What everybody else said, but also going to recommend you glance at a guide for skill learn levels and probably the skills themselves since you're likely completely unfamiliar with their weird-rear end names (which become non-weird the longer you play SMT stuff). I think the first time I played Nocturne I printed out a sheet and kept it by the TV and it really helped but nowadays I guess smart phones exist! Buffs/Debuffs are good and I want to say physical was better than magic on MC, but either can work as long as you focus on one from the beginning.

Physical -> Magic -> Physical again for the MC works pretty well. You start off punching demons to death, get some elemental skills to round up your arsenal and abuse the press turn system, then go back to punching poo poo to death once you get the high tier physical skills. Just leave your Phys at around 20-30 and do the rest with incenses until then.

Thinking about it I may have over remembered slightly. Still though, there's the armor knights, Sophia, wolt, yuno and some oddities with characters that are almost strictly worse versions than others, like fir to rutger.
