I should give them a shot again - the one time my wife and I tried them it was nothing special at all. Steaks were pretty bland and overall the meal was just meh compared to what I've gotten at other steakhouses.

Going to DC in October. Used to live there, but it seems like the restaurant scene has changed dramatically in 4 years. Looking for recommendations for a few nights out. First, looking for a place to go with my family - 5 people — on a Friday night. All pretty adventurous eaters, but some don't eat pork. I am leaving towards kapnos, but didn't know of this would be a good choice? Also, looking for a potentially nice meal to take my wife. Tasting menus are great. We went to komi in 2010, and it was her favorite meal ever, but unfortunately it's closed while we are back. By the above it would appear we really want Greek and medditeranean flavors, but that was just coincidence.

Kapnos is great. The Kapnos location in DC has a more land-biased menu (steak, lamb, chicken, pork), Kapnos in Ballston is more seafood oriented.

HAh thanks for the invite, but I gots no sitter tomorrow night. Went to Founding Farmers Tyson's tonight. Pretty damned good. Esspensive but excellent steaks. Perfect cook on everything. Breads and spreads very good. Oysters very good but too much green apple in the mignonette. It's not bad it's just weird. Tuxedo cake very decadent.

Rogue was on par! Pretty good for the price. A few courses that had us going woww, which is what it's all about. Most were just good, but I think we both had just 1 or 2 out of 24 which we just plain didn't like, so that's a pretty great record. With pairings, tax and tip, it was about 380 total. For under 200pp, really can't complain. If it was closer to 450-500, I might have had some grumbles with food and service, so they've priced themselves well. Also we saw all our favorite dishes also go to tables doing the less expensive fixed course option, so I'm guessing that's the inside track. Thanks for the suggestions. Prolly check out Indian place tomorrow

Can anyone give me the rundown of places around DC that compare to Richmond dining? Quirky, trendy, hipstery, focused, refined and specialists are words I'd use to describe most of my favorite RVA establishments. Richmond has too much food for one post, but here's a quick list of some of the things I'm looking to replace. There's now a Sugar Shack donuts in Alexandria, so thank God for that. Has anyone tried Duck Donuts? I've been to Astro Donuts in Falls Church on opening day, and it was good-ish. The chicken was dry, but the seasoning was good. The donuts were very good, but not good enough to make me a regular. Taco Bamba in Falls Church is amazing and probably the only thing I've found that feels like it belongs in RVA (comparable to Don't Look Back or Boka Tako) RVA has Proper Pie Company. Boyers Ice Cream and Coffee which serves Shyindigs sweets and Gelati Celesti ice cream There's WPA Bakery. And of course, the legendary Millie's Diner They have amazing Bloody Marys and literally everything on their brunch menu is amazing. It's one of the few places I've found to have legitimate Smithfield Country ham on their eggs Benedict. Yes, I grew up on 29 Diner and Amphora, I'm looking for something just a touch more refined. Please help me, my soul is hurting and I need something more than lovely kebabs, falafel, or korean BBQ to fill the void. Edit: I've had Busboys and Poets brunch plenty of times. I enjoy it and it's probably the most comparable thing to Millie's I've found up here. GnarlyCharlie4u fucked around with this message at 15:30 on Sep 10, 2015 |

If you are in the mood for a beer and a hot dog and tater tots or grilled cheese or something like that, you might like Galaxy Hut in Clarendon, though I haven't been there in a few years. I would describe it as a bar rather than a restaurant though. Iota, across the street, has pretty good sandwiches and live music.

There's a chef there who's been making Peking Duck for like 40 years or something. He carves it tableside, and if you ask, they'll box up the bones when he's done so you can make duck stock at home. I have some out of town friends who demand we take them there when they visit. Their whole "secret" Chinese menu is good, but the peking duck is really the specialty.

Went to Balaji Cafe in Herndon on Thursday with a vegan friend, I was pretty satisfied with the food (which is all vegetarian; I'm definitely not a vegetarian). It's tucked away in a lovely off the road office park, so if it lasts it's gotta be good. Got dessert at a little gelato/crepe place just across from it and it was pretty good too. The guy behind the counter (presumably the owner?) was very enthusiastic about trying different combinations of gelato, which were mostly good. They also have a variety of macaron.

So I moved a few months back from Central NJ to what constitutes the western apogee of what constitutes the DC metro area. While I'm glad that rent is cheaper, the area lacks the myriad options once available to me in Jersey. Does anyone know of anywhere in the DC area, especially to the west, where I could find rodizio? Also, Dominican food. I managed to find some decent Cuban food in Frederick, but I miss being able to walk out of a bodega with $20 worth of fried meat and plantains. But I don't know of anywhere to find rodizio. Also, I'm super lazy. Are there any good suggestions for sushi really far west, like Hagerstown or Winchester areas?

Went to Isabella's italianish small plates joint in Chinatown, Grafiatto. Was ok I guess. Breadbasket was some kind of sweet bread with nuts sliced thin and toasted crisp. Good but not really what I wanted. charcuterie plate - just ok, good meats and cheeses but a small pot of honey was the only accompaniment? Chicken thigh with pepperoni sauce - excellent. Wish I had some bread to soak up that sauce. smashed fingerling potatoes - excellent Pizza w/meatball. Meatball tasty. Sauce mom-ish, fresh and good but more like a sunday gravy than pizza sauce. Crust ok but not impressive at all, not crisp enough. Supposedly the pasta is good there. Wife was not in the mood for pasta. Also we stopped at Jaleo for a drink on the way and got the garlic shrimp. A mere shadow of what it was when Jose was in the kitchen. So disappointing. 2DCAT posted:Seems like they rotate a lot. I went to Baby Wale last night and had the steak - it was really really good. It's apparently the same steak served at Courdoroy, of which Baby Wale is the less-fancy sister restaurant of. Super flavorful. The spring rolls were OK - the main draw behind them is that they were huge (like, 8 inches long each) and had a really good sauce, but I wouldn't say they were anything super crazy to go out of your way for. Also they made a drat good sazerac.

This might be a bit of a stretch, but since this is the closest I'll find to a NoVA thread, I'm going to go out on a limb... I'm way out in the Manassas area, and looking for something in Prince William or the western half of Fairfax county. My wife and I are relatively adventurous eaters, so nothing's really off limits. Doesn't need to be fancy; I'm just looking for stuff to try that's not a chain.
