind of want to pick it up to see what exactly is inside and how they did it but I would rather do that with some vague assurance that the underlying game isn't junk though Also a goony looking dude showed up to our meetup with a pony shirt and Tanto Cuore under his arm

I DO recommend playing the recommended set up WITHOUT expansion to learn the game. Its not to hard to pick up, but it is hard to get used to all the stuff going on every turn without the game easing you in like that. Once you have done that, then you can use the expansion.

Orange Wizards and everything that goes with them, vault cards and supporters and spells and whatnot. The new bell tower cards are really great too, I don't play without them unless it's someone's very first game. The new rooms and things are nice but complex, you can leave those out for a while. orange wizards are the big draw, even if stuff like Synthesis is cool. The wizards really make spells ridiculously viable [even at round 1!] at the cost of money.

Kai Tave posted:What are the best bits of the expansion to start out using in your opinion? We have a few games under our belts already. Honestly they are all pretty drat equal in my opinion. If you know what you are doing then you can pretty much introduce it all at once. However, If I were to dribble things in I would probably introduce all the new items, spells, mages, vault cards (other than synthesis treasures) and the Technomancy consortium voter all at once. Then I would introduce the Archmages staff and the Archmages Staff Consortium voter. Then the new tiles (some of them like the Golem Factory are very powerful and unique) and the Synthesis Treasures. Lastly I would introduce the new Bell Tower Cards.

What I like doing for peoples first games, and I think it's in the rulebook as a variant maybe? Is instead of drafting, just give everyone one of the 5 coloured wizards each. That way everyone sees how they interact and things, I guess? It's good.
