Having the lead Bajoran character in DS9 be someone not associated with the Federation or Starfleet was a much better decision in the end anyways.

one of the cool things about ds9 was that terrorists were explicitly the good guys and the good guys were explicitly terrorists. Ro wasn't a terrorist though, she was just slightly less bland than the rest of tng

At this point it should be cheap enough to make franchised regional star treks like there are regional The Offices and regional singing idol shows. They could hot-bunk the sets with round the clock single-language teams of actors. It would be amazing if they had freedom to add local flavor in the script. German TNG where every plot revolves around Geordischmett extracting higher and higher levels of efficiency out of the warp core. A Turkish and Greek co-production of Deep Space Nine where the Cardassians and Bajorans are fixated on arguing over who invented which dish first. A Chinese TNG where every season's two part finale is always that year's set of Academy entrance exams and every mention of time travel & holodeck alternate history has been stripped out by government censors, the airtime to be replaced with earnest speeches by an admiral admonishing all students to go to bed now as the rest of the show is not worth watching. If I were a better person I'd make this happen and the world would be a better place for it.

My ideal Trek play-around thing right now would be on Netflix and structured like AHS with 12-episode-seasons with each season being a totally new setting and cast. Hell, they could run that and an Enterprise-G series in parallel.

id watch an enterprise g series in the alternative history started by the last star trek movies where vulcan and romulus are both blown up to hell and the implications of this idk who could be captain in a new tng style series though im not hip enough on modern actors there would definitely have to be a cardassian crewman tho i think theres a lot of traction there

Thinking about this further, Babylon 5 may have just been Albanian DS9 with the extensive chess references removed and replaced with expensive CGI fighter combat.

TNG? Klingon in Starfleet. DS9? Ferengi in Starfleet. Voyager? Maquis in Starfleet. (Enterprise doesn't count.) Clearly we're due for a Cardassian ensign. And once that new show introduces the dastardly Zimpoglians, three guesses what the next show will feature!

The starfleet entrance exam is supposed to be really hard, right? Even boy genius Wesley Crusher had trouble with it despite all his advantages. So how did refugee camp Ro and rape gang planet Yar pass the exam?

Starfleet academy is actually really easy so they could pump out as many redshirts as possible and Wesley was just dumb and everyone on the enterprise was just coddling him.

Even MIT has a gender studies program. Yar didn't spend a lot of time on theoretical warp field dynamics and Wesley Crusher didn't spent a lot of time on two-handed punches and narrow corridor fighting tactics.

That entrance exam never made a lot of sense, so maybe the writers just abandoned the concept entirely after that episode.

Better yet, if it's set in an alternative universe from the movies then the Cardassian is the in board security officer with the task of not only doing what Worf did but also rooting out spies and terrorists. His Cardassian attitudes means he takes a relaxed approach to invading people's privacy, but eventually the crew teach him that human governments abandoned that concept centuries before. Eventually he comes to respect that you can be the security chief without reading people's diaries, and accepts that Cardassians could learn a thing or two from the Federation. (This is basically Wolf's story arc by the way)

How about a series set in the Mirror Universe around the time of TNG with an evil Federation and the start of the rebellion movement. Where nearly all the humans are actually the bad guys. If it lasts long enough the Klingon-Cardassian alliance over throws the humans and then you realise they are even worse or just as bad. That's when they introduce the human resistance and at first you're like "gently caress Yeah! Human good guys!" but then it turns out they are literally terrorists and it leaves the audience conflicted.
