Okay kids, I have a website for you. I present to you, Goons Make Mario, a level sharing database for SA forum members. It's still got some rough edges, but everything (except password reset) should work. I'll touch it up tomorrow. No searching or categories yet, but you can rate levels and sort by either rating or upload date. Give it a test and don't be a jerk! Thanks! Enjoy!

Someone should program a level idea engine: a random generator thing where it gives you... a) a game style b) a level style c) an enemy to focus on d) some level element to focus on (eg: cannons, moving platforms, whatever) e) an optional gimmick from a list of many, like "really long jumps" or "scrolls really fast" or "no powerups", etc And maybe more enemies and elements? Like before you click "Generate me a level idea!", you first choose how many different enemies you want (1-5 or so), how many elements, etc. Then it generates an idea and you go build a level based on that. For added challenge: a generator that gives you 5-10 random parts and you can ONLY use those to build a whole level.

You can use Miiverse to leave messages in your levels in a roundabout way, but I'd rather they make it official and add the Hint Block from Super Mario World.

Yes I want that. I want all of that. I'm not getting Mario Maker this month, but part of the reason I'm short on budget is because I'm going to Italy for vacations, and I think that I'm honoring Mario that way, too.

So I got my copy two days early and put in about 8 hours yesterday, some thoughts/impressions: - Surprised and pleased to see the unlocks aren't quite daily. Every hour or so of play in Create mode got me more stuff. It seems like the daily unlocks are for people playing the game in shorter bursts. After my 8-hour session I had all four tilesets and six rows of tools with more to come, it seems. - Please trust me when I say that the starting toolset is enough to make more than enough good levels. I was initially dissatisfied then did a 10-Mario Challenge and was summarily proved wrong. It's a great way to teach you how to use the creator tools and UI without rushing you into Chain-Chomp cannons and Para-Bowsers. - The UI is a little fiddly when it comes to 'painting' regions, but holding the stylus to the screen then using the joystick to 'drag' the brush along a straight line works wonders. Also the game is reticent to tell you that L/R is a group-select and ZR/ZL are copy/paste. ZR+R or ZL+L is the eraser. - The means of discovering content kinda suck - if you wanna see what your friends have made, they need to share a level with you via a 16-digit code first so that you can find their user account and 'follow' them. Doesn't seem to be a way in the UI to just see your friends and their levels. (edit: someone has pointed out to me that you can use Miiverse to see everything your friends are uploading) - The majority of the levels right now are pretty much your run-of-the-mill 'do six pitch-perfect jumps on Parakoopas! lol u died!!!' hellscapes (seems to be a favourite of Japanese players in particular). When you're playing, please gold-star the gently caress out of people who understand difficulty curves and designing things with more than one method of completion. - The amiibo costumes are so much more Effort than I expected from Nintendo. I got a little weepy-eyed at Peach having her Super Mario USA sound effects. - You can't set a ? block to give a fire flower if you're already Super Mario, which is weird. - There are a lot of dope auto-playing levels already. - Time passes so loving quickly when you're designing, and I thought The Phantom Pain was bad. - I'm sick of Mario music already Best levels I played so far: - Koopa Troopa shell escort mission. - A mushroom pops in the roof above you and you have to use bricks to bounce it over obstacles to the end. - Countless 'dont touch the mushroom' levels. - A hot take on Tiny-Huge Island from SM64 - Someone used the Pokemon amiibos to retell Pokemon Yellow with stuff like a Lavender Town ghost house and Team Rocket conveyor belt puzzles. - An F-Zero racecourse using the super-fast blue skull moving platform and the Captain Falcon amiibo. - A somewhat standard level that had a spring auto-player after Mario jumps off the flagpole and tries to walk into the castle! Yeah, Shopto.net used to be the king of this (a few times I got a Friday game on a Tuesday), but they seem to have reined it in as they've gotten bigger. The Game Collection are killing it at the moment - got TPP on the Friday before release and Mario Maker yesterday.

There was a rumor that since reviews copies of the game counted as a separate game in Miiverse, that meant all the levels were stored on a separate server and are unavailable to players of the actual release. Did that turn out to be true?

I might buy a Wii U just for this single game. My sister linked me to a video and holy poo poo, this looks fantastic. I have a few questions I cannot seem to find online though! 1: it seems like you can switch through all the Mario games easily. Meaning that if I create a stage it doesn't have to be in Super Mario 1, 3, World, NSMB because I can just create it in any of them and switch between them. Is this correct? If so, what happens with something like Yoshi? Does he actually show up in Super Mario Bros. 1? 2: The Amiibo apparently unlocks 8-bit costumes for the character you are scanning. Does this game require it be scanned every single time to get the costume? I'd love to just borrow my friend's Sonic amiibo to unlock Sonic in the game, but not if it's going to screw her out of unlocking Sonic for her game as well. Thanks. I am on the verge of clicking "buy" at Nintendo's website for a refurbished unit just for this game, but I just wanted to know about these two things.

For example, you can wall-jump in NSMB mode but not in the others. So if you make a level in NSMB that relies on walljumping to solve it, then change the style at the last moment, your level will be broken. Some items are the same across all four styles, whereas some change. If you place a Yoshi, he'll turn into a Goomba Shoe in SMB1 and SMB3 modes. The Mystery Mushroom in SMB1 becomes the Feather(Leaf?), Cape, or Propellor Cap respectively in the other styles. Enemies might be different between styles too. Bowser has completely different attacks depending on what game style your level is. Not sure about the Amiibo stuff. Hedrigall fucked around with this message at 13:40 on Sep 10, 2015 |

You can freely switch between each game theme but there are items that are specific to certain themes - Kuribo's Shoe is a SMB/SMB3-exclusive item whereas Yoshi is a SMW/NSMB-exclusive item, for instance. I don't know what happens if you try to switch themes with one of those items present but I think it just substitutes that item for whatever other item shares the same spot on the drop-down menu. Amiibos let you quick-unlock particular character skins but you can unlock every skin without owning/tapping any Amiibo and there are quite a few skins that need to be unlocked that way. You can tap the Amiibo on as many systems as you want and you can play downloaded levels that feature skins you haven't unlocked without any issues.

Amiibo costumes in the SMB tileset become a game-specific power-up like the Leaf in SMB3 or the Propeller Hat in NSMBU.Hedrigall posted:Enemies might be different between styles too. Bowser has completely different attacks depending on what game style your level is.

Even enemies that weren't in other games have new sprites to fit in. 2: If you scan an amiibo it unlocks that costume permanently, so pass it around as much as you want. You can actually unlock all the costumes without any amiibos, and the amiibos just unlock them right away.

I've read several references to a phone number you can call to get a physical copy of the art book, if you buy the game digitally. Is that supposed to last for a while or is it only for digital pre-load/pre-orders? If it's the latter I guess I'm buying this ahead of my original schedule.
