I'm guessing that Onyx is basically "EI Tier Zero Special Forces" made explicit-high-end EI vassal race units being grouped together with inherently elite EI troop types like the Sygmaa and Umbras, supported by expendable failbots in the form of the Batroids.

Whereas the EI sectorial, hypothetically, will be "You exist because we allow it, you will end because we demand it."

We just started a Spec Ops campaign at my club where we can spend OP as XP on our Spec Ops between games. I've decided to use the Morat one. What are good things to add to a Spec Ops? We can tailor lists for each game, so its not like I need him to plug holes in my list. I was thinking maybe engineer since I only have Dr Worm.

Engineer + Medic are pretty solid choices to throw onto a Spec Ops because they're like, 2 XP each, and +1 WIP is another 1 XP?

So for 5 XP, you get anywhere from a reasonably competent to a hyper-competent specialist.

The problem is that making a Specops a combat monster is hugely costly so most people just turn them into a hole-filling specialist.

Unless you're going to pay like, 5 XP for +3 ARM, 10 XP for +1 W, some more XP for +BTS and +BS, and then pay yet more for a weapon upgrade...

Pierzak

Hacking device, +WIP, +WIP, holoprojector1, doctor, in this order. Alternatively, switch the second WIP upgrade with doctor. One engie is plenty so wormbot is enough, but you need a spare doctor for MED/CUBEVACs.

Holo1 allows you to disguise as pretty any S2 unit, which is hilarious because no one expects it in CA the first time. What they don't expect the second time is that you can also disguise as the same Spec-Ops with a different layout :getin: (Mine? What mine? Do you see any minelayers here? :v:)

Don't spend more XP, get upgrades from the campaign table instead (Support L4 aka +1 STR is hilarious in a world where Batroids exist. Also, AVA2 Q).

Also, always take Treitak, Corax sucks donkey dick.

Can you go into some more detail on Aleph weaknesses? I have been playing Aleph casually, and aside from having obvious LTs and a lack of solid basic grunts, they don't seem to have any noticeable weaknesses.

I've mostly been using Devas, Myrmidons, Dasyu, Nagas and Netrods (of course) if that's useful.

Ive been playing against mainly Aleph and can comment a bit;

Lack of orders they can suffer if you take out their cheerleaders.
Its kind of easy to see if they have hidden units, due to their small unit count (if you bring 6 doods Im guessing you have some AD troopers)
Not a lot of redundancy on units, if I take out your sniper you might not have a backup.
High learning curve
Easy to fall into the "Characters" trap, where you take a bunch of characters but they aren't worth the cost.

Lacking basic grunts is kind of a big deal when it comes to order generation.

Flipswitch
Mar 30, 2010

Lack of basic chaps as said here, when you gun one or two troops ALEPH forces typically lack meaningful profiles left to get work done.
Lack of list redundancy thanks to expensive troops and specialists.
It is easy to figure out ALEPH lists when you know what the faction does.
Shorter range weapons on average.

ALEPH are pretty easy to do well with but the curve catches up at higher levels of play when the competition gets stiffer.

A lot of their advantages have hard counters. NWI is hard-countered by Shock ammo, while ODD is hard-countered by MSV. They don't really have basic cheerleader grunts-Dakinis are hugely expensive, chainrifle myrmidons are expensive and lack any long-ranged weapons (and are neutered by MSV2), Thorakitai are slow and you can only have 3 unless you're Phalanx.

ALEPH also doesn't tend to have great anti-armor weapons or heavy weapons-HMGs are hugely rare, your most likely source of AP damage will either be melee combat or MULTI Rifles, and you don't have many long range weapons. Steel Phalanx is even worse off on that front.

MJ12 fucked around with this message at 23:25 on Sep 11, 2015

ODD is also hard countered by flamethrowers too, they can dodge to try to avoid and not actually hurt you back, or just take the flamethrower to the face and if they do survive the ODD is gone. Granted a lot of things burn to death but it is nice vs ALEPH if you can pack cheap flamethrowers like Auxbots or Chasseurs vs the more expensive models.

It was 200. I had played against Ariadna last 2 games and tabled them with my Nisse Sniper alone. I had 7 fusileers, father knight, orc, and nisse IIRC. My fusileers felt entirely useless vs his guys. Even stacking AROs seemed to benefit him more than me. Think I should of just hid them instead and taken out his guys with my more elite units.

You're hitting that point every Infinity player reaches where they suddenly realize that line infantry AROs aren't going to accomplish anything against opposed rolls. Unless you're shooting someone who can't reply (like an Airborne Deployment unit arriving), expect to lose non-elites when they're exposed to enemy fire. You want to hide from cross-map enemy heavy weapons. Make your opponent spend orders moving before he can gun down your order pool, then counter-punch him during your own active turn.

Flipswitch
Mar 30, 2010

Corbs hit the nail on the head there, Fusiliers are nice and dandy but you generally don't want more than 2-3 per list as you'll want a nice variety of troop types to deal with things. If you're looking to deal with them ARO wise, consider something like a Nisse HMG/MSR* for active/reactive turns threats, or something like a Bulleteer to punch through aggressively. The Bulleteer like a lot of ALEPH troops tend to be difficult to hit with their ODD, but the Bulleteer Heavy Shotgun profiles are very reasonable in terms of points costs, with the hacking support program Assist Fire that grants Marksmanship Lv2, they can be absolutely brutal on the offensive. Auxilia are also a great ARO control threat as you can keep them back into total cover and help cage your opponents advance by keeping them in spots where enemies walk into HFT templates if they try to cover corners in tight area, or put themselves in a position for you to suicide charge the Auxbot into attack on your turn.

* - Depends on your use here, if you're looking for long ARO fire, the Nisse MSR is pretty good but the HMG can drown out long range threats with sheer weight of fire in the active turn. If you can deploy them on a first level building or walkway you can spend some actions standing up from prone and shooting people and re-enter prone by the end of your turn to stop him getting attacked back. Works well for the sniper too but burst is king in Infinity and the HMG has that in spades.

E: Consider the Sierra Dronbot as well for things like this, it can just drown out parts of the table with Total Reaction and make advancing a risky proposition. It's susceptible to smoke however where the Nisse isn't.

Yeah, it was one of the big things that started to creep into our meta so I started forcing more open tables so people started switching tracks to deal with the longer range weapons, TAGs and Total Reaction REMs that saw an increase in play. For example we're seeing a big surge in smoke and some nimbus ammo to cross larger corridors and a lot of people catching onto how strong cautious move can be when used with smoke or the narrow but long fire corridors and streets.

Mugaaz, what type of tables do you guys play on, do you tend to prefer more dense style urban combat or more open tables, or do you find you have a hefty mix?
