I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the more obnoxious colors are better because they subconsciously influence players to shoot at the goalie. Didn't Puma or something make shirts with subtle targets on them or something?

I've heard both, some do it to stand out, some wear green to blend in. The bright one is probably accurate because our eyes are attracted to light and the first things we usually notice are brighter objects.
