It's a shame the Guardian is hideously sexist and hasn't commented at all on the new First Secretary of State's appearance in the House of Commons or the Trade Union Bill. But somewhere, there's a rumour that Corbyn once said no comment to a journalist.

I doubt he'd have insisted, it's absolutely that Corbyn wants someone he trusts & agrees with to be in charge of the hypothetical shadow budget.

Like I said earlier, it's Corbyn flexing and showing he can play hardball where it matters the most.

Um there's a picture of her on the front bench in this article???

http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2015/sep/14/labour-shadow-cabinet-angela-eagle-extra-title-women-row

Of course it doesn't actually talk about her performance, just that she got a title as a token gesture and has quotes like

quote:

Like many other people I have always done whatever I could to make sure there were visible women at the top of the party and now they are not there. Visually, it is bad.

Alan "I cannot have public confusion between scientific advice and government policy" Johnson is not good and struck a massive and public blow against science, especially with regards to independent advisors and evidence-based policy. He made it abundantly clear that if you advise the government on scientific matters then you'd better only present evidence that agrees with them or you'll be fired and the actual outcomes of any research are completely irrelevant.

Yeah, Alan Johnson sacking David Nutt was a really lovely move for evidence based policy.

He's giving Boris a hard time today though, so stopped clocks etc etc.

The spiky one.
Just got an email about opposing the trade union bill, signed the petition and signed up for the Labour monthly membership. Only downside is my local Labour MP, Jeff Smith has the most generic name and he kinda looks a bit like Trigger from Only Fools and Horses. I can't stand that show after being forced to watch endless reruns of it over the years.

Out of interest, why does this thread have such a thing for Stella Creasy? Looking at her bio, it seems like a classic case of privileged background -> Lobbyist / PR Consultant -> political speechwriter -> councillor -> mayor -> Young Fabians -> MP. No "proper job" outside politics - she looks just as much of a careerist as the other leadership candidates were. She was actually employed as a lobbyist too - I would have thought she would be up against the wall for that alone.

Background isn't everything. After all, Tony Benn. If you look through my posts in the August thread I'm sure I did a Why Stella Is A Bae effort post. But she is a great campaigner on righteous issues, works really hard in her constituency and is an actual real person not a Westminster robot.

He seems to have opted for McDonnell as shadow chancellor rather than promoting junior backers to cabinet positions, there's only really three shadow ministers (McDonnell, Abbott and Trickett) who are strong Corbyn allies - and Trickett is hardly a controversial choice.

For comparison Burnham supporters have done pretty well for themselves, including the man himself 12 of his supporters got cabinet spots

I feel like if Eagle got chancellor he could have probably squeezed in more personal appointees but ho hum

She was actually employed as a lobbyist too - I would have thought she would be up against the wall for that alone.

This was covered a little bit in last month's thread when people were talking about the deputy candidates, but the main things were that she seems a strong campaigning MP (doing impressive work about getting parliament to discuss payday loans), is a good constituency MP with solid grassroots support and connections and is the sort of young, articulate and likeable female MP that Labour need to develop. There's also the way that a young female face would help to balance the bearded old lefty aspect of a Corbyn-led Labour. That she's also attractive doesn't hurt- for all their terribleness Tristram Hunt and Chuka Umunna* do look good on telly.

On the downside, I think she's generally placed as a centrist in the party (possibly even on the right, although I'm not sure on the specifics of this in terms of voting/activities she's been involved in, but someone else here might be able to clarify), and while she didn't nominate anyone for leader there was a rumour floating about that she along with a group of others had "identified" Liz Kendall as a future leader, which doesn't say much about her judgement.

* It's probably not news to a lot of folk here, but I only recently found out that the leadership run that wasn't was derailed by photos of Umunna "taking drugs and having sex with men" (this according to a close friend's brother-in-law, who's involved in editorial at the Guardian). I know drugs/(gay) sex/tabloid photos (in any and all combinations) were all mentioned right after he pulled of the race, but it was interesting to get it semi-confirmed.

She's now my local MP (recently moved from Highgate to Walthamstow) but I've known of her for a few years and she is really involved in local issues, and regularly interacts with her constituents both IRL and frequently online, and did what she could to get a purged housemate of mine back on the list, albeit without success. Very active highlighting dodgy estate agents in the area, too. Seems like a nice woman.
